For once I support Shiv Sena!

Aberration
a
For once I support the Shiv Sena… despite the fact that I have never liked the ideologies of the political party, and always believed them to be a dim-witted extremist group, which thought they owned Maharashtra… despite the fact that their ‘Marathi Manoos’ slogans always got on my nerves and all I wished to do was too was to give them a good piece of my mind regarding how India is one and they too are Indians before being Marathis…

There are many reasons for me to disagree with that particular political party… but this time, I actually support their campaign! Because, for once, they seem to be right!

Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray, a couple of days ago, wrote in his party’s mouthpiece ‘Saamna’ that he and his party co-workers will not allow the Australians to enter Maharashtra in order make one point clear and straight: attack on Indians in Australia is not acceptable; a point that people sitting in North Block clearly seem to have missed.

“Our b
oys are being stabbed, burnt and shot at in that country and still our cricketers have no qualms in playing with them. Do they have any national pride?” Thackeray wrote.

True to the core…. Citing an incident again mentioned by Thackeray, when a great actor like Amitabh Bachchan could deny the award offered to him by the Queensland University, so as to protest the racist attacks, then why cannot the Indian cricket team follow suit?

It is not that I have some personal grudge against the Aussies, nor I am an extreme nationalist. On the contrary, the Australian cricket team is one team I admire the most.

But Shiv Sena’s stand on this issue surely makes sense to me. I feel that it is probably the only way to shake Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd out of his slumber and make him realize the hard fact that his country is far from being tolerant! To make him realize that great nations are always built on human respect, civil rights and liberty.

It has been over a year now that Indians Down Under have been made targets of racism and have been attacked, burnt and even beaten to death by some mindless Australians. And every time India raises its voice against this bigotry, all the honorable Australian PM can afford to say is that it is nothing, but a random criminal attack.

So be it…! How would it be if the Aussies come here and there be ‘random criminal attacks’ too! I am sure Mr Rudd would finally dislike people being purposely targeted and then probably, he would have a feeling of ‘empathy’ rather than sympathy for India.

It is true that sports should be kept away from politics. And indeed that is the way it should be. We, Indians, love cricket more than anything and consider cricketers as demi-gods. So it is just against our moral to harm the very spirit of the game.

But again, for those who do not understand words, it is important to wake their conscience with something more lethal.

Let us recall the fateful 26/11 incident! The Indian government found out that the terrorists involved in the attack were from Pakistan. And thus, all sorts of relationships with that country were snapped.

As far as sports is concerned, the Pakistani cricketers were not allowed to participate in the second season of the IPL and have found no bidders in IPL 3… the Indian junior hockey too cancelled its tour to that country!

There can be comparisons here as well. Then, hundreds of our fellow citizens were killed by psycho terrorists inside our country, and now, many of our fellow Indians are being killed by some Aussie psychos in their country. So why should the outcome be any different? Why shouldn’t the Australian government know that whatever is happening in their country with our people is just not tolerable?

The Indian government has still not been able to take any concrete measures to deal with its counterpart Down Under. And so, I am happy that at least one political party in our nation, the Shiv Sena, had the guts to come up with a statement too direct and straightforward; make your country safe for our men or you won’t be welcome here either!

Let us look at this pragmatically, we don’t want murders here! We are not ‘psychos’! But under the current situation, the least BCCI can do is ban all the Australian players in the forthcoming Indian Premier League and call off all future series with Australia till the Oz government takes some solid steps to curtail the racially prejudiced attacks on Indians.

India is cricketing super-power. Isolation from the Indian cricket board is bound to affect Australia as a cricket-playing nation.

A colleague of mine quoted Mahatma Gandhi while checking this piece, ‘An eye for an eye will make the world blind!’

I would have agreed to this thought before. But now, I feel, that if we continue to follow that idea, we would be far from solving this issue. I am not ‘Bapu’ who believes in non-violence and tolerance. I am more of a ‘Bhagat Singh’ follower, where ‘action speaks louder than words’!

To me upper and middle class distinctions are more about power. There are professionals, such as doctors or engineers that could be making in excess of 100,000 USD but who are firmly in the middle class. It is not clear if Sahiba's family was in the upper class. Maharani Gayatri Devi was certainly upper-class as demonstrated by her ability to act. I wonder if 'middle class' values are those of oppressive humility.

Nice to read about the insight into the middle class mentality. Middle class segment is always vocal in voicing their demands but are always on the horns of a dilemma as they have to grapple with every problem without being defeated.

because indian culture is not as great when seen from women`s point of view. it means women are stared at even if covered in ten kilos of clothes. when indian culture tolerates peeing and pooping on the roads why cant it tolerate women walking on the roads. anyway we are not talking about women wearing bikins we are talking about ordinary women young children and old women who get raped for just being women.

mumbai is mumbai not bcause of Marathi manoos.....Mumbai is made by joint efforts of parsis, gujratis, north indians, south indians not by marathi manoss alone.. if marathi manoos is so strong why other places in maharashtra so backward...Bal Thakrey...at this age you should be thinking of doing more religious n spiritual things than trying to divide indians the way u did earlier creating hindu muslim riots....Grow up its time.

i strongly believe that shiv sena has no right to be a political party. they are no leaders. instead of paying atention to issues like poverty, unemployment and corruption, they prefer to pick up sticks and run after youngsters for celebrating V-day. is it nationalism? they have completely forgotten the history that how we got freedom. i am a follower of Bhagat Singh.,`` actions are important``.

I agree with sudeshna, even though not a solution to problem , indians must step up pressure on aussie government in any means they can or just do away with them. Comments made by lastsaint are often done to make people guilty feeling &amp self depreciation of their own people or even could be a rouge agent of aussie propaganda trying to play it down, Such spineless timids can never get anything done in their lives, let alone solving problems. Big up to sudensha &amp bal thackerey whom for once I support for his rightous stance.

I agree with thelastsaint.

1. Mr. Thackrey(s) , it is not Palatable when yout talk about national unity. So please stop instepping.

2. Now coming back to the topic, I had a talk with may Indian Friend at Austrailia . If he is to be believed , this is just a media hype.

These things were happing before and now, there and here .

Few months back a group of foreigners were beaten at FC Road, Pune , accusing them for being the carrier of Swine Flue Virus by our Some Gunda Parties.

So What should their Govt. do . Shall they stop issuing VISA`s to Indians or Puneitesor stop our cricket players playing there? We have to undestand the difference bettwen Organised and Group crime and Antisocial Element.

For them we should not handicape a good relatioship bettwen two friendly nations.

On My opinion , Aussies are most welcome to play in India and apreceating Shivsehna`s so called suggestion is the worst idea.

Thanks,
Subhen

Well your thoughts are clear but I would say we ourselves is to be blamed for all kind of attacks on an Indian in any other country. We living in the same country are being racist why would the PM of Australia even bother to look upon these issues. He knows that an Indian is not safe in India and they do not have the freedom to go from one state to another. Guys it’s really very sad to see that an Indian is murdering other Indian just because he is from some other state or he speaks different language....Give me a break everyone in this country is free to go where ever they wish or they can work where ever they want.. I strongly disagree to this whole thackeray’s point of view need to change there thoughts..

Why are you blame Shiv-sena and MNS ? They both wants to do something for Maharashtra and peoples of Maharashtra.

In this case they can not allow to increase the problems in Mumbai and Maharashtra by allowing more flood of peoples from outside of Maharashtra.

They both wants to apply the Laws and regulations which are presently not used by Congress Govt. because the congress wants the votes from the peoples coming out of Maharashtra.

This is the game for Election.

Shivsena- MNS wants that every state in our country should do needful for their own peoples and study the problem `why the peoples run towards Maharashtra ?`

Shivsena and MNS are not anti-UP or Bihar but they are in the side of development.

Yes. Shiv Sena should ideally be supporting Australians because they have so far only attacked North Indians. Shiv Sena must form an alliance with the goondas of Australia in their war against non-Marathis.

Sudeshna, You must realize that you are a lot confused about your true feelings which you have not been able to define.

On one hand you call the`` Maratha Manoos`` thing and their violence against the North Indians bad and on the other hand you support them for boycotting the Australians when they come to India. This boycotting essentially means that according to you and Shiv Sena, Indians should be allowed to live there and steal their jobs. You don`t realize that hatred breeds hatred. This policy will act as an fuel to the already dirty politics of hatred that is being practiced and popularized in Mumbai and Maharashtra.

``I condemn that what Shiv Sena and other parties have been doing for decades to non Marathis in Mumbai``

``north indian people living with threat``

Complete nonsense ... guys please don`t exaggerate....

Recently... there were few incidents of non violence against North Indians appearing for railway exams and few incidents related incidents.

I am not supporting violence but I do feel that in case of railway &amp government jobs there is some kind of nexus to promote or influence appointments in favor of North Indians.

Media is not interested in finding out the root cause but they are happy to show few incidents and speeches again and again to increase the TRP

Please do something to improve condition of each and every state.

I dont know much about politics before 1990 or any such incidents.

``Marathis are idiots and there isn`t any Marathi who has the brains to get a visa in Australia``

Article is well crafted and with lot of enthusiasm. i fail to understand how a inhuman in Bal Thackeray ji ( Give respect and take respect) who is against our own Indians can be praised for his another act of non-sense. I dont thin banning Australians in India would be solution. Indian government has got to be strict on this issue.

I agree with Sudeshna, she is right that atleast one known and powerful personality of India has come up against Australian`s bad conduct in the past few months. He has shown the courage not only to speak but also to write against Australians. I read the comments of the people on this blog that Mr. Thackrey is wrong and Anti Indian and all. But my friends, whatever he is or he is doing at home that is one thing but now he has raised his voice against whom those killing our brothers out side of India. India is like a family and if anybody from outside tries to hurt any member of the family then it is our responsibility to protect our family member against forgetting any bad memory between us. And in this way we can make Thackrey`s voice more clear and loud. And if we at this point raise our voice against Thackrey then defiantly we are sending a wrong message to the world that India is not united.

Well?if this is the case why are buying all the products from China?Basmati rice from pakistan finds way in India?

I do not think what happend there is as serious as what china/Pakistan did and is doing to us?Why Hold australian Sportsmen responsiable for this?

The problem is with studnets who are indians who go there to study there and try to get PR and work illegally for 10 Dollars ?This is affecting the employment of the poor locals in australia as they are forced to work for 10 Dollars illegally rather than 25 dollars which is the government rate?

More important why is so much money being spent on IPL ?does it benefit the nation?is IPL doing any charity?BCCI should be taken over by sports minstry and money from cricket should be used for development of other sports?

No Point being a world champion in which really only 5 Good eams from WOrld Play?

I have lived in Australia for over an year and I can tell you it is one of the most wonderful countries in the world. They have themselves criticized the Indians.

However, Indians should not go to Australia to study if they do not have enough money. Why live in low income neighborhoods in the west?

Just as Indian owners of IPL teams refused to quote for any Pakistan cricketer quietly, they should have also done it for Austraian cricketers. Even now they should themselves exclude Australian criccketers from playing elevens when playing any match in Maharashtra and spread rumours as in case of Pakistan that it is for the safety of Australian cricketers in view of Bal Thackeray`s alleged threat and Bal Thackrey would not mind being given one more Gaali for the cause of India on Maharashtra soil.

I am surprised by author`s stand on Bal Thakrey. In short this is what Bal Thakrey is doing.

Lets fight Australia on racism issue, once we are done dealing with that, lets fight internally.

Bal Thakrey is demonstrating what is very common is a chaotic and broken house. They fight amongst themselves, but unite for the time being if an external threat loom upon. I have seen this happen so many times in houses where brothers fight with each other but would unite to fight against a neighbor. This is not a sign of healthy values. So beware of towing on Thakrey`s lines.

In my opinion, when dealing with issues related to racism, especially at international level, jingoism is the last thing you want to practice. Bal Thakrey will just make Australia stand on defense and the much needed cooperation from Australians will be lost in a second.
Lastly - I don`t recall Thakreys being a constuctive players in solving any issue. All they really do is find an issue and start a fire. They just like to destroy. Be it national intergrity, or international issues regarding safeguarding Indians.

Thakreys should keep out. They are not skilled to solve problems. They just burn stuff.

I agree with Ashutosh from Calcutta. Shiv Sena is a terrorist group. Marathis are idiots and there isn`t any Marathi who has the brains to get a visa in Australia. They are incapable for getting jobs in their own state and which is the reason why the Shiv Sena has such a lot of support.
Thackarey is simply playing double standards. Most of the people attacked in Australia are North Indians. Rare incidents here and there by extremists or miscreants does not imply that the entire country is against Indians. Over here, an entire political group goes as a gang and attacks/kills innocent people. Whos is the wrong-doer here?

Hi Sudeshna,

I totaly agree to ur coments, I might not be able to write such a big blog as of urs or others.

But I would like to add here a important thing and that is the Aussies should think that if they can attack Indians in australia then same can happen the other way this can be horrible n uncontrollabe as it is difficult to control such situations in India when it begins.....

Ridiculous post, no offence to the writer in personal, but the blog could be more clearly written. You cant hate Shiv Sena for one thing and like another !! Clearly the writer is influenced emotionally.

You can block sports, then what ?? Would the Australians stop !! Bloody hell no. Educate the Indian Students and what is the Indian Embassy in Australia doing, they should be rallying with the students, not having tea with biscuits on a garden lawn !

Bottom line, the blog would have been more apprecative if it was clear, as to the writer , congrats, it was brave enough to voice yourself.

Cheers

I think what is happening in Australia is similar to what is happening in Maharashtra. Why should Australians be more tolerant of outsiders (Indians in this case), than Marathis are of people from UP/Bihar/Tamilnadu?

Replace ``Australia`` with ``Maharashtra``, and the two situations are exactly alike. For once, I understand the Australians.

Racism is curse wherever it is and Indians should be safe in Australia. Now double standards by SHIV SENA and Indian people are once again again becoming fool. I mean what is happening in Australia is because of racism. I condemn that what Shiv Sena and other parties have been doing for decades to non Marathis in Mumbai.

Sudeshna,

Once I was also a big supporter of Shiv Sena . But after the great Marathi Manoos
I am totally disappointed in it

After living in same country for years we did not learned to stay together
How do we expect other country to learn that?

Maharastra will not allow other state people to work their because they are taking local people jobs. How do you expect aussie to accept it.

Let me make my self-clear that I am also against whats happening in Australia and hope that Indian government should do something to wake them up
But its totally unacceptable to hear from Shiv Sena

What the difference it makes that you beat somebody inside India because they are from Bihar or outside because they are Indian

About Pakistan that’s totally a different problem.

I think we are not getting a simple lesson that to grow we need to learn together and fight together by forgetting all our difference

I agree with Sudeshna, but politics should not be mixed with sports. Individual states have no right to decide what has to be done, it is the duty of our government.

If Shiv Sena does what it`s saying about aussie players, won`t we be similar to Australians themselves. We should welcome Aussies and set and example for the world.

i too agree with balasaheb on this. he is among the few persons who has the guts to call a spade, a spade.

mahatma gandhi`s ideology does not work everywhere. it might have worked against the britishers. if it is sure that the other person is going to take our eyes, we better take their eyes first. if some people have to be blind, then let it be them.

Sudeshna,

Let us not expect Pakistan or Australian govenments to do what we cannot manage in our own country.

Yesterday, I saw a cabbie beaten up by MNS goons on National Television...obviously this is a routine incident and no one was surpriced..on record, on National TV!!! What has the Indian Govenment done about it? Maybe it is the job of the Maharashtra State Govenmnet? So what should we do ablout it? The BCCI should not let the maharashtra and Mumbai teams play in North Indian states?

I would have hoped that atleast educated folks will not agree with rabble rousing tactics by politicians. Baning anyone Pakistani or Australian is not a solution. In fact the solution is IMHO is the exact opposite..i,e, being more inclusive.

Actions speak louder than words. But also look before you leap..you may never be able to climb out of the narrow pit that the politicians had dug for your action.
