IPL stars are ICC T-20 duds?

Outstanding performance in IPL does not guarantee a matching performance in international cricket.

A Zee Research Group (ZRG) analysis reveals that performance of top run-getters and wicket-takers of ‘IPL season 5’ was pretty dismal in international cricket played post the ‘desi’ T-20 tournament.

For instance, Chris Gayle who scored a whopping 733 runs in 15 IPL innings last season only collected 376 runs in 12 innings of international T-20 cricket. Moreover, Gautam Gambhir, who was the second highest run getter in IPL 5, just gathered 186 runs in 11 international T-20 innings. Interestingly, Shikhar Dhawan who scored 21 runs less than Gambhir in previous IPL, is yet to play T-20 cricket for the country.

Performances of IPL stars, Ajinkya Rahane, Virender Sehwag and Cameron White was also not up to the mark in international T-20 cricket played between IPL 5 and 6. Whilst Rahane scored only 118 runs in five innings he played, Sehwag collected 54 runs in three matches played during the period.

Similarly Australian T-20 specialist White scored 479 runs for Deccan Chargers in IPL’s last season but collected only 80 runs in nine matches played for his national team. Similarly, performances of Suresh Raina and Rohit Sharma in international T-20 cricket have been less impressive in comparison to their IPL performances.

Like batsmen top bowlers of IPL too have disappointed the fans in their international T-20 outings. South African premier fast bowler Morne Morkel who was highest wicket taker in the previous season of the IPL scalped only seven wickets in nine international T-20 matches played during the period. Similarly, Sunil Narine and Lasith Malinga who got 24 and 22 wickets respectively in the IPL 5 couldn’t continue their good performance in international cricket.

While Narine got 20 wickets, Malinga took 11 wickets in 14 and 11 international T-20 matches played respectively during the period. Umesh Yadav and Vinay Kumar who ended with 19 wickets in IPL 5 did not get enough T-20 games for the national side. While Yadav got one wicket in the single T-20 game he played, Kumar wasn’t picked for any international game during the period.

The mismatch between IPL performance and international cricket extends to other formats as well. IPL stars generally peter out in ODIs as also Tests.

The analysis shows another perspective: some big ticket T-20 international players have failed to impress so far this season. New Zealand batsmen Brendum Mccullum and Martin Guptill currently hold first and second batsmen rank respectively but this IPL Mccullum has not been consistent for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), while Guptill did not have any buyers this season.
