Losing Husain

The Observer
a
Ever since it came to light that legendry painter Maqbool Fida Husain was mulling to accept Qatar nationality, which was being conferred upon him by the Islamic State’s Royal Family, there has been a nationwide debate about the possible consequences of losing the country’s most celebrated painter.

The ‘awakened’ and the ‘enlightened’ citizenry has been spending sleepless nights debating the factors, which forced the legendry artist to think of renouncing Indian citizenship and the catastrophic effect it would have on the country’s secular and progressive image.

The news obviously came as a shocker for many of us, who mourned the development as a painful loss of an internationally renowned artist. However, for some people, India, which has suffered the exodus of some of its exceptionally talented minds preferring to settle abroad for a comfortable living, departure of another Indian would not have made a big difference.

However, Husain is not an ordinary man and considering his accomplishments, his artistic genius and his international recognition, the news obviously evoked sharp reactions from several quarters - the national media, the artists’ community and various political fronts.

There is no denying the fact that Husain’s departure will create a vacuum that would be hard to fill in the years to come.

Husain, who is revered by many as India's Pablo Picasso, belongs to a select breed of artists, which has successfully excelled in other occupations, interests and passions besides their own chosen stream.

His fondness for Indian classical music, his passion for making movies (Gajgamini and Meenaxi), and his interest in designing jewellery, tapestries and his love for photography and literature are all well known.

The widely-travelled artist, who is the winner of several international accolades for his contribution to the world of art and culture, still refuses to let old age and controversies take a toll on his work.

It would not be an exaggeration to say that no contemporary Indian artist has ever managed to pull of the feats achieved by Husain in terms of global recognition, awards and honours, or even the market price of his paintings, portraits etc.

His journey from a humble beginning in Pandharpur to acquiring the status of a living legend still inspires an entire genre of performing artists, who look up to him for encouragement and motivation.

But despite all this, I feel extremely sorry for the “fall from grace” of this “son of the soil”, who was once the “pride of India” till he courted controversies for his nude paintings of Hindu goddesses.

His objectionable portrayal of Mother India, his nude depiction of Hindu Goddesses and his reactionary work 'Rape of India' (displayed in ‘London Art Gallery’ after terrorist attacks in Mumbai), all offended the religious sentiments of Hindus.

The highly outrageous manner through which Husain essayed his thoughts on canvas fuelled a hate campaign spearheaded by right-wing Hindu organisations and several law suits against him that followed.

The criticism and the unending threats to his life forced the artist to live in exile and he consequently slipped out of India. He tendered an apology, but only after he had exited the country.

I, like many of his admirers, still wonder why Husain chose to portray Mother India and Hindu Goddesses in nude, when he was already at the pinnacle of success.

Was he not aware of the possible consequences of his objectionable work or was it the greed for more publicity (however adverse it may be) or was it a reflection of his psychology or probably a highly divisive mindset.

If he was such a genuine artist, then why did he lack the courage to make similar painting about terrorist attacks with painting of gods/goddesses of other religions as well?

Instead of expressing the deep anguish of Indians and pains of our benevolent motherland, Husain further humiliated all of us by the disgraceful portrayal of Mother India being raped and torn between bulls and man.

The painting was not just an insult to Hindus; it was clearly demeaning for the people from all communities, caste, colour or creed, who regard India as their motherland and have lived peacefully in her lap for centuries.

This pain and humiliation was inflicted upon us by none other than Husain, who was once the beloved son of India. At a time when several renowned art and music exponents had faded into the oblivion, lived miserable lives and failed to get the honour they deserved, Husain was conferred the ‘Padmashree’ by the Government of India in 1966. The following year he received a Golden Bear for his widely appreciated work “Through the Eyes of a Painter” displayed at the Berlin Festival.

He was nominated to the Rajya Sabha in 1987 and during his 6-year term in the Upper House he famously produced the Sansad Portfolio. His autobiography "Pendhapur ka ek Ladka" is regarded as a master piece of any Indian artist written in Hindi language.

But despite all the adulation and affection which the nation showered on Husain, he has left many of us with wounds that simply can’t be healed.

No amount of justification, whatsoever it may be (in the name of artistic freedom, freedom of expression and the liberties which one gets in a democracy), can reverse the damage he has done to the Hindu community. And if it can, then why did Muslim fundamentalists and clerics world-over raise a hue and cry when Prophet Muhammed was caricatured?

Does it not also prove that the revered painter took his artistic freedom too far and ignored that his provocative work would have an adverse impact on people’s mindsets.

Having said that, I would like to add that Husain’s case also raises several questions about whether fundamentalists should be allowed to compel a celebrity to settle abroad in view of constant threat to his life in his own country.

Of course, Husain has been the victim of our fractured political fraternity, which has its own reasoning of supporting or opposing any issue considering its impact on their vote bank and the risk of facing a religious backlash.

Is it not the collective responsibility of the political fraternity to preserve the cultural fabric of the country by denouncing fundamentalists threatening artists like Husain and assuring full safety to them?

Debate on the artist’s conduct is welcome and desirable, but the foremost focus should have been on minimising the dent which the Husain episode has caused to the secular identity of the nation.

Now, as the things unfold in the future, it will be clear if the efforts to lure this son of the soil and the Centre’s assurance of full security will compel Husain to change his mind. As things stand, it seems unlikely as Husain has already applied for Overseas Indian Citizenship (OIC) card. This is a clear indication that though he doesn’t want to cut off ties with India, he is in no hurry to comeback either.

Hang M F Hussian.. M F Hussain does not know how to respect our religion. he can only take care of his mother and daughter. Ask him to do the same type of painting as he did for Hindu Goddess.

Then only he would be called a great painter without any biased feeling towards our religion

I do not know how ART is found in painting nude Godesses. I mean, this could have been averted. I think freedom of expression also comes with little responsibility and Sh. M.F Hussain caught there with pants down.

I do not think that anyone could have tolerated had this been a reverse angle- I mean painting of Muslim religious characters in nude by some Hindu painter.

And this was best and wise for M.F to stay away from India- we do not loose a genius but we managed to save many lives which could have gone in any riot coming out of this.

It`s not India`s lost. Good riddance for one who does not even give respect or give credence in the land he claims he love. Looking forward to his new indecent (Islamic) drawings - if he dare - and see whether he get booted out in his new abode.

I don`t understand why people are making hue and cry of this matter. Hussain`s psychology clearly reflects in his paintings. If he is such an open minded artist why hasn`t he painted his mother(shirin) or mother of some muslim prophet being raped or nude. Will any one person of you would like such a great painting of women of your family. Don`t try to be Mr. justice if you can`t tolerate the same.
Don`t try to put secularism in examples. Better we implement it in a relevent way.
The problem with you so called intellectual hindus is that, you love to preach secularism with sip of tea very easily. The things matter only when it happens to you.

I agree that Hussain has taken too much of liberty with his artisitc talent. If he had been a true artist he should have given a true reply to the complaints in court. An artist does not worry abt his life but his art. He simply ran away instead of facing the reality or truth. In a society artist freedom cannot be taken beyond a limit. If the artist fraternity feels we betrayed him let them answer why he is silent? The man who lives by truth will never remain silent if the aligations on him are wrong.

There are few muslims who are responsible for such an ill feeling created against whole community in the owrld.

True Muslims should keep a watch on them and try to be away from all controveries. Good Points raised in the article.

Dear Ritesh,

I read your other blog Har Har Gangey and also, your other articles on Maha Kumbh , the Akharas, Haridwar, Places to visit around Haridwar. I find them very well written and very informative. I thank you for those articles.

This one - I think your end message is right, but the praise of MFH is something we could do without given how he has hurt our sensitivities.

Helal, your words are very cleverly written `Second what he paint of particular god or godess is not aceptable in country like India and he must not do this to express his thought, we condemn this.`

So, its not acceptable in country like India, but can do it elsewhere?

Do you have any comment on something I found on Wikipedia.:

The word ``al-taqiyya`` literally means: ``Concealing or disguising one`s beliefs, convictions, ideas, feelings, opinions, and/or strategies at a time of imminent danger, whether now or later in time, to save oneself from physical and/or mental injury.`` In political terms, it is used by critics of Islam to describe what they see as intentional concealment of Islamic doctrines in order to gain influence and deceive so-called ``enemies of Islam``.

``Let not the believers take for friends or helpers unbelievers rather than believers. If any do that, in nothing will there be help from Allah except by way of precaution, that ye may guard yourselves from them.`` Sunni commentator Ibn Kathir explained that ``believers that fear for their safety from the unbelievers... are allowed to show friendship to the unbelievers outwardly, but never inwardly.``

``If you [Muslims] are under their [infidels`] authority, fearing for yourselves, behave loyally to them, with your tongue, while harboring inner animosity for them. … Allah has forbidden believers from being friendly or on intimate terms with the infidels in place of believers — except when infidels are above them [in authority]. In such a scenario, let them act friendly towards them.

@Helal Ghazali - ``Muslims from begening of it`s faith live and dressed well till today, some country still follow full body cover for women by Niqab or Burqa, for Hindu religion nothing to say find out yourself.``

Yes, and using that Burqa / Niqab, they conceal bombs and then, blow themselves up together with innocent people. Regarding MF Husain, he has clearly betrayed all of us. He is a traitor.

Helal Ghazali, I did not intend to hurt your community but now when u have started the blame game let me say that ur religion encourages some of the most weirdst things the mankind has ever seen - the female Genital Cutting? Look at it up. No religion is bad in itself it is the people who make it worse or glorify it. How can u justify anything that degrades another religion and offends sentiments of millions who follow it?

Helal Ghazali - Hajipur: You show your true Islamic Colors. You don`t want to defend the Islamic MF, but wanted to take the opportunity to bash Hindus.

There`s a difference between Taslima and your MF. Taslima is not an Indian and she has been asked to leave India. Additionally, she didn`t try to pulverize another community. She was just pointing about Burqa.

Hindu religion doesn`t have any vulgar depictions. By the way, try to get out of your Islamic mindset and understand the difference between satvikta and vulgarity.

Mandakini, Negar Khan, Huma Khan are Islamic right? This itself shows the poor state of your mind.

First thing to all who abuse MF HUSAIN in the name of Muslim must know there is nothing of Islam except his name in MF Husain, Islam does not permited to paint Human or animals, because making idol or painting but can not gave breath to live. That`s why very rare to find painter or sculptures artist in Muslim community.
Second what he paint of particular god or godess is not aceptable in country like India and he must not do this to express his thought, we condemn this.
But big question is that why people are trying to invent `double`` standerd in Husain`s painting by comparing with picture of personality from muslim community? If India is a good home, a safe shelter for controvercial Bangladeshi author,a non-Indian Taslima Nasreen who too insulting and hurting the faith and sentiments of about 1.57 billion Muslims globally or about 76 Millions Muslims of Indian subcontinent then what`s wrong with MF Hissain to stay in India?
Let be honest to compare any thing with all aspect.
Last, Muslims from begening of it`s faith live and dressed well till today, some country still follow full body cover for women by Niqab or Burqa, for Hindu religion nothing to say find out yourself.

MF Hussain. A fool of highest order. Anybody who tries to to defend him should first try to think about his or her own origin. No one , make no mistake, no one has gotten away with insulting Hiduism, a religion older than any other civilisation on earth. Every body paid a price. Look at Mongolia.Bloody rapists have been reduced to beggars. Look at Afghanisthan. Nothing more to say. IT IS KARMA,. Hussain should kill himself.

Mr.Srivastava should be worried more about people of his ilk being hounded out of Mumbai than MF by the very same rightists he is balming for MF`s flight!!
Different people have different worries unlike our great author Srivastava!
Shoba De/Testasetalvad and her ilks are worried about of how to get MF back to paint more of her gender in NUDE!.
Poor indians are worried about where the next meal is going to come from!
Rich indians worried where the next million is going to come from!
People in between thinking where the next bomb is going to explode!
All the thinking is done in the comfort or discomfort of your surroundings!! and MF is not in any of Indians surroundings at the moment so stop worrying about him.
common people have no time to debate something which is not fundamental to their existence their. Since your profession is to write you are worried about MF and create the same worry in common mans psyche. I would rather advise you to worry on if and whether you will reach the place where you write or if you will have the limbs to write if a bomb goes off when you eat/drink/chat/write/have fun!!
Wake up Mr.Srivastava. MF will be like any other Bomb Blast that we Indians are used to in a few days. He will be real MF- Most Forgotten!

Whatever one says about MF Husain, one thing is clear that no one can get a license to undermine a particular religion or offend the followers of particular region. His shameful work has made a mockery of the Hindu religion. I bet, Qatar’s Royal family would not have offered him their country’s nationality had he done anything unacceptable to Muslims world over. They would have issued a fatwa against him and he might have been killed.

Mr Husain has done a great damage to the secular fabric of our country by painting Hindu Goddesses and Mother India in the nude. Can he show the same courage and paint Prophet Md, his grandsons Hussain and Ali in the same way. Can he paint Jesus, Buddha, Mother Mary in the same manner. If No, then he has no right to offend Hindus.

When art becomes expression of perversion then the people like Hussain becomes famous. I do not agree that Hussain is a famous painter. Folks, just tell the a name of any famous paint of him which is not controversial. he became famous only after creating controversy. And for this he chose the Hindus gods and goddesses because he was aware that if he is going to create such paintings there would be some controversy and he would gain popularity and there are pseudo secular politicians and artists who would of course support him. To summarize you can say that he thought it was safe to humiliate Hindu gods. If he did the same thing to the Muslim religious personalities he would be killed, just like the fatwa against the Danish painter and Taslima. There are so many people who support Hussain in India. For them I would like to ask some simple questions why there is so hue and cry for the MF Hussain only ?The Danish painter also deserves support. Why don`t you oppose the fatwa which is declared to kill the artist ? I have the answer that is you persons are afraid of the radical Muslims. Just remember one thing if you are fearful then you are not artist.

Many people in the internet say “arrey yaar hindu god/goddesses idols are nude then what is the wrong in painting them nude.” Then show me any ancient picture where saraswati or Laxmi is nude. Ignorance is dangerous but half-knowledge is more dangerous than ignorance. Before giving comments they should know the reason.

I oppose the Qatar citizenship of Hussain. not because I am his fan but because I wish he would be punished for his deeds. It is not a joke that you hurt the sentiments of Hindus and just slip away to safe heaven.

For those who support Hussain one more thing I have to tell you that photo manipulation is also an art. Would they appreciate if anybody manipulates the photo of their female family members with their heads and any nude porn actress` bodies?

The writer of this blog has written much about his paintings but he has not thrown much light about other face of Hussain. He
is an admant painter. He wants to hurt millions of hinuds feelings. Unfortunately some of the Hindus are not bothering of hurting of feelings of Hindus. They don`t want to follow the sacred tradition of Hindus. Why he had shown nudity of
hindu goddess through his paintings. He
is liability to the Hindus even though he is
renowned for his paintings. The writer
of this blog should not unnecessarily praise
about his paintings and partially blind about
sentiments of Hindus.

Mr. Hussain has done a right thing of moving out of India forever. True he is a good artist who is communal to the core. He fully exploited the freedom of expression in our country and in that process hurt the sentiments of majority Hindu population. He painted in nude Goddess Durga in sexual union with tiger while he painted prophet’s daughter Fatima full clothed. He painted Goddess Laxmi naked on Shri Ganesh’s head while Hussain’s mother is fully clothed. Everybody is aware of a famous painting of Goddess Saraswati by Raja Ravi Verma. Mr. Hussain painted Saraswati in nude. He painted “Rape of India” – Bharat Mata being raped by two bulls and so on. He could not face the music of a large number of cases against him as his paintings hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus. He constantly refused to express regret for his discriminative acts of painting nudes only Hindu Gods and Goddesses .Now Shri MF Hussain will have full freedom in Qatar for painting nude Hindu Gods and Goddesses without any fear. He will be certainly prosecuted and thrown out of Qatar if he tries to paint Fatima in nude.

Sumit - Mumbai:

Very well put - every city is forced to live on, even though our souls have been battered. Its not as if we have a choice.

Now, coming to the blog - the blogger seems very liberal in his praise and perhaps even sympathy of the MF.

The first question to be asked is - if the MF is so popular with the secular world, how come countries like Britain, U.S. or other European Countries did not offer him the citizenship? Why was it an Islamic (non secular) Country that offered him citizenship? Is it because he furthered their agenda of humiliating the kafir Hindus?

The blogger says ``The ‘awakened’ and the ‘enlightened’ citizenry has been spending sleepless nights debating the factors``. At one point, the blog also suggests that it is `fundamentalists` who compeled the MF to run abroad.
My response- well, I wasn`t sleepless at all. Does that make me `asleep` (figuratively) and `uncivilized` and a `fundamentalist` if I just want the culture of my beloved country to be retained and not be overrun by Islamic Fanaticism? I would say that even though the likes of Shobha De and Teesta Setalwad were probably worried (more about how to sieze the opportunity to bash Hindus), this Islamic MF was probably laughing at them.

Lets not make this issue any bigger that it needs to be - this MF took up citizenship for his own convenience. As we are all aware, many Indians including software professionals who work / study abroad, take up citizenship of those countries for different reasons including employment and business opportunities, social factors, travel convenience and so on. People do it for their own convenience. That Indian citizenship law doesn`t allow dual citizenship is purely a matter of law. And so, really is it such a big deal that this MF renounced the citizenship of India to take up citizenship of another country?

The blogger says ``Is it not the collective responsibility of the political fraternity to preserve the cultural fabric of the country by denouncing fundamentalists threatening artists like Husain and assuring full safety to them?``.
Well, I am not even going to bring up the ever popular Salman Rushdie and Taslima Nasreen into this. Let me point out our own British Proxy Congress Government. If artistic expression or freedom of speech is a given in our secular democracy, can anyone tell me why we still cannot buy `Satanic Verses` (ok, I did not bring Rushdie into this directly) or even any books on Nathuram Godse in India legally? And what about that Islamic Terrorist who brutally murdered Theo Van Gogh in Netherlands by nearly decapitating his head when Theo Van Gogh hadn`t even shown anything vulgar - just the plain reality?

The blogger says ``Debate on the artist’s conduct is welcome and desirable, but the foremost focus should have been on minimising the dent which the Husain episode has caused to the secular identity of the nation.``
My question - Is this what we`re reduced to now? Seeking approval in the eyes of the world rather than doing what`s right? The fact that France has banned burqa and is now considering banning halal meat, or Switzerland has banned minarets, or Norway and Sweden have boldly published the cartoons in several newspapers to make a point, or that Netherlands is looking to banish Islam (do a wiki search for Geert Wilders) from the country make them non secular countries? Or just ones that follow common sense?

How would you like to phrase the terrorist attack on Mumbai?

Would you in some sort of a blind zeal, like to just pay a tribute to the spirit of people of Mumbai and praise how the city lives on.

Does not London, New Orleans, Haiti, all live on. Yes they do. Every city is forced to live on.

There are continuous and repetitive terrorist attacks across the city - each day when my dear ones take the train, I am afraid. I can face that fear, I LIVE ON with it, but my friend, I AM AFRAID.

So are we not victims of rape - a rape that makes us fearful of being out on crowded streets, afraid of unknown faces, unable to productively and freely use our liberty?

Wake Up Dude! M F Hussain can still pursue painting whether nude or not and carry whatever the passport which he prefers.

I assume he is bachelor and passed 80 years, so it doesn`t matter to anyone whatever he does and wherever, especially when paints for rich but not general public.

He dragged his feet to overseas and no one is responsible for his acts, except himself! Common man will not care him in India!
