In recent years, Liberal Arts has been widely accepted around the world as a school of thought to reckon with. Leaders such as Barak Obama, Meryl Streep, Hillary Clinton have all studied at liberal arts colleges and it is now being seen as a major contributor globally for shaping leaders of tomorrow.
Noting this fact,Symbiosis has pioneered Liberal Arts education in India in recent years. With an objective to ensure that the youth of India "think write speak logically and coherently" ,the typical takeaways of a liberal arts education, it established the Symbiosis School for Liberal Arts that has committed to the cause whole heartedly and offers a 4 year bachelor degree program with specialisations in Business , Media, English, Economics, Political Science, Sociology, Psychology, Biology, Maths & Statistics, Computer Science.
At the Symbiosis School for Liberal Arts, program curricula is composed in an extremely lucid manner to combine interdisciplinary streams that are not available in main style conventional education programs.
SSLA attempts to bring the diversity of real life into dynamically constructed classrooms. This liberal arts curriculum may be described as a comprehensive study of three main branches of knowledge; the humanities (e.g., literature, language, philosophy, the fine arts, and history), the physical and biological sciences and mathematics, and the social sciences (e.g., psychology, sociology, anthropology). A student is offered these 3 branches of knowledge through his/her course of study, as well as, an in-depth study in a specific area of interest that will become the area of specialization This is made easy by the SSLA approach that they highlight on their website as ‘Understanding + Continuously updated course structure + No mugging’. What is great to note is the fact that you can combine rare subjects of interest that no other program allows you to. The course is coupled with 18 core courses and 8 general courses(electives) that have one minor specialization subject and one major specialization subject. Some of the minor specializations are International relations, Law, Film Studies, Gender Studies, Anthropology etc. To learn more on the specializations you can visit http://www.ssla.edu.in/academics/course-structure
on their website.
Following this structure, students are exposed to a philosophy of education that empowers them with a strong foundation of knowledge, with transferable intellectual and practical skills such as communication, analytical and problem-solving skills. Thus, students are able to demonstrate an ability to apply knowledge and skills in real-world settings, with a stronger sense of values, ethics, and civic engagement.
Globally, the power of liberal education has been recognized since students opt for these courses and tend to do exceedingly well. This is something that SSLA too has seen over the years. More over, at SSLA students are assisted to inculcate values and ideas that will assist their futures as productive and effective citizens who make a positive difference in the lives of their families, communities, organizations and countries.
