Is Anna going overboard?

The Observer
a
With Anna Hazare getting MCD’s nod to stage a protest at the Ramlila Maidan from December 27, our proactive 24X7 media will again throng the historic ground to catch every glimpse of the anti-crusader’s head-on collision with the Congress-led ruling coalition. The first week of the Parliament’s Winter Session has been washed out and despite several appeals from the Prime Minister, a united Opposition is hell bent on disrupting the proceedings in days to come.

So it seems highly unlikely that the government would be able to pass several important legislations including the most controversial Lokpal Bill. The government appears to be helpless and Anna’s team is desperate to see that the anti-graft bill is passed in Parliament. Anna in past threatened to stage massive protests if there is no headway on the issue in this session of the Parliament.

On December 27, the Lokpal jamboree and the entire nation will witness the sequel of Anna’s historic Ramlila Maidan fast, which whipped the nation’s rage against the UPA government for its half-hearted measures in fighting corruption in public life.

But the bigger question here is: Will it work this time? Will the managers of Anna’s Lokpal campaign succeed in generating the same heat as they did in past? Shouldn’t he give some more time to our politicians to arrive at a consensus? Is he aware of the flip-flops and the shortcomings of his own movement before passing the entire blame on the political class for the present deadlock on the Lokpal issue? Why is Anna not shifting his focus to other issues of equal importance?

This certainly needs to be debated.

Like millions of my brethren, I also look up to him in anticipation that my countrymen will eventually reap the fruits of his august revolution when an effective anti-graft mechanism comes into force. There is no doubt that his movement against corruption has awakened the nation from a deep slumber and united it for a good cause.

It was his conviction and determination that forced the Parliament to agree in principle to bring lower bureaucracy in the ambit of Lokpal, appointing Lokayuktas in the states and a citizen's charter for government departments.

However, few months later, his movement seems to be losing rhythm and direction. His movement appears to be moving on a different track and a ‘non-political’ Anna is now being blamed for working with a ‘hidden political agenda.’

Anna’s movement has gone haywire at numerous levels since its start. Anna’s chosen aides initially managed the Lokpal agitation quite well, but with their repeated flip-flops they have now fallen flat, giving their rivals a chance to capitalise on their mistakes.

Those who were attacked by the anti-corruption crusader in the beginning are now hitting back and projecting themselves as the custodians of parliamentary democracy, which is facing threats from Anna and his team. Strangely enough, those who started the India Against Corruption movement, claiming to strengthen the people’s democracy (Lok Satta) are now on the back foot defending themselves in the quagmire of dubious distinctions.

Anna’s political neutrality is being questioned and he has been alleged to be acting as an undercover agent of BJP with clandestine support of right-wing Hindu outfit RSS.

Anna made a number of tactical mistakes. The first was to nominate two persons from the same family in the Lokpal committee- Prashant and Shanti Bhushan. Secondly, he distanced himself from Baba Ramdev, who had first raised the issue of black money and corruption. He gave a free hand to a bunch of highly ambitious people, who slowly hijacked his movement over their personal grievances against the system.

Anna also shooed away those political leaders who lent full support to his movement cutting across the party lines such as Uma Bharti and Om Prakash Chautala. One by one, most of his trusted lieutenants were accused of financial irregularity, tax evasion, misappropriation of funds and making controversial statements, suggesting plebiscite on J&K.

Anna’s decision to campaign against the Congress during the Hisar Lok Sabha by-elections in Haryana also led to differences among the team with two of his close associates - Rajendra Singh and PV Rajgopal – who made a quick exit following differences over Anna’s political stand. This was probably the first time, when Anna, a revered national icon, jumped into the political arena, triggering severe backlash from Congress, which accused him of being the ‘plan B’ of the main opposition BJP.

It was around this time when 94-year-old Gandhian Shambhu Dutt, who ended his fast-unto-death demanding Lokpal bill after Team Anna's promise to take the campaign forward, regretted his decision of handing over his fight to Anna and his team of "yes men".

Even Hazare's blog, which started connecting with the younger generation and maintained the momentum of his anti-corruption crusade, came under scanner after his official blogger, Raju Parulekar, wrote that the veteran social activist wanted to restructure the all-powerful core committee. Parulekar claimed that the septuagenarian crusader wanted to throw "undemocratic and fascist" Kejriwal, Kiran Bedi, Prashant Bhushan and "their pawns" out of the core group.

Parulekar also claimed that he possessed a hand-written note by Anna, but regretted that it was not posted online under pressure from Kejriwal, Kiran Bedi and Prashant Bhushan. Anna later distanced himself from Parulekar and ended his blog. The latest controversy surrounding Anna is his suggestions to flog the drunkards publicly. A man considered to be Mahatma Gandhi’s modern day incarnation is now being equated with Taliban, which resorts to such radical ways to punish the violators of the Sharia laws.

Anna’s biggest mistake is his failure to understand the country’s political mechanism and that a parliamentary democracy has several loose ends and it works with its own pace. It cannot be forced or blackmailed to produce desired results. By claiming that the Jan Lokpal Bill drafted by his team is the best one, he seems to have underestimated the genius of people like Arun Jaitley, Sitaram Yechury, Fali Nariman who could have further pushed his fight for Lokpal.

It would be incorrect to say that Congress government is sitting idle and not doing the needful. In fact, the UPA regime has initiated several measures to curb corruption and has planned legislations like the whistle-blower protection act and other safeguards to prevent corruption in the private sector.

Anna should avoid projecting himself as the self-appointed authority on corruption and his team should refrain from stealing all the limelight on the anti-graft crusade. We need to understand that the scourge of corruption can’t be handled single-handedly. We need to eradicate it from our psyche if we really aspire to build a corruption-free society.

Anna is a revered figure and his love for the nation is unquestionable. He should tread his path carefully and should also complement the government for taking commendable initiatives. He should also question non-Congress governments, which are facing criticism over graft, nepotism and other evils which politics and power wields. He should also keep in mind that leading a mass movement is like walking on a tightrope.

i am watching anna hazare news. i am happy that we have a single person i called anna to push for something which this corrupt politicians are against it. i am also sad that we have a billion people who are not doing as much as they should. corruption has virtually made india a laughing stock in the world incapable of looking after it`s own people - please india support anna and ensure what gandhi death is not in vein. indians outside india who are also behind you.

our constitutional rules are man made. do you thing that the one who wrote this, could have imagined that after 50 years there will be technology called internet? or mobile phone? etc?. they wrote according the situation of that time.please try to imagine the situation in 40s and 50s. after that the polititions found the loop holes and started to misusing, corruption etc... why the plitions oppose this suggession?? every one know that after 5 years there will be an election and somebody could take the seat and what anna hazare is asking for common. also he is not asking to make his uncle to any position. so the picture is very clear that the ruling party want to keep the cbi as magic tool to rule their emimies. otherwise why they are afraid to include cbi?.finally to combat with this corruption we need some mechanism that should be free from polititions interferrence and this job can`t be handed over to those who are involved. this is only mr. hazare asking.

in my openion anna hazare,s movement is now hijacked by his team membors you cannot force the govt to change the whole things in one go. if any thing goees wrong the whole exersice will go into dustbin. its should be step by step. because we are following this system since independance and is not easy in other words its failure rate is much higher. the lokpal system shoul be implemented in step by step. because there is going to be initial teething problems so if we impelement all togethor its failure will be more and india at this stage of economical pressure cannot afford the failure. team anna should understand this or else it will jeoprdose the whole administration setup of the country.

congress must know the ground realities first. anna is not a single person is fighting against the corruption. anna expressing the feelings of the indians, who are furious agasint corrupted policians, officers for years. people wanted someone to lead the front. anna has the guts and he leads now. if the congress party now in opposition bench, definately, it will support anna`s movement. now it is in ruling bench, so it shows its power and stubborness againt opposition parties. inspite of this, congress will jerk as soon as, its partners like ms mamata and dmk turned down. it will happen for someother thing, not for jan lokpal bill. at least if ms mamata turned down, no other way to go,congress will bring the bill. as long as its partners shows mum, it will go against mr anna and his team. it`s not good for the future of the congress party as a whole.

the all party debate reminds me of the time between 1986-89 when the country found a new anti corruption mascot in v. p. singh , and also how the opposition rallied behind the wily politician.we all know , what turmoil our country was into between the period 1989 to 1992.just like opposition then , team anna is a bunch of disgruntled individuals who have germinated in anti congressism . anti congressism did`nt succeeded then , it will not succeed now .

anna is an image created by media and urban population who do not go to vote booth to participate in electoral process. when there is dearth of news suddenly the media creates anna wave.
even anna has started grabbing media attention. if he is so capable then why does not he join politics. he knows the complexity of indian democracy. those people who go to anna`s fast farce on sundays should first come forward on election day to choose a leader for parliament. its very easy to escape by blaming politicians.lets awake

opposition for jan lokpal bill is from government officers and from ministers and from mps and from mlas and from their relatives. but they are only less than 10%. common people are more than 90%. all indians should not forget the names and their faces who are opposing the jan lokpal bill. be careful of them. those who oppose the jan lokpal bill are the traitors. the jan lokpal bill means rich india. the jan lokpal bill means corrupt free india. the jan lokpal bill means developed india. those who oppose the jan lokpal bill are the enemies of india. better be aware of them, they are jealous of indians. jai hind.

if the course of actions of anna team is scrutinised ,there is no doubt that it is a front of rss and bjp.whatever, this govt. may to do accommodate their views, they will ultimately reject it and force a naive anna hazare who is simpleton and having iq not more than that of a driver will be forced by anna team to go on indefinite fast and thus giving an opportunity to opportunist traitor gang of rss/bjp (who killed father of the nation )to cry that present govt. wants to kill anna and charge the emotions of the people.
they have done on regular basis by spreading rumours and provoking riots, charging emotions by demolishing babri masjid, deliberately allowed godhara to happen(how a strong cm did not act to prevent godhara inspite of intelligence reports ),spreading riots, just to strenghthen hindu vote bank on the foundationof hatred towards minorities ,to get the power.
now, they have a weapon in the form of anna hazare, who on the wave of popularity cannot comprehend that he is being used by rss, whose only agenda is to come to power at any cost, even if india is to be in turmoil and developement is to stop.do not forget that terrorism in india has flourished in india only after babri demolition.
let us fight not only against corruption but for establishing rule of law in all areas but beware of an organisation who is now preaching for full freedom of speech ,does not take a minute in crushing tehelka, murdering his owm men haren pandya etc.,crushing anybody who comes in its way ,when in power.
building nation is a hard task, but has to be carried out.
my request will be, let us blog no doubt, but we should work in our areas to ensure that only a person with wisdom, highest level of integrity, with fair knowledge of admonistration and empathy towards weak and dalit section of people. is elected as mla or mp.
i know rss /bjp elements will abuse me in all ways possible, but i know that there are hundreds of millions of people who think like me, they see the game of these lumpens and will not allow fascist as well as corrupt people to come to power. jai hind. ptbr567@yahoo.co.in

Anna and his team consider themselves above parliament and constitution. handful self appointed authority people can not decide fate of 12 million people whereas parliament is. anna is working for the benefit of opposition with hidden agenda. poverty, population, terrorism, country security is not his agenda but to dictate his terms vis-a-vis other intellectuals of nation is his agenda.non-violence not is not his principle. he is a spot on gandhi and ism.

dear friend ! anna is committed, sincere and above all honest to the core, who cannot be corrupted by these lousy third grade politicians. hence their anger on him and his team. rest assured, his popularity has not gone done, nor has his commitment. it is time the nation stood by him in this hour of need of the nation, and not of anna as mentioned by you. if you wish to write, do write something positive. don`t be yet another sibal or digvijay, who are sick minded.

it is yet another futile attempt in the shape of the present blog to raise a wall between anti-graft activists and corrupt party in power. anna can`t answer your questions based on political intelligence. let anna do his job. please don`t try to divert the nation`s focus at this juncture.

let this demon of corruption die now. enough is enough. no ``but`s`` or ``if`s``. those are old tactics of so called intellectuals who are highly egoistic and reactive to subvert all noble national movements in this country. which is why we often see such people on tv panels asking ``who is anna? is he a politician or an intellectual like lalloo, amar singh, kapil, diggy, naqvi or chidam?``

please think what the countrymen are saying ``mein bhi anna, too bhi anna, ab to sara desh hai anna.` your article seems to be prejudiced and affected with `c` company. it is lacking a countrymanship feel.

what we see here is a combined effort by govt to weaken the movement even before it begins, and this is the best way. hire some wannabe journalists, pay them sum hundreds to write such articles. on the other hand, efforts are on to tap the social media. ck these wannabes, come 27 dec and we will again unite with anna, in his quest for the india we have dreamt of.

at one end you admire that anna is grate and has honest nationalist thinking, while at other end you advise him what should he do and what not (making your self much intelligent and capable than anna) than why cant you lead this novel cause ? be leader or be follower so far national interest matters are concern. 2nd we are not able to understand why you (and congress) want to keep rss away from such nationalist movements. is rss personals are not indian nationalist and country citizens (or in layman`s tone are they pakistani) ? if they follow anna (or even if they organise movement), what is wrong ?
