HC allows SAD to withdraw petition on election symbol
The Delhi High Court has allowed Shiromani Akali Dal to withdraw its petition relating to allotment of election symbol `bucket` and make a fresh representation before the Election Commission of India.
New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has allowed Shiromani Akali Dal to withdraw its petition relating to allotment of election symbol `bucket` and make a fresh representation before the Election Commission of India.
A bench of Justice Sudershan Misra allowed SAD and its Delhi unit president Manjit Singh G K to withdraw the petition challenging the allotment of election symbol `bucket` to Progressive Party and "to make a representation before ECI in respect of all their grievances".
SAD had in the petition said it had contested the recent Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee election on the symbol `bucket` and ECI`s October 18 Notification-cum-Symbol Order granting the sybmol to some other party is going to create a great confusion in the minds of Sikh voters.
SAD`s counsel Abinash Mishra said he would withdraw the petition and make a fresh representation before ECI with all the legal issues including the manner in which common symbols are introduced for states and union territories and invitation of comments from registered political parties before introducing any fresh election symbol.
It had said it is "going to contest Delhi assembly elections in alliance with Bhartiya Janata Party and the Notification-cum-Symbol Order dated October 18 is going to seriously prejudice the results of the Delhi assembly elections because the election symbol of bucket, granted to Respondent No. 2 (Progressive Party) for Delhi assembly elections, is going to create great confusion in the minds of the Sikh voters who have recently voted for SAD on the same election symbol during the recently-concluded elections held for the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee".
It had in its petition sought freezing of the symbol bucket and a direction to ECI to allot some other sybmol to the Progressive Party out of the other nine symbols for the scheduled Delhi Assembly elections.
