‘Bandh’ can’t open doors

Sushi's musings
a
If convention were to be followed, then after a lazy weekend, we should all have been beating our Monday blues and rushing to office. But it turned out to be an extended weekend for many across the nation due to ‘Bharat Bandh’ called by the entire opposition against spiraling prices of fuel and essential commodities. The ‘bandh’ was called to express the ire of the common man against the government. But it all went in vain as the common man became the biggest victim of this ‘bandh’.

All through the day, the ‘bandh’ disrupted normal life causing huge problems to everyone. The office-goers couldn’t commute, as roads were blocked by the demonstrators. They had to literally fight their way to office. The poor daily wagers lost on their day’s income. At places the ‘bandh’ turned violent as demonstrators forced people to shut shops and even tried to set vehicles on fire. The common man, instead of feeling that someone was fighting for their cause, was in reality too frightened
to step out.

Yes, it is the responsibility of an active opposition to take up issues in the interest of the common man. But is this the right way to go about it? Is it right to hurt your own economy, to destroy your own public property and strike fear and discomfort in the hearts of the common man?

In New Delhi, several roads were blocked causing huge traffic snarls; even the Metro services were disrupted with politicians entering the Metro trains and attempting to stall them. In Mumbai, the local trains, the auto and taxis were halted. The city of Kolkata simply came to a standstill. Same was the case in many other cities of India. The common man was simply helpless. The passengers at railway stations and the airports were worst hit as they were stranded for hours. There was hardly any co-ordination between the political parties with BJP-led NDA and the Left parties calling for two different ‘bandhs’ on the same day.

Political parties didn’t even bother to think about the loss incurred by the nation during the ‘bandh’. The nation lost approximately Rs 10,000-13000 crores in that single day. One obviously wonders whether these politicians had the country’s interests in mind or their own! Who benefited from the ‘bandh’? At the end of the day, the ‘bandh’ was a total failure as the Central government did not budge from its stand of no roll back.

I feel the culture of ‘bandhs’ is really just a nuisance and does more harm than good. Sometime back, when I visited Assam, I was told that they have ‘bandhs’ every now and then by various parties and even terrorist organizations. I was surprised that the people had not celebrated events like Independence Day and Republic Day for years in Assam as terrorist outfits always call for a ‘bandh’ on these days. People just stay at home for fear of terror attacks. It’s such a pity.

The irony of the situation is that the Left government in West Bengal was most pro-active during Bharat bandh, even though it is the one which imposes the highest state cess on petro products. In fact, regions which have Left influence like West Bengal and Kerala are affected by frequent ‘bandhs’. How can a nation ever make progress in such a scenario? A ‘bandh’ is now more like off day. It serves no other purpose.

Is strike the only way to demand something? Can’t politicians find a better solution without resorting to ‘bandhs’? Nowadays, even peaceful protests turn violent in no time. Politicians and their goons start destroying public property. People even get beaten up for not complying. So the common man feels the way to be safe is to stay indoors and not get involved in any way.

We have to understand that ‘bandhs’ are against national interest and cause immense inconvenience. If everyone resorts to ‘bandhs’ as a tool to protest and press every demand, then soon the nation will only shut its doors to progress and prosperity.

i fully agree with the views expressed by ms dutta.politicians should forget bandhs as these cause collossal loss & miseries to common people & lot of fun to the politicians & their goons.it is hightime that there should be a huge outcry by the masses against this dirty tool which is used more against the public than for the public.there can be silent & peaveful protests & marches.it should be remembered that bandhs have been declared illegal by higher courts.

i am really shocked to see that media be it tv or newspaper are just rasining high cost of vegetables and foodgrains including dal but no body is asking govt milk dairies be it amul or mother dairy why in monsoon they are raising prices of milk , this is the 4-5 th rise of milk price . this has never happened ever. atleast prices of tomotto or sugar or veg will come down from 60 to 30 or even to 10 but price of govt controled items like milk, petrol, gas, bus fares will not come down.
then what reliance retail fresh, more, big bazar are doing, they are supposed to purchase direct from farmers and sell at reasonable prices the veg/dal etc but their prices are almost equal to ordinary retailer. even some items are costlier than these retailers like mangoes selling @ 35 in open market , at reliance it is selling at @45 and quality more worse than open market.
i request media to visit these organised retail stors and find out truth and also highligh the real culprit of inflation is govt itself.

we all know bundh does not produce anything but our political establishments (practiced by 60 years) use this tool to show their strength.

public is largely responsible for neglecting problems surrounding them but expect politicians to solve it with silver bullet.

when roads having pot-holes, when there is no drinking water, when there is no electricity at home, when traffic is stopped for our vvips, when corrupt minister is having free run, when criminals are running the show, we as a public hardly show any resistence. when public take the arm up in their hands, political parties which have corrupted this country for the past 60 years (ruling congress takes 90% of the blame) will take back-seat.

i may have agree with writer view in normal conditons, but this time i fully supported this bandh. let her what shall poeple and oppositon do to highlight the poor people. the plea that 13000 crore loss to the nation, then why we have so many holidays beside saturday and sunday rest days. if she is so worried for 13000 crore loss to the nation (first i will ask how she calculated this figure), then by reducing 20 holidays and making saturdays as working days we can save lacs of crore of rupees, then why we spend thousand of crore of rupees on democrcy, bandh is a tool of democracy. yes violence and destroying public property is not good but when govt is not listening and every day price of one or the other item is increassed by govt itself , leave the private dealer, then something like band become necessary and she shall know that bandh and strike are people tools in democracy to get their voice heard to deaf govt.

the writer has well brought out the difficulties faced by the common man and damage to the national property worth thounands of crores of rupees during this `bandh`.they call `bandh`a success if they are able to do huge damage to the public property and inflict heavy injury to the public/common mas`s interest.organisers of the `bandh`measure the success of the `bandh`by counting how many men were stranded at railway station/air ports, how many bread earners could not earn their daily wages, how many patients could not reach the hospital and so on.is it in interest of the common man?common man`s interest must protected keeping in view the international conditions.we must know our rights and at the same time our obligations and duties as well.it high time we should devise some alternative to these destructive `bandhs`

bandhs and rath yatras should be banned. these are being used to create chaos and loss of revenue both ultimately hurt common man. there is no place for bandhs in a civilized society. yes people have right to express their disappointment, and concerns, but there should a better way of registering protest. ploiticians and goons exploit these cheap ploys of bandhs and yatras.

what is the alternative? i think a better use of media by opposition and the ruling parties could be given a try. media is powerful and reaches far and wide. let there be debates, include leaders, academics, bankers, and similar ones who have vision and national interest in their minds and check issues and derive some solutions. anything constructive or result oriented can be a better alternative than bandh or harthal. what ever happens in the names of these democratic expressions need to stop if the intended beneficiaries are the common man(aam aadmi that is..!)

i am totally against any bandhs which get violent. no one has any right to destroy public property which they themselves don`t use at all (things like buses etc). the losses incurred by such bandhs are huge but is there any alternative way to protest. peaceful ways like a silent protest march or wearing blank arm bands are not going to solve any purpose in a country like india. infact, the people of india should have fully supported this measure of the opposition parties and voluntarily refrained from going to work unless extremely important.

the people of india have done a blunder in giving second term to sonia manmohan combine. they know they can now get away with anything.people of india at large have been cheated /taken for a ride with price hike. any means including a bandh is justified if it helps in stopping the autocratic rule of cong.

what else should a common man do after he has exhausted all his efforts - like -
-trying to voice - but media likes trp`s which he cannot give.
-politician`s lend their ear closer to election only
-pm will not give him appointment although he is elected by him .
- his area politician only cares to meet before the elections otherwise he is very busy `making money for himself`.
- check the ascest of the politicians & his family menbers before the election and if he wins after his term .
thus strike is the mode left for him
