India & the legacy of Bahadur Shah

The Compulsive Pilgrim
a
History repeats itself, they say and watching the incidents of past couple of weeks I can only say that whosever said it, was definitely a man of tremendous foresight.

Karkare, Unnikrishnan, and all those who laid down their lives in Mumbai on November 26 carried the spirit of Indians, who think and dream of a united India, in their brave hearts. An India which is secure at all costs, an India where one can hold his head high. A nation that Rabindranath Tagore and Mahatma Gandhi once dreamt of.

It was a legacy which these martyrs inherited from the past. History has stood testimony to the fact that our country had no dearth of gallant heroes. Be it Chandrasekhar Azad, Khudiram Bose, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose or for that matter squadron leader Ajay Ahuja who died fighting in Kargil. The names of the martyrs scripted on India Gate in New Delhi are none the lesser.

It is the spirit of India that has stood ground against some barbaric aggressions in world history, starting from Taimur and Chengez Khan. It has also seen aggressors-turned-rulers who finally became Indians. It has seen the greatest Muslim ruler of modern times, Akbar-the great, who propagated a symbiosis of two cultures and went on to launch and propagate the Din - i- Ilahi. World history had never seen more secular ruler than Akbar before.

But, there’s more to history.

Since time immemorial, rulers of this land of unlimited resources and boundless opportunities let it down repeatedly. It was in Bahadur Shah Zafar’s inefficiency that East India Company saw its opportunity. The internal feud among India’s princely states and sheer lack of foresight and wisdom in Zafar saw British Major Hodson capturing Delhi and with it, India’s pride.

Zafar undoubtedly was a fantastic poet and a man who loved nature and beauty and peace. Let me just quote one of his famous poems written in Urdu ‘Lagta Nahi Hai Jee Mera’:

“My heart is not happy in this despoiled land
Who has ever felt fulfilled in this transient world
The nightingale laments neither to the gardener nor to the hunter
Imprisonment was written in fate in the season of spring
Tell these emotions to go dwell elsewhere
Where is there space for them in this besmirched (bloodied) heart? I had requested for a
long life a life of four days
Two passed by in pining, and two in waiting.
The days of life are over, its evening of death
Now I can sleep without any stress forever in my tomb
How unlucky is Zafar!

A brilliant poet but, as it was proved, good poets are not often good leaders.

Come November 30, 2008 and history repeated itself. Another man was relieved of his responsibilities. Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil was addressing the press conference in which he announced, “I accept the moral responsibility of Mumbai attacks and resign from my post. I feel a lot relieved now.”

Patil in many a-sense carried the legacy of Bahadur Shah Zafar. For his sheer incompetence in failing to take action as a series of terror attacks bruised India in different cities and under different names- he paid the price, arguably too late. Or else how will you explain the fact that the file of Mohan Chandra Sharma – who died while fighting terrorists- was gathering dust in Home Ministry.

There have been stark revelations that intelligence agencies had forewarned of such attacks on numerous occasions but there was no urgency to act. Singling out just Shivraj would be like treating some one for fever when the patient has Cancer.

There are many who took to streets against such attacks in Mumbai and all across the nation. But let’s not get bogged down by the leadership, or the lack of it. History suggests whenever it is felt that there is no way out of gloom, there comes a man who shows the way- which Guru Gobind Singh and Mahatma Gandhi showed.

The BIG question is- Are we ready to find the Mahatma within?

Thanks for the excellent article, its indeed a big question and equally very difficult to be answered. Don`t u think we should also be ready to find leaders like Subhash Chandra Bosh and Lal Bahadur Shastri within. Surprised to see Patil, not a poet, even on the path of Shah Jafar. Undoubtedly, one of the best articles i have gone through so far. BEST OF LUCK

there was a very famous sher of Bahadur Shah Zafar ``kitna hae badnaseeb Zafar qabr k liye, do gaz zameen bhi na mili kooe yaar me.`` (He was imprisoned and killed in some foreign land). Equating Shivraj Patil with Zafar is not right, may be as far as sherwani and dresses are concerned Shivraj carried the legacy of the Mughal ruler. Anyway the big question is are we ready to find Mahatma within? India is a great country and no doubt the coming generation will be able to treat this cancer of terrorism. till now we are ruled by those who have either seen division or have suffered its consequences and because of these people have kind of hatred for different sects.Time is changing and Inshallah policies will change.

Raja, the great army of pakistan doesn`t have the guts to fight directly with Indian Army and hence it is indulging in indirect proxy war. The world knows what happened it 1971...Before talking about Gujrat...remeber it started with burning of Hindu pilgrims in Godhra, The disputed site of Babri was a place where no namaz had been performed for more than 100 years. so it was not a mosque..Remember Pakistan is crumbling under its own weight of Islamic Terrosim

Dear Shekhar, you have raised a valid point. This country produce more Jaichands and Meer Jafars than Bhagat Singh and Azads.Majority of us are sychophants and shed crocodile tears. Whatever we all do, with an eye on self glory and publicity. Today everybody who matters is praising role of NSG Commados and Army but who had taken note of long pending demand of Armed Forces for ONE RANK ONE PENSION. Congress and BJP both promised in their manifestos to implement this but I am pained to write that Govt has outrightly rejected this demand. If govt is so insensitive to this JUST demand, then better , all politicians should desist from sheding GHHDIYALI AANSOO and leave them to die in peace. In this role media is also no exception. Nobody is questioning govt about non implementation of long pending demand of Armed Forces which is linked with IZZAT-O-IQBAL.

To continue to walk safe carrying forward the spirit of India, your last sentence has wonderfully put the entire responsibility on each one of us. Excellent post, and I loved the apt references to the various Mughals.

Well written & nice translation of BSZ`s ghazal. However, the comparison of Patil with BSZ is not fair (to either). BSZ had emperor-hood ``thrust upon him`` (esp. when you consider the sepoys of Indian mutiny declared him so).Not so for Patil who was a minister by choice.

brilliant article- sitting here in the uk and watching the 26/11 events was a heart breaking experience, however, i feel that as always with these events the real lessons are never learnt and reality is ignored offensive remedial action is considered but the ground reality of the real causes of these events are seldom discussedIndia prides itself on its secular values but how true is that??The brutal killings of thousands of muslims in gujratand the bombay riots- why were the perprtrators never brought to justice the whole country stood by and watched the hindu extremists distroy the babri masjid while the army and the police assisted the exremists in doing so, why were those never brought to justice when the country and its rulers are prepared to put up with such atrocitys aimed atthe muslims they should also embrace any remedial action be it frm LeT of JeM or the indiam mujahedeenThe truth of the matter is that india is a deeply rooted racist country whith a superiority bully boy complex its laughable when they immediately rsort to balming and threatning pakistan with consequences india may be a bigger country but its not exactly the isreal-palestine scenario here Pakistan is a proud newclear power with one of the best armies in the world and millions of mujahedeens who will give up their lives for their beloved country!! I strongly feel that india needs to go back to the drawing bord and re-assess the bigger picture if it realy wants to prevent such attacks in the future!!!
