...because we don’t give a damn!

Common Man
a
19 years of trial and just six months of punishment to the guilty. And as if this was not enough to shake the conscience of the nation, the guilty, a former top cop of Haryana police, remains defiant and far from the clutches of our system.

Yes, I am talking about the Ruchika Girhotra molestation case.

The case is not an exception in our country; after all we have already seen too many such cases. Remember, Nitish Katara murder case, Jessica Lall murder case etc, the list is endless.

We have seen the high and mighty walking scot-free in all these cases. Remember a drunk Manu Sharma caught in a bar on the pretext of attending his ailing mother?

But what made this case stand out was the shameless manner in which our whole system conspired to shield a teenager’s molester and in turn tormenting a budding tennis player and her family to an extent that she committed suicide.

When I sit back and try to find out the person res
ponsible for the tumultuous life and tragic death of Ruchika, I fail to put the onus on one person.

No, the DGP SPS Rathore was not alone responsible for her death. He was the molester, or should I say the ‘monster’, but he was just the partial reason. If the system had worked properly and he was put behind bars, Ruchika wouldn’t have died.

So, I moved on to next potential culprit, the system. Was the system responsible for Ruchika’s death? I don’t think so. After all, it is the same system that is now taking the matter to highest level and ensuring that the guilty is severely punished.

Then who is the ultimate culprit?

After much deliberation, I am ashamed to admit, but we, the people of this great country are responsible for her death.

Yes, we should be held guilty for abetting the suicide of Ruchika. It is our passive attitude that creates a ‘Ruchika’ and shields a ‘Rathore’.

These things happen in our society because we don’t give a damn.

Terrorists come on our soil and kill us in heaps. We take out candle march, sign petitions, sing the national anthem, and go back to ours homes and sleep because after a certain extent we don’t give a damn.

A dishonest politician gobbles hundreds of crores of public money, still we vote for him because he belongs to our caste or religion. By the way, Shibhu Soren has just been sworn-in as the Jharkhand CM. Public money is not ‘our money’, we don’t give a damn!

We tear the seats of our buses and trains. After all, they are public modes of transport, not our private vehicle. We don’t give a damn.

We have no problems if riots are taking place in Gujarat, in Mumbai, in Uttar Pradesh, after all, our house is safe. Why should we give a damn?

If India loses to Pakistan in a cricket match, we see it as a matter of national shame, but we don’t give a damn if a woman is paraded naked on the busy roads of Patna or the remote village of Andhra Pradesh.

We don’t care if a fellow Indian is being beaten and manhandled just because he belongs to Bihar. We don’t give a damn, because it is not our state.

We are ready to burn buses, ransack shops and damage public property because some politicians have told us that smaller states, read Telangana, will guarantee better development of the region. We don’t give a damn to the policy of ‘unity is strength’.

We will continue to brand Muslims as terrorists without thinking that the total population of Muslims in our country is close to 138 million, and no country can survive with such a large number of ‘terrorists’ residing in it. But, to hell with statistics and hell with the fact that all communities have black sheep, we don’t give a damn.

So don’t pity Ruchika Girhotra. She was just another victim of the dead Indian conscience. There are many more to come.

I know half of the readers will post a comment after getting emotional on reading it because that’s the easiest thing to do.

And rest half will shrug me off as another freakish writer.

But let me tell you all, I will continue to raise my voice because my conscience is still alive. And even though you don’t give a damn, I do!

Why do you ignore Aamir Khan? He is the one who started 100 crore club and is only one with 200 crore film also! SRK trailed behind and joined 100 crore club even after Ajay Devgan!

Aamir Khan is no less a favorite of masses and he is the only actor who is trusted by audience. His 100 crore films had different genres. Others had to rely on action or masala, same films to give 100 crore film.

Aamir is perfect combination of stardom and talent.

Once you apply this logic of mindless cinema only reaching the 100 crore mark to Aamir's movies you will realize that the logic falls flat. And that is why Aamir is not referred to in this artile.

human greed is an old issue./our egos and greed never allows us to be decent.we want every thing more.....and this more is the problem...be it power, wealth, attention or for that matter dominance.till such time the greed persists, crime too will thrive then be it ``molestation`` or ``bullying`` of any kind.disease is incurable and some people will always be the tormentors as in past 2000 years and may be before too.

sharique n siddiquie - terrorism is as much about bringing physical harm as it is about attacking psychologically. learn the difference.

point me to a single person who says that all muslims are terrorists. i don`t think you will find even one person saying that. on the other hand, there are several so called leaders who poison the mind of innocent muslim youth by giving them the shelter of a victim mentality.

and you need to answer to yourself what role do you play.

This blog raises an issue but alas does not provide a solution! When you say that the common people do not give a damn.... what do you want them to do? Gimme a solution and not just lose talks!

Secondly, if some of us were involved enough to join a peace march for some cause... you again term it as a sheepish act!

Then wat do you want the common man to do? Jump in front of Manmohan Singh`s car or throw a shoe a Pratibha Patil or kill Soren so that he may not be able to grab that chair again????

Wat solution according to you do common masses have?

It is said that we must vote because that is the way we can exercise our right and add on to get the right person in power... but if all the contesting candidates are bastards then what should a common man do???

Its not that the conscience of the common man has died. Till date when a parent watches news regarding Jessica or Ruchika, he tells his daughter be on guard but what else can he do????

Please lemme know and i will surely contribute my part to it!

Ruchikas case is neither unique nor new in India. Till Indians get rid of apathy and indifference to everything including human rights, nothing will change. I still remember as a young person living in India there wa a famous case of 2 youngsters hitchhiking and being raped and killed by a serial killer. There was the same outrage, people upset etc etc. however after more than 25 years I havent seen any change. How can a wife be allowed to defend a husband in a criminal case when a wife is not even considred as a credible witness in rest of the educated world is beyond my imagination. Yet the man gets a bail despite even the law minister makes lots of noise. Hindi movies may be right. Only vigilanty behaviour seem to work in India where even basic law does not work. This in a country where people keep saying that they will become super power. A super power upholds democratic rights and human rights. even when US failed to follow this dictum during george bush era, US lost its super power status. So Indians dont kid yourself, India can never be a super power of any sort when law and order do not have any power. The police and judiciary are not fit to be called as such. Arise, awake stop not till justice is served in India.

An excellent and insightful article. The author is absolutely right when he says ``Yes, we should be held guilty for abetting the suicide of Ruchika. It is our passive attitude that creates a ‘Ruchika’ and shields a ‘Rathore’.

These things happen in our society because we don’t give a damn``.

How true! But the truth always hurts so some people will try to criticise him.

The fact is in India the vast majority 99.5 of the people are SHAMELESS<, SELF SERVING HYPOCRITES, so the Ruchika case although tragic is neither the first or last of such cases!

The article is well written. The only solution to get out of the slumber is for more younger people to get into political system &amp there should be minimum educational qualification for all positions of politilians so that they can think balanced.
For the time being the judge who delivered a 6 month sentence should be put behind barsalong with the policeman in cgarge of the case.

Riots in Gujrat!!which riots?Ohh you are still living in history.Islamic terrorism is a relaity and not all muslims in india support it and thats absolutely true but a large chunk of them do support it.are you giving us a warning that no country can survive with 170 million odd muslim terrorists?Let me make you very clear,India is safe and in peace not because of 170 million muslims, but because Hindus are in majority. If muslim will evrr come even near to majority, there will be a taliban, civil war,no democracy,no secularism and fight to impose shariyat law.

YOUR ARTICLE IS RIGHT TO A CERTAIN EXTENT. BUT WHY DRAG THE TERRORISM ASPECT WHEN U WRITE ABOUT RUCHIKA. IT SEEMS U R UNABLE TO RESIST DRAGGING THIS TERRORISM ASPECT . FIRST OF ALL U UNDERSTAND NOBODY BRANDS THE WHOLE MUSLIMS AS TERRORISTS. UNFORTUNATELY ALL TERORISTS ARE MUSLIMS. THIS IS SOMETHING YOU HAVE TO THINK &amp ANALYSE WHY IT IS SO. NO ONE HAS AN ANSWER FOR THIS ROT . WHY IT IS A PERSON FROM ONE RELIGION COMING FROM VARIOUS DIVERSE COUNTRIES &amp CONTINENTS SHOULD BE READY TO SACRIFISE HIS LIFE . CITIZENS FROM EGYPT,NIGERIA,CHAD,SUDAN,INDONESIA,INDIA,PAKISTAN,YEMEN,BRITAIN,CHINA,.OH THE LIST IS ENDLESS. CAN U FIND OUT?

Well, ultimately it`s because of the media the case got attention of the nation...see most of us busy earning bread and butter and are afraid of losing their jobs...........whenever the criminal is not a common street pickpocket whom you can eagerly beat up but a politician or a police or a high govt. employee. Even say a Govt. Clerk in WB have a lot of power to misuse and almost zero accountability because union backing. IWe don`t even know the existence of PUBLIC GRIEVANCE CELL or hardly go to `em.
Only solution is Explempary Punishment and Enforcement of Law. ..Hang Rathore high and a thousand future Rathores will think twice before committing crimes in Future.

Most of which I don`t care, but the author shows utter lack of knowledge on telangana issue.

Instead of cribbing about the system, get out of you comfort home, and do some thing.

Mr Right is Might, Mysore. Internet is old enough and I exprect most fo the netizens to understand that wirting in upper CAPS that is CAPITAL LETTERS amounts to shouting. It is a lot more difficult to read in UPPER CAPS than `lower caps`.
I know you want attention to your views but let`s not forget the Net manners.

More than The Beast Rathore the Judge has done injustice by giving 6 months + 1000/- for Molestation. It is Shame on part of the Judiciary to have such Judge sabs. 19 years long trial shows inefficiency of the System and CJI downwards are part of it and they need to get ashamed .CJI, PM are all talking in Seminars about quality justice whereas these people are not efficient and work for Quality output. They ,permit me to say Blaber something for the need of the platform. What prevented CJIs after CJIs to express their unhappiness for appointment of Judges ? Have they ever went to president and took up the matter. We need to import best administration from UK/ US which are fast and these Judges should work as apprentice under them and Learn. As far as common man is concerned there is nothing to be ashamed of outsourcing . the fact that these people are working inefficient is to be ashamed and we can not feel proud of them.

It`s high time now that we wake up and fight against the terrible things going on around us or else the day is not far away when we will be the victims of this corrupt system and will not find anyone to help.

Everytime we cannot wash our hands by saying its not our job, but has to find a way so as to make people responsible for their jobs.

Agreeing to one of the earlier posts. The author seems to be just a newbie writer cribbing about system and thinks he has done his bit by raising voice and reminding the forgetful janta of the past cases and this one particularly highlighted issue.
There are other places to put your fancy photos dude.

i really liked your writing and was happy to see that people who think like this still exist in india. however, i cannot agree with one point. `we continue to brand muslims as terrorists`. who are the `we` in this? if it is the non-muslims in india, then imagine what would have been the plight of the 138 million muslim population in india. please do look at the statistics. `we` have allowed `terrorists` to lead the indian http://www.zeenews.com/image/spacer.gifcricket team, `we` have allowed a `terrorist` to be the leader of our nuclear weapons and missile program, `we` watch movies in which these `terrorists` perform and appreciate them too, `we` don`t have any objection to a `terrorist` becoming the president of india...etc.

A very well written article. You are spot on. I think majority of the Indians, bar a few, are selfish. They only think of themselves. As the new generation, we have the responsibiity to ensure we dont become what we are complanng about. Only we can bring this change.

I love India.

It`s a good write-up, however I feel you shouldn`t have clubbed Telangana with other issues... If you don`t know about telangana please atleast don`t talk about it.

In 1956, Telangana state was forcefully merged with Andhra state against the will of telanganites. It clearly shows that demand for telangana is not for creation of new state, rather its reversal of alliance between two states that didn`t work well.
(Telangana used to exist prior to 1956, unlike other regions which are demanding creation of NEW states)

you said ``Unity is Strength``....I strongly believe it, and we gave 60 years to Andhra people, intellectuals, leaders & politicians to showcase the Unity and prove the above slogan, but for past 60 years, the people of telangana were betrayed...there are tons of instances, where I can prove the discrimination meted out to Telangana people. Its enough boss...pl. stop giving lectures like common man....put some considerable amount of thought before you write anything about TELANGANA.

Atleast ask yourself a very basic question, why perople are fighting for a separate state...and to correct you, the TELANGANA agitation is not started by one person...it`s spearheaded by entire region (with 4 crore population)

WE have a twisted attitude to life, We do not respect others as we do not respect ourselves. By our standards there is no moral standard, we do not hold us responsible for our failings and do our best to avoid getting caught. We are determined to buy the escape route at all cost. All the molestation, money laundering and trade in human flesh are OK as we can buy our way out with MONEY. Corruption is our ``takle kalam``. Jai Hind?
