BJP, missing Atal ji

ATAL BEHARI VAJPAYEE, former Prime Minister and the only BJP leader India loved and cherished remains an enigma. Perhaps the mystery contributing to the enduring fascination; yet, today the witty poet has no words for the party he created.

The man who could make any debate sparkle with witty asides such as when asked in Parliament “Atalji aap atal rahiye”, smiled and said, “Atal toh hoon lekin bhooliye mat, Bihari bhi hoon.” And who went to a RSS shakha wearing his customary dhoti and chortled at the sea of Khakhi shorts and said, “Pehle kyun nahi bataya, mein bhi pehen leta” (why did you not tell me before, I would also have worn shorts) thereby further underlining the difference between him - a political leader and the RSS. He today watches, eight months after the RSS took complete and formal control of the BJP with Nitin Gadkari, a provincial leader with no national exposure.

Everytime, RSS Sanghsarchalak, Dr Mohan Bhagwat, a vet, holds forth on how the BJP leadership needs to change, even those people who believe that Mr L K Advani is a completely lacklustre leader, who has lost the BJP two general elections, groan. Says Mr Brijesh Mishra, former principal secretary and national security advisor to Mr Vajpayee, “Vajpayeeji knew where to draw the line. There is a crisis in the BJP today because there is a leadership vacuum. Actions such as the expulsion of Mr Jaswant Singh are pointless and serve to convince people that this is less a political party and more some bizarre cult run by out of touch septuagenarians.”

To be described thus by an insider for the principal national opposition party is a come down indeed. And, the reasons are many. The blind ambition of one man, to be prime minister at any cost, the vapid grasping leadership of some second-generation leaders who thought that political graduation to real leadership came through the drawing rooms of Delhi, and the fluffing over genuine intellectual leadership challenge such as the Gujarat riots and the taint of Varun Gandhi.

So lost was the BJP in its delusions that it actually thought that it would sweep Uttar Pradesh after Varun Gandhi’s poison. Then party president Rajnath Singh promptly tried to clamber on to the bandwagon; cancelled seven announced public meetings and rushed to Naini jail to deliver Gandhi a change of clothes and the faithful a message. Gandhi, when asked by this correspondent about his poisonous messages and whether he actually believed in them said very patronizingly, “You must learn to listen.”

The miserable, failure of the election nonetheless, Singh continued to act on the RSS message. Despite his own singular failure as a mass leader in UP, the man described by BJP MP Mr Arun Shourie as a ‘’lachar thakur’’ tried and failed to cut down all other contenders in the BJP. He always tried to pretend that he was the man with the magic wand – the RSS – and would wave it and make all political challenges vanish. Unfortunately for the BJP, he never saw the opposition as competition, for to him it was personal and always Mr Arun Jaitly. Says a senior leader, “After the last electoral debacle we kept getting a lot of pressure from his office that he now fancied himself as a parliamentarian and wanted to speak in the house.” Problem was that they insisted that the man who has tried and failed to copy Atalji’s oratory wanted to speak on “Crissy”. We taxed our brains and finally I called and asked him who this mystery lady was. It turned out it was “Krishi” (agriculture). That in a nut-shell is the failure of the BJP’s communication skills.

Or take the case of the self-styled Sardar Patel part two or the grandiosely titled PM in waiting, Advani. As home minister he was prevented by Atalji from releasing a white paper on the ISI after the intelligence agencies indignantly pointed out that he would be making their assets public. On three separate and vital occasions, on issues of immense national interest, Mr Advani suffered selective amnesia preferring to pass the buck and the blame to the silent Mr Vajpayee. On the release of Masood Azhar and two other occasions he was exposed as by his own angry cabinet colleagues such as Mr Jaswant Singh. But, as Mishra who also exposed the hypocrisy points out, “How can you call yourself a leader and then waffle and fudge?”

Even his meaningless offer to resign following the BJP’s worst ever electoral defeat in the last elections was hollow. His coterie, guided only by self-interest, promptly persuaded him to change his mind. The story put out that the RSS wanted him to stay was scotched by Bhagwat himself, leaving Advani with egg on his face. Says one of his erstwhile camp-followers in a catty aside, “Problem is that he has no hobbies so he is refusing to leave. He should have taken up gardening of bonsai.” Advani’s stature in the BJP these days is rather bonsai sized with daily calls by the RSS in public for a bow-out from public life.

His followers, the second generation leaders who have grabbed all the plums, now make unconvincing noises about how he is waiting for a graceful exit. But, says a BJP leader rather ruefully, “When you hang on with your thumb nails and are publicly told to go what grace are we talking about! He wanted to be Sardar Patel but, instead became Sardar Buta Singh. And even now, despite the media plants, he still does not want to leave.”

There was feverish speculation in the BJP, but even that brief flurry of hope came to nothing. Recounts one of the aides for the campaign - Advani for PM, “The minute I saw the photograph of him trying to weight-lift, I knew we had lost. The palpable desperation to project youth in a bid to take on Rahul Gandhi, the daily attacks on a decent and learned man like Dr Manmohan Singh; the BJP was only wallowing in negativity. We had nothing to say to the country.”

In a bizarre kind of parallel with Pakistan and Jinnah, which the BJP seems to be obsessed with, it was almost as if the BJP had trapped itself in a negative mindset - stuck in partition somewhat like Pakistan while the rest of India had moved on and did not want the politics of grievance mongering.

Today, Advani finds himself all alone while all the second generation leaders he created such as Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitly , Venkaiah Naidu and Ananth Kumar are publicly told by the RSS that they are most “unwanted”. Even in their 60s they call themselves the “second generation”. The late Pramod Mahajan, told this correspondent half in jest, “I have become a grand-father and the party still considers me a teenager.” And, teens are known for their tantrums and hissy-fits which in the BJP appear in the shape of newspapers headlines and TV sound-bites.

“While the Congress party has a genuine youth leadership, we still have these seniors fancying themselves as young and ensuring that no real youth even come in to the party. We have a great bench strength, but still cannot even play the game. In a way Advani’s continuance for the last election ensured that the second generation had no future”, rues one of them.

Even without the daily plants and tantrums of the second generation, the BJP is shying away from grasping the Modi nettle. This in essence is the crisis of the BJP. Many believe that the Gujarat riots cost the BJP a general election, yet currently, Modi is only genuine mass leader of the BJP. If he was made President, it would electrify the faithful yet would ensure that the BJP could not become the party of government in alliance. Even the intellectual dishonesty repeatedly displayed, be it the destruction of the Babri Masjid or the complete lack of regret for the Gujarat riots, has eaten away at the heart of the great national project that the BJP was.

And, one man who had the intellect to understand the idea of India and make all of India connect to him watches silently like Bhishma on his bed of arrows, as the RSS and the BJP indulge in a modern Mahabharat. Let’s give the last word to Jaswant Singh on Atalji, “When there is too much to say the wise keep quiet.”

i totally diagree with this useless article.
what is the contribution of vajpayee to his party? nothing. he brought the party to 2 seats. it is advani who brought the party to power and vajpayee enjoyed it. he never addressed ayodhya issue just to keep himself away from critisism. he failed in kandahar deal. all failure blame was dumped on advani.
country will not find leader like advani anymore. if advani had wished he would have occupied pm post but, he gave-up the post for vajpayee. it is in our indian blood to support always bad elements.

there was a time when parliamentarians had a tremendous sense of humor. mr. menon always called mr. feroz ghandhi(husband of late indira ghandhi and grand father to rahul and priyanka)nehru`s lap dog.mr. ghandhi knew about it.once a matter came up in parliament in which mr. menon was involved for his act of ommission and commission. on the day of discussion while mr.feroz ghandhi was about to take his seat in the parliament, he stopped for a few seconds in front of mr. menon. he bowed and smiled and said,``sir, in my speech i am about to do to you what a lap dog does to a lamp post`` such humorous and gentleman were the parliamentarians of yesteryears.

swati chaturvedi has to be congratulated for bringing out an x-ray film of bjp ,today is!the moral courage to aver the truth, a `typical chaturvedi spark,`has to be lauded.in the history of a nation and a party, there comes a time, when some one has to speak out the truth!young swati has done the job which a child in the fable did to bring home to the misguided king that he was ``naked``!her efforts would bear fruit only if leaders and workers in bjp read the lines and ponder over them.
her concluding remark about atalji, as the modern bhishma on his bed of arrows,is really superb.

its a good article especially for bjp men to introspect. the second generation leadership is totaly missing in this party. the vision seen by atalji is fedding out and before that happens these so called bjp stalwarts should dare to put up somebody like modi to take up the party and lead the nation. godhra riots is a past and just don`t paint modi black because of that. so many riots have happened when congress was in power in gujarat & elsewhere. how many of their leaders are punished?

don`t just fuss about godhra he is the right man with guts and administration ability. lets not forget we have to see our national interest and not individuasl or paty interest

the usual diatribe against bjp is in a predictable lines. nothing unusual in this blog which is typical p-secular journalist will be able to produce in a drop-of-hat.

we can also say that congress is missing the true leader the mahathma gandhi and people are fed up with all sundry fake khandhis!

i don`t care whether bjp misses atalji or atalji missing bjp et al..but bharath matha is looking for one ``true`` citizen who is pledging his support for his mother land.

dear atal ji was not that kind of leader as is assumed by millions of his supporters and fans. why shri govinda charya was expelled from bjp? a question of million dollors - yet to be answered. he was more careful about his image but not so careful about country. a im6 reports states that he is the man who is responsible for taking back support from baluchistan rebellion just after janta party rule in country. he inflicted unprecedent loss to country. kindly all the readers must saw through his role in connection with balochistan freedom struggle.(only one word for him ``american pawn``)

vajpayee was only a reason due to which bjp lost the way from politics, he remained busy in making his own image despite party ideology was drawn 180 degree with his action of his last 30 years of politics. in 1984, rajiv gandhi had said in parliament that vaypayee is right man in wrong party & his all blind followers had taken this in easteemed credentiala instead of abortion of party`s decision of making him a leader... !! at that time, one great columnist mr. chandra kant baxi had written - red alerting bjp - `` war & plotics mai apka senapati jub prati paksh ko achchha lagney lagey tau samajo ki usko badal ne ka samay aa chuka hai...!! `` - aur bjp didn`t listen this & today stood with 116 seat....!!! only govindacharya was a brave person who had hit him on the face in party meeting & still facing penelty on the name of party ideology....!! if vajpayee is going to be hero for bjp then i would prefer to vote for `` pure congress...`` ...!!

truly mr. bajpayee was down to earth, normal, educated and experienced leader on his tenure. he could sense the impact of any change easily and he always kept national interest ahead thats why keeping it on his mind he named party as ``bharatiya janata party``. though meaning of bjp has changed now..blame will go to their cheap and greedy party workers..they are not leaders anyway.
bajpayeeji had invested more than 50 years to seat in opposition but never tried to run cheap politics to come into power..instead he waited his turn and by his charisma only the bjp had won elections.
congress is a theif party after lal bahadur shastriji..every workers of congress are just trying to please soniaji..no one is a leader including manmohanji and company.
god bless india..don`t know who will come to save india from these uneducated, thief, greedy, opportunistic and senseless self declared leaders.

long live atalji..god bless you.

narendra modi is a pm material, congress is most scared of him and hence they have been working overtime to sabotage his political career and going to the extent of asking us to reject his visa as if he was a gangster. gujarat riots were genuine public anger of years of bottled up hindu frustration. 750 muslims and 250 hindus died in godhra riots. if the cm was behind it the casualty would have been 1/10 ratio instead of 1/3. bring modi as pm candidate and ask him to create new leadership, he has the political acumen to take on congress deceit. i feel pained to see bjp in such shambles they have let the patriotic indians down..

former prime minister of india mr atal behari vajpiee is a living legend , as he in exile and far away from active politics due to health is a leader who with his speech tried to pacify the parliament . a statesman , a poet , a lover of nature ,a true nationalist , a person to give direction for a developed india , his presence in the parliament is missing , his debates , his fiery speeches on various issues and above all his love for india and development in various sectors cannot be ruled out . a person of secular vision is a leader who had ruled india as prime minister for three times and remained leader of the opposition .

no doubt that atalji was great leader and related to masses well, no other leader could take his place and why only bjp but including all the parties. bjp still is the second larget party and there are other towering leaders too of whom congress is over conscious. the country should realize the gimmicks of cong party and vote for a true indian party.

bogus and very superficial.
vajpayee lived for his image and not for party. bjp was two under his leadership and it was but for advani`s effort ( conducting somnath yatra should physically taxing even at that age), bjp grew. it goes to advani`s credit that he chose to play second fiddle even when he had total support of bjp and rss and took evey effort to bridge the perception of bi-poler bjp.
vajpayee govt. let down the indian middle class and youth, which wanted india to stand up and take hard stands - be it kandhar, pakistan, handling of terrorism , aydhya, kashmir, his govt. was big let down. bjp is reaping the fruits of his failure. they can not even today answer why did they not solve those problems. why quatrocchi was not held during vajpayee`s time. his rule was very antithesis of wht bjp had stood for till then. any essrtion by advani was termed as rebellion aganist vajpayee. and the gentlement had to backtrack or his leader.
swati do well to read a bit more of public perception instaed of deriding public leaders as `` provincial leaders`` or a vet. it is bed taste and shows how superficial are u as a jouno.

very true, it`s not only the bjp but the whole country misses mr. vajpayee. he is one of very few charistmatic leaders the country had ever produced, who knew india with heart , soul and mind, untainted even after decades of public life, built up an organisation starting from self to a party in power, a philospher, poet and a philanthropist. the congress is in power for teh second time now not because of any positive vote on performance, but by default for the vaccuam created by mr. vajpayee exit from the scene. i only ruin that mr. vajpayee never got an absolute mandate to truly reflect his class and was more a prisoner of coalition politics then emerging in india.may god bless him with long life.
