To let or not to let

It once happened that we knew a property agent and Shabana contacted him for investing in a house. He was a nice chap and assured us we will get a house that my wife had liked. Days passed by and he started avoiding the topic and even meeting us. Later, the poor fellow who was embarrassed said in a sheepish tone that the house couldn’t be sold to a Muslim.

That same episode has now got repeated with Emraan Hashmi. It is certainly not in good taste but frankly speaking, I was not surprised. That the posh society denied him the house giving excuse of his on-screen image of a serial kisser is hogwash- no one will officially say ‘Muslims need not apply’.

Such things happen frequently in our cosmopolitan city of Mumbai. It is very sad that this is a widespread phenomena and I am aware of some more A-list celebrities who have had to bear it.

The good thing that Emraan did was speaking out about it- I believe that is the first step towards the solution of this issue that we often brush under the carpet of secularism, saying that it doesn’t exist.

Malice and evil of a society should be openly talked about. Especially in this case, as I know that most people of our country will not agree to such a practice. I have never had to go through any discrimination on the basis of my religion.

But because I have never, thankfully, been a victim of a road accident doesn’t mean that accidents do not occur. And it doesn’t mean we should not work to minimize the mishaps which kill seven people every day on the roads of the national capital- as the Delhi Police revealed the other day.

A house is one of the most cherished dreams of any individual. People of all faiths and culture and beliefs want a roof over their head and they do get it in all parts of the world. Where will the people of other faiths live after all? Not on the footpath if they can afford better things!

Denying a house to a Muslim or to a Christian or a Hindu etc is a stupid communal practice. It is so illogical. Whether a celeb is at its receiving end or not does not matter. In this country- where the Constitution says all are equal- such unjustifiable acts are totally unacceptable.

We, as responsible citizens of a secular nation, should put up a fight against such practices and root them out. Such things should be made a stigma and the persons engaging in it should be isolated.

Housing societies in Mumbai- and elsewhere I am sure- have some weird rules for their residents. There are many societies which put conditions like the residents should be vegetarian. I will tell you a secret- I have been to these societies and have relished the mutton offered by my friends there.

In short, this practice also betrays the basic truth that we are a composite society made of many tastes.

The best example of this assimilation of all cultures, beliefs, lifestyles etc is the industry which has given me everything- the film industry. Within this industry, there is absolutely no discrimination based on any thing under the sun.

People often wonder how this is possible. I will tell you how- it is a result of our search for excellence.

Bollywood has acquired its secular image because it believes in doing good work, in satisfying audiences across all strata of the society and that is of prime importance. We can’t afford to discriminate, you see.

A director, or a producer, or an actor or a writer like me has just one objective in mind- our films, our songs, our promos etc should do really well. Thus, when we work, the only criterion in our mind is skillfulness of a person. We work happily with anyone who has talent.

I know that our country loves our films and swears by them. What I would like our people to really learn from Bollywood- apart from how to dress up well or how to dance or how to woo a girl etc- is the spirit of unity for a purpose which is far above petty perceptions.

Once the people of India have only one objective in mind i.e. making India a superpower, there will not be any space for those who have guts to deny a house for Mr. Hashmi.

dear javed saheb with all respect to you it is worth mentioning here that if actually a house is denied to mr hashmi it is definitely not good how ever it is more important to ponder why it happened or happens where u need to focus your energy is to change the thinking process of muslimsand educate them what i felt and foun muslims do not want to mingle with people from other religion to quote one incident i being hindu lived in a secular society and wanted to learn about quran so one day went to purchase it the shop owner one maulavi type looking person asked about me and knowing me i am hindu he asked me to go and wash your penis ,hand and remove your shoes as i could not do these things in public i was denied a copy of holy book. similarily it is percieved that in any society muslims occupy houses the crime rate goes up also they do not allow thier ladies to come out of purdah but do not hesitate to ogle at other ladies of other religion also if some other relegion person wants to marry a muslim person then one has to convert one self to islam not vice versa. these are a few reasons for this kind of incidents people like you need to use your energy for reforming muslim community in stead of righting this kind of blogs which give biased feeling you are one of the jewels of indian cinema and society pease ful fill the aspirations of many what they are expecting from you

Javed, as a Muslim, come stay in Malaysia if you want. You will have no problem here because discrimination applies only if a you a Hindu. Muslims have double standards in India while ignoring what happens to other minorities in Muslim countries. So you and Imraan should not complain so much as living in Hindu India for personalities ilike yourself is definitely much better.

Hashmi was not given because the society did not like his presence in the society, all fair the society has the right to live peacefully, now that the society does not like hashnmi he should keep away and not become unwanted guest if he is a honourable person,so far his actions point otherwise

Dear Javed Sir why you speak only when problem is related to muslims.I know many places dominated by muslims where hindu or sikh can`t live. Why to talk about only house. Let`s take a example of Jammu and Kashmir where Hindus are being driven out according to pre-planning.Why don`t you talk about that ? It is very sad that educated muslims speaks only when the problem is related to muslims.

It`s very difficult to know, unless and until CBI probe into the allegations leveled by Emran Hashmi, that what exactly transpired between Hashmi and the property dealer.

javed`s friends are liers if they serve meat to him in societies where it is not allowed. They lied to buy. Does it not amount to denial of basic rights for people who are vegetarians. I do not agree with Javed that it is a silly rule. Or does he think rules should not apply to muslims? Societies wants to live peaceably within their framework Anyone thar can potentially disturb it will not be welcome. Incidentally I am not avegetarian but I would not want to trample on others rights as casually as Javed seeks to do under the garb of secularism.

I fully agree with Javed Sahib that ignorance is not the solution to the problems. What happened to hashmi is certainly not acceptable in our Fedral India. We should condemned such action done by any section of society whether muslim Hindu or any one. The point raised by other viewer can not justify wrong action of Mumbai society. We should raise the issue and try to isolate all such person from future generation. The action of both muslim in Hadrabad and Hindu of Mumbai are condemnable. Thanks to Javed sahib for raising this issue.

What is actually mentioned by the great poet is a bitter truth of our society, but why only is he penning his concern for Emraan Hashmi, I being a Hindu have faced these discreminations at a Muslim locality and by a Christian landlord. I used to stay in Hyderabad in a muslim dominated locality, every now and then a group of around 15-20 people used to abuse me and used to threaten me if I would not give them some money for there booze. Most of the time I used to get late for home because of my job commitments. These people would stop me and ask for some money for there booze. One day I felt so bad for being victimised in my own country and for being a Hindu. That day I was returning home with one of my company`s driver these people again started abusing me. One of them stood in front of me and hold me by my collar as I did not give heed to there demand of Rs.100. My driver ran away of fear, even I got scared as I did not want any tussle at 12:30 midninght. But I could not resist and gave a full blow punch on his face and he started bleeding profously. Other came but I dared them to show there guts 50km away from there homes. Next day my landlord told me to vacate, so I did vacate. My fault was that I objected to something which was not done in any civil society, it was not done for any freedom loving person. The ordeal did not stop here, I shifted to a Christian landlord. After staying there for one week I was invited over dinner by my landlord. I got to know the gentleman was a priest at some church and used to hold healing sessions on Sunday for poor masses. I was under impression that the church priest is like the one shown in Hindi movies. Well the ordeal began now, the menu at the dinner consisted a beef dish, I refused to eat any beef related or beef product, this priest started arguing about the Hindu mythology. I said to myself not again, I am here to fill my hungry stomach not to listen or give lecture on religion. He went harsh and started abusing Hindu gods and giving arguments. His logic to eat beef meat was simple, beyond certain age the animal grow old and the main purpose to keep them is for there milk. While they are old they only consume fodder and need attention. So rather feeding them unnecessarily why not to slaughter them as they would give feed to some hungry stomach. Till this time I was keeping quite and listening his argument, argument of a man who is demmy god for some (as he heals according to them). But I could not control my emotions by putting a simple question to him. I asked how old are your parents, he said around 70 years. I said does your father gets pension or your mother does the household stuff, like cooking, washing etc. He said no, no not atall I have maid to do this. I paused Hmmm, looking into his eyes I asked a simple question but hardhitting one, Brother will you ever think of slaughtering them just to produce some meat for as you said hungry stomach. I got up and next day vacated the house. So sir purpose to tell you this story is we cannot change the way others think. The change will come only when people like you stop thinking positively. After all that I have Muslim and Christian friends. Stop raising issues like discrimination, Emraan Hashmi can get another house, its not the last house to be purchased in Mumbai.

dear javedbhai, i hold you with high regards in my mind. i remember one TV program that i watched and found you to clearly identify what minority appeasing is. while denying a house to a muslim (just because he happens to be one) like it reportedly happened to emraan is not a practice befitting a secular society, kindly note that such things do happen to hindus, sikhs and christians. i lived earlier in a muslim dominated locality and the third buiding from my house was a mosque. i know that the muslims there generally did not like that locality to be inhabited by people of other faith. in a way, if we start scrutinizing each and everyhting, we will note that people belonging to every single caste/religious denomination are facing some kind of injustice or the other. it is not just the muslims. but life goes on and it is our collective responsibility to see to it that this nation becomes turly secular one day. i think the first step towards this is to stop looking at incidents like this from a communal angle by repetedly saying from the roof top that muslims are denied housing. let us fight it by saying that people should not be discriminated based on their caste/religion. let us work collectively towards this without being communal. as you know, people who fight monsters should not end up becoming monsters. meanwhile, please note that charity begins at home and when the prime minister of the country itself makes statements like people of some particular community have the first rights on the nations resources, does that give the right signal to others to be secular? instead doesn`t it give credibility to the voices of the opposing communal forces?

Emran Hashmi never applied for the flat as alleged by the society office bearers. It is clear that he is hogging for negative publicity and trying to create bitterness in the society. He has the reputation of being a serial kisser as he flaunted on his shirt so it is the right of every person to save his family from someone whom he considers to be a threat to order in the locality. The fact is that Muslims also discriminate but Hindus do not protest for fear of being dubbed as communal. The atrocities committed on Hindus are far more than the denail of a flat.
