In the land of Nitish

The Compulsive Pilgrim

Nothing the greatest can conceive

Within itself: and only its design
The hand that follows intellect can achieve.

Ferrying milk from neighbouring villages of Matihani, Badalpura, is a routine that Doodhwala Hare Ram hardly ever misses. It’s an occupation which he inherited from his forefathers. But on Feb 10, 2009, Hare Ram had a sense of excitement about his routine job. He took extra care and caution in delivering over fifty litres of milk for those ‘neta ji log’ who were assembling in his village.

The gathering in Barbighi was tremendous. The village had never seen such an array of bureaucrats and leaders; apart from occasional trips of ‘chutbhaiya netajis’ (village leaders who surface only during elections).

Probably for the first time in modern history, a cabinet meeting was being held outside the confines of air conditioned rooms of a capital city, away from the very comforts for which some politicians fight elections. Though symbolic, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar’s move epitomizes the change sweeping through the state; which the people had lost hope of ever seeing.

Barbighi was the third spot in Nitish’s Vikas Yatra and the man leading the campaign left no stone unturned to "reach out to the common people". His act in a way symbolized those famous words of Muktibodh, where he says;

Ab abhiwyakti ke saare khatre uthane hi honge, todne honge gadh aur math…

(It’s time to take all those risks of expression, we have to break the forts and the temples)

The protagonist of Muktibodh ( Gajanan Madhav Muktibodh) wants to break free from cliches and red tapeism paralyzing civic institutions in the state.

It was indeed a big day for the common man not just in Barbighi, but Bihar. The government, which used to make him go round in circles, was at his door steps. For those like me who believed in Muktiobodh’s progressivism, it is indeed a milestone of sorts as here was a man who promised a change or atleast offered that ray of hope to a state that had come to be known for everything but that.

But for true change to occur Bihar needs to rise above petty caste poiltics and fight against its own ‘Netas’ who would certainly resist any move to rid the state of cancerous casteism as it would deprive them of their vote banks. An honest effort should come from all those people, who love and care for the state and who take pride in calling themselves Biharis.

Since Kumar took over the Chief Ministership from Rabri Devi, Bihar has seen a considerable drop in naxalite attacks, as a result of the empowerment of police officers and restructuiring of the ‘thanas’ . Take for example the district of Begusarai. Once notorious for its criminal records, it had shot to (in)fame for recording the first ever case of ‘booth capturing’. It has now recorded a significant dip in crime, and is making headlines for holding the world’s first ever cabinet meet under public eyes.

Colleges are being rewarded for completing their course on time and the Bihar State Public Service Commission has acted swiftly to finish its back log.

Nitish took Bihar’s top job in 2005 after the people overwhelmingly voted him to power. Many believed that there would be a series of cases against Lalu and his team but the CM ensured that this did not happen.

His efforts in mobilising an all party meet after Bihar was ravaged in the 2008 floods highlighted his abilty to bury differences when it came to development and welfare of the people. Talking to media, Nitish acknowledged that a majority of the complaints he receives are against government officials. But he is not giving up and has now taken the battle against corruption into his own hands.

“I've decided to wage a war on corruption once I complete my Yatra", he says. The cabinet meet in a village definitely sends out the message that the government is not sitting in an ivory tower.

The languishing health sector in the state has also got a new lease of life. An innovative tracking system has been put in place by the Chief Minister. Government doctors have been provided a mobile phone each which they must carry at all times even when not on duty. Each mobile can be tracked through a global positioning system. Doctors can no longer avoid their duty and continue their private practice, refusing aid to those who need it the most.

But often political leaders have raised hopes only to disappoint, falling in the web of greed and corruption. Hardly ever have leaders converted people’s trust into a success story. Bihar has no dearth of goblins and that’s what Nitish has to guard against. Only then can he win the trust of a common man like Hare Ram doodhwala who feels that his four children will get a school in the village after Mukhiyamantri Ji’s promises.

If that happens, Nitish’s name will be inscribed in golden letters in history.

Nitishkumar ,Lalu Prasad Yadav, and Ram Vilas Paswan are all students of JaiPrakash Narayan. Change in leadership is just a natural outcome of social engineering. At heart they are all very good friends. Each leader is trying to do his best to raise the standard of Bihar. If Lalu Prasad gave a strong voice to people, Nitish is trying to give an engineering touch. The aim is only to raise the socially poor and downtrodden people. This power sharing will continue till the people of different castes of Bihar learn to live in peace and harmony. T

See,Sumit,Nitish Kumar has already won hearts of not only Bihar but also acroos the India. But being an Engineer,,he is,he should asked himself tha who will foot the bill fororganising such kind of session. One can imagine how much money has been expended on ferrying ministers,Bureaucrats nd whole machinery form Patna to a much distant place.Organising such kind of activitity in Patna itself will not attrat even a single penny.I`m against of Cm and others like Governe ersiding in palacial buldings,at the cost of public money, butthat is immaterial here now.Let`s confine our talk to Only Nitish holding Cabinet meeting in a remote place at the cost of public money. And that too when the general election is round the corner.I agains say that Nitish should not do such activities at the expence of public money.and it is not expecte form a politician like Nitish, who I also admire alot. nd I would like to remined you tha many criminals are very muchin the Nitish cabinets. It was not only the case with earlier govenment. And to your surprise majority of the complants made by the public in such meeting are against government`s failure to check corruption in ther own department and the ministers, who have not done much to their respective constituencies.

Indeed Bihar has got out of the mess created by the greedy leaders of rjd,ljp and congress.the days of kidnapping and ransom may be over by now.but the fear is lurking always .these anti nationals and antisocials are taking the name of social justice but doing unsocial works.the people of bihar are highly noble and they have get mukti from the tyranny of lalu and rambilash.the way have they earned thousnads of cores in the last 5 yaesr it must have been an eye opnener to all the biharis.they have destroyed the good name of bihar all over the country.the biharis are good and simple people but these goonda leaders have made a hell of bihar.it is a fortunate that the biahr removed the sackles of bondage from the lalu and rambilash who are mostly dacoit supporters.all the kidnappers, rapits and murderers are on their pay roll and they have nourished them healthy.the days of bondage is ovetr.peopleof bihar now resting on the freedom from kadnapping, goondaism, extortionists, rapiats.people of bihar are free to move daya nd night without fear or favour.we hail nitish as the great savious of bihar.we need such leaders to work relentlessly and make bihar a propserous state.we hate lalu and rambilsh.let them take sanyas or else we will give them their sanyas in the elections.

Sumit -
So then what according to you Rajat, Nitesh should be doing to win the confidence of people of Bihar who were left with nothing and just crime and criminals by the previous govt. I think u would be happy if he sits in his palatial CM bunglow and announces some recervations for some castes/ communities and does irresponsible mimiceries, something a jobles persen does. Or I feel u would be even happier if he sits back and eats and digests all the fodders (Chara) stocked/ hidden by the previous govt.

.m quiet satisfied with the ways Nitish Kumar is running the government in Bihar. He is doing his best to bring the Bihar on the development path.Vikas Yatra, which he launched recently should not be perceived as a welcome and unusual thing,he has done, rather, such types of gimmicks are being adopted by the various leaders and actors just to grab attention and personal mileage. As we all know that Bihar is sitting on bottom of the development ladder, then why he chosen this Vikas Yatra, when Bihar can`t afford to hold such kind of cabinet meeting at the expence of public money.Who will foot the bill for holding such kind of meeting?,Mr.Nitish Kumar is well aware of the fact that holding such kind of meeting miles away from the secretariate, will cost dearly to the state exchequer. But he thought little on this count.Actuaaly in the name of holding this Vikash Yatra,he is trying to launch his poll campaign way ahead from other political parties, for showcasing his government acheivements.as he has alreadly announced beautiffully, that this Vikas Yatra should not be linked with the upcoming general election. He is also trying to divert the public attention form his failure to protect the people of Eastern Bihar from the unprecedented flood last year.So.In my opinion he is holding this Vikas Yatra, just to gain more seats in the general election that too at the cost of public money. Recently Madhya Pradesh Govenment had also held a two day session for his government ministers for bringing reforms in their administrative and management skills. At the end of the two day session many of Chouhan`s cabinet collegues had derided his move in this regards and siad that they don`t required such kind of session, because they are well versed in managing both things. After all they are doing it for many years and that manifests form theisr successive wins in assembly elections. This two days session costed the MP Govenment Rs 50 Lakh. One can imagine how able Mp is in expending this huge amount of public money, when the state is crippled with many genuine problems.I believe that Nitish Kumar should not do such kind of activity,if he really wants to put Bihar on development path. But right now what he is doing in the name of Vikas Yatra is merely a politics of vote bank, but he has all rights to do that after all he is also a politician, like other politician. -

This is good to see improving Bihar Imagae on country map. The preceding govt of 15 yrs was entiry discouraging the depolopment of the state. All illegal activities had gone upto extrem. The good and gentlemen left Bihar due to lack of safety and security. The business men were left Bihar. The innocent publice couldnot do anything other than bearing the criminalism and bureaucracy. Now we see a ray of hope. People started coming back to his own state. We wish him (GOVT) to be contuine on his way.

Nitish is a product of 1974 Bihar Movement, but he is not a dramatist like Laloo Yadav. He may be serious for the Janata Sarkar, imagined by Lt. JP. I was also oneof the activists in the same movement. I with Nitish, Lalu, Shivanand etc.were were in the same jail during emergency.
