And the Oscar for the Most Originally Plagiarised Film goes to... ‘Barfi!’

a
‘Barfi!’. An exceedingly positive film. Granted. Spectacular performances by the cast. Accepted. Foot-tapping, soul-stirring numbers. Impressive. Plagiarised content. Silence.

Anurag Basu’s recently-released film, ‘Barfi!’, has swept many off their feet with the flawless acting of its leads and the straightforward innocence of its storyline. This 2012 release, shot in the beautiful, picturesque mountains of the Darjeeling district of West Bengal and the foothills of the Himalayas in that part of the country sure calls for heaps of praise. The spirit and the essence of the northern part of Bengal have been done a considerable amount of justice to. There are hardly any doubts about that. But what has struck the most is that heinous crime called plagiarism.

As recently as a week back, ‘Barfi!’ was selected to compete under the Foreign Film Category at the Oscars next year. The move, decided by a jury comprising of 22 members, was one that gave rise to a plethora of
emotions in people. While many welcomed the decision, several others – who were perhaps aware of the repercussions of that decision – were aghast at the choice. The film, after all, will be one that is to represent the country and its 100-year-old film industry in the international market. And to send a film that is dodging the many poison-darts of charges of plagiarism is sure sending waves of dissent across various quarters.

Not finding the incessant pot shots of criticism waning any bit, the director resorted to the defence mechanism best suited for such a situation – he called his work “inspired” from other, more famous works, travelling to the extent of saying that his ‘Barfi!’ is actually a tribute to Charlie Chaplin. This “inspiration”, for the sake of information, is the 1917 Charlie Chaplin classic ‘The Adventurer’. Anurag Basu steers nowhere near the other obvious, copied scenes. The Rowan Atkinson-starrer movie, ‘Mr. Bean’s Holiday’, too, is one that has magically “inspired” ‘Barfi!’, but without finding any mention in the director’s self-defence. The 2004 film ‘The Notebook’, is another case in point. The filmmaker, however, doesn’t mention that as an inspiration. Sigh.

Anurag Basu, despite tall claims of being ‘original’ and defending himself against charges of plagiarism branding it as “inspiration”, needs to wake up. And so do many others. They need to either stop blatantly picking up other people’s works and calling them their own, or come to terms with that deafening word called ‘plagiarism’. Period.

‘Barfi!’ has been praised to the heavens by people for the sheer brilliance of the story and the unblemished performance of its cast. The film dispels many of the preconceived notions about physically challenged people as being pitiable or worth sympathy in any manner whatsoever, and it could really have carved a niche for itself in the echelons of world film history – perhaps if Anurag Basu would have paid a little more attention to the details. In his bildungsroman of a deaf and mute matwala Murphy/Barfi and an autistic Jhilmil, Basu falls prey to the exact same notion that he sets out to wipe away – one of assumption.

The director, in some insentient whim, might have assumed that his audience – or the ‘commoners’, as Shakespeare would have called them – are not as ‘film-educated’ as he is. Hence, he commits this grave mistake of copying scenes – in entirety – literally, picking them up and placing them in ‘Barfi!’ without paying any heed whatsoever to what the act would entail.

Cut to the jury members. They were heard defending their choice by saying that ‘Barfi!’ was the best of the lot sent to them for their approval. The ‘lot’, incidentally, includes films like ‘Kahaani’, ‘Paan Singh Tomar’, ‘Gangs of Wasseypur I-II’, ‘The Dirty Picture’, ‘Gattu’ and the like. Obviously, the much learned and film-experienced jury had nothing to choose from the ‘lot’.

The fact that such a beautiful film as ‘Barfi!’ is one that is so deeply embedded in plagiarism was devastating enough. And then nominating it for the Oscars increases that manifold. India has produced many other, entirely ‘original’ pieces of work this year too. The question that would undoubtedly appear on every sensible person’s mind is the validity of the decision to send ‘Barfi!’ to the Oscars. The category we are competing for there at that platform is not of the Most Originally Plagiarised Film. That is another realm altogether; as of now, not felicitated at the Oscars.

The movie is entertaining however it's disgusting and shameful to even think that a plagarised movie is being sent from a country with a population of 1.2 billion.
Shame on the jury who will make Indians a laughing stock in front of the world
Shame on Anurag Basu who has made all of us feel that we represent a plagarised movie producing nation.
Well I guess he thought that nobody will realize this horrific copying, it's like cat closing its eyes and drinking milk thinking if he closes his eyes nobody will see.

Anurag Basu is a GENIUS! A genius in the ‘Copy & Paste’ technique, that is. Really, hats off to the guy for:
1. Cutting and pasting so well that it passes off a a ‘great’ movie.

2. Doing so much research- he would have had to sit through so many films – can you imagine how much hard work he has put in to select the right scenes from more than 10 films so that when joined together, they form a smooth and slick film?

3. Using disability in a crude and ‘nautanki’ manner so that the audience is hooked and the box office tills keep ringing

4. Hiding behind ‘inspiration’and ‘homage’ to disguise blatant plagiarism

5. His music director also being ‘inspired’ coincidentally

6. Managing to fool 1.2 billion people, at least temporarily, into beleiving they were watching a masterpiece (some are getting quite militant in the comments below – bless)

7. Duping the good souls who form the Oscar Selection Committee into choosing Barfi over truly great films like Paan Singh Tomar and Gangs of Wasseypur.

ANURAG BASU deserves the BHARAT RATNA !!!

Well I strongly feel that either Gangs of Wasseypur or PST should have been sent to Oscars. They were the best choice and original to the core. Gangs of Wasseypur had got standing ovation in Cannes Film Festival, where its both parts were shown at one go for 5 hours or so and all seats remained full till the end. The movie had recieved superb review from Hollywood reporter. Given these, GoW had good chance to win the oscars for Nation. But since that movie opened the truth about political families in India, how mafia runs and rules...the hypocrite selection panel must have dropped the movie. The same was with Paan Singh Tomar, a movie which started with dialogue like " Daku hum nahi, humko Bagi bulao..Daku to Sansad me baithe hain"! and " Jab desh ke liye daura to koi nahi poocha, aur jab aaj Daku ban gaye to interview lene aa rahe hain".
Shame of the selection jury.

Bollywood is hardly original. This plagiarism started since 1980s, right from the script, music and songs. Bollywood is the ugly sister of Hollywood, fact.

The author is as beautiful as the ugly and copied BARFII, which has been nominated for OSCAR.
Ms.Ananya is aesthetically praiseworthy for her writing and for her cute smile in the photograph.

I completely agree with the thesis of this well written review. What is most disturbing is that this plagiarizing tendency can be seen in almost 80% of our Bollywood films. The phenomenon is so widespread that it has gained acceptance of most movie viewing public including the supposed cinema connoisseurs!

it's a shame that originality hasn't triumphed over brands. there are lesser / smaller film makers who deserve the limelight. at this rate we will never have another satyajit ray - only karan johars, ektha kapoors, and other masala mixers.

Ms. Ananya i think u have not seem Notebook, pls see that once and then u'll find how original Barfi is, i wish u won't find it a original idea first of all, this year we had movies like Paan singh Tomar, Vicky Donor and Gangs of wasseypur which were above the understing of jury who nominated Barfi for oscars. Paan singh tomar was the most deserving choice but we now can't do nothing moreover commenting this topic.

Wah Ananya Wah! Kya article hai! Anurag kee to dhajeean uda dee! Well spoken about the lack of artistic sensibility in the film jury as well! What can one expect from a jury belonging to and fed on the "entertainment for the masses" industry of Mumbai?

Finally, somebody had the courage to point out that the highly acclaimed film is not so original after all!! Barfi is a repackaged film and to send it to Oscars as our Indian entry... ??? While the film has some entertainment value with good performances, it must be left at that. It is a truly sad and ludicrous decision to send it for the Oscars as the film is unoriginal and unethical. It is one thing to be inspired, and to pay tributes. It's an other another thing to re-enact sequences in the name of paying tribute.
