Bhubaneswar: Depression induced torrential rain for three days caused flood in major rivers like Subarnarekha, Budhabalanga and Baitarani in northen Odisha affecting over one lakh people, leaving one person dead and another missing so far.
While flood water has receded in Budhabalanga river in Balasore district, Subarnarekha river is still flowing above danger mark in Balasore district, official sources said.
Water level of Baitarani has receded below danger level at Anandapur and at Akhuapada.
Balasore district was badly hit with flood in 224 villages of 41 gram panchayats spread over four blocks (Basta, Jaleswar, Baliapal and Balasore Sadar), while 90 villages in 27 Gram Panchayats under 5 Blocks (Badasahi, Rasgobindpur, Morada and Betanati) and 6 wards of Baripada Municipality of Mayurbhanj district have been affected by the flood.
More than one lakh people have been affected in Balasore district, a spokesman at the Special Relief Commissioner`s office said here.
One person in Badasahi Block of Mayurbhanj district died yesterday while another person of Morada Block in the same district was missing due to flood, they said.
"The Collectors of the concerned districts have been advised to remain watchful to the situation and take required rescue and relief measures as may be necessary," said Revenue and Disaster Management minister S N Patro.
ODRAF (Odisha disaster rapid action force) units have been deployed in Balasore and Mayurbhanj district, they said.
Following incessant rains due to depression for the last three days, major rivers in Jajpur district are also in spate affecting more than 5,000 people.
