Gujarat riots: Ten years hence…

February 27, 2002 is a day which changed the social and political landscape of India forever. On this day the S-6 coach of the Sabarmati Express train returning from Ayodhya was burnt near the Godhra railway station in Gujarat, resulting in the death of 59 kar sevaks. If this was not tragic enough, what followed thereafter was one of the saddest episodes in our country’s history, along with the 1984 Sikh riots and the mayhem unleashed during the partition.

Many of the 94 accused in the burning of the S-6 compartment were from Signal Falia area of Godhra. Out of them 63 were acquitted last year.

Riots bring out the worst form of bestiality in human beings. The death of kar sevaks allegedly by the minority community saw gruesome riots unfold in Gujarat resulting in the death of more than 1200 people, mostly from the minority community though a large number of Hindus were also killed. The 2002 riots spread to districts like Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Saberkanth
a on February 28. Violence extended to the rural districts of Panchmahal, Mehsana, Kheda, Junagadh, Banaskantha, Patan, Anand and Narmada as well, the day after. Bharuch, Rajkot and Surat too were gripped in the tentacles of riots.

India has seen these mindless killings before – the Delhi riots, the Meerut riots, the Bhagalpur riots, the Kandhmal riots and so on. But sadly in the end when the dust settles down it is the common man who is the worst sufferer – their lives are changed forever – having lost family, friends and loved ones, sometimes their businesses and livelihood.

Even after ten years of the riots the famous photograph of the tailor from Gujarat, Qutubuddin Ansari crying and begging with folded hands to the unreasonable mob to have mercy on his family breaks one’s heart. He was spared but unlike him so many others lost their lives. Have the ones who lost their family moved on after a decade? In fact, will they be able to ever move on? For some there may never be a closure. While some are still waiting for their missing members of their family – even if it means seeing their dead bodies; others are still waiting to be rehabilitated.

Many more have been doing the rounds of the courts for years - some of the guilty have been booked while trials in other cases have dragged on. There are some who say that no one from the state machinery has come to wipe their tears or offer solace while there are others who say that the Gujarat Chief Minister was directly responsible for the riot toll going up.

To be fair to him, with Narendra Modi at the helm, Gujarat has become a role model for other states over the years. It is a state where development and inclusive growth is a buzzword. Moreover Modi has a relatively clean image and often says that he has only one agenda – to continue the success story of his state. He is also somebody with his eyes on the top job in the country – to become the Prime Minister. That is where the trouble starts.

There can be no doubt that as far as the Bhatiya Janata Party is considered, Narendra Modi is one of their tallest leaders and a potential PM candidate, but will he be acceptable to all outside his state? Or will the 2002 riots continue to haunt him and ultimately be his nemesis in spite of his Sadbhavana Mission that is said to be a deliberate attempt at an image-makeover.

Some quarters maintain that Modi is a target of hate-campaigns mostly supported by the Opposition party while there are others who have no doubt in his complicity in the crime. Police officers in Gujarat have gone on record to say that the CM asked them to go slow on the rioters. It is relentlessly argued that if Modi had given the state machinery orders to act in time, many lives would have been saved. Nonetheless not a single FIR has been registered against Modi and no court had held him guilty. So are those who have already proclaimed Modi guilty driven by personal agenda?

This is a point of endless debate. But one thing which requires no debate is that with all the commissions, reports, the SITs, the court cases, Narendra Modi has not been able to shrug off the perception battle that has continued to haunt him ever since 2002.

When the then Prime Minster Atal Bihari Vajpayee had told Modi to carry out his rajdharma, it was taken to be an indictment of the CM for deliberately fanning the communal fire. It has also been revealed that in a letter dated June 1, 2002 to Modi, Vajpayee had expressed his concern over the delicate communal situation in Gujarat and had raised his doubts over whether the riot-victims were being treated fairly.

Moreover, what has baffled many is the refusal of the man to say sorry for the riots that happened in his state. He has refused to show remorse - not for being directly involved in them, but for the fact that the riots happened under him. People argue that it would have proved to be the balm that the victims needed. But maybe Narendra Modi sees it from a different prism – to apologise may be perceived by many to accept that he was largely responsible for what happened.

Whoever or whatever may have been responsible for the Gujarat and other riots, the mindless killing of each other can never be explained by the rational mind. Violence in the name of religion can never be justified. As Mahatama Gandhi said – “I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary; the evil it does is permanent.”

Post Script: The politics of the riots will go on for years. Even after 10 years, Gujarat riots still rankle in the minds of the Indian citizen - Best Bakery killings, Gulberg society massacre, Naroda Patiya carnage, Naroda Gam slaughter, Dipda Darwaja butchery, Ode village bloodbath and others are a scar that India will have to bear forever. It is 10 years now, but we can keep counting - the wounds may never heal unless there is earnestness from all sides to do so.

the religion is a way of life, it can be foowlled in your personal life if you don`t have a self thinking process. it is true that today there are many people who don`t have a thinking of themselves they should refers to religion, others who have an opinion on every thing can leave the religion aside but they should definitely read books of that religion and think over the facts mentioned there. because you should only protest if you know the facts. the facts in all the religion is almost same with some traditional differences as to how to wear clothes this and that, this does`nt make them different it only shows that there are 1000 s of good ways to live life. you can choose one of them or can develop your own new way. today at least for indians and i am sure many others whose countries are not good, this covers whole world because no country is good today, the only religion to be foowlled in social life is patriotism and love, respect for fellow beings. and become one.

the writer of this blog seems to have copy pasted the views from other ``secular`` media , that is why she has repeated every thing again which the so called ``secular`` media reports every year on godhra riots anniversary . no media person ever tried to show the loss of those karsevak`s families whose childrens were burnt alive, i strongly condemn what happened in godhra riots but being a minority muslims should respect the religious sentiments of majority, all of us know what muslims have done in kashmir against kashmiri pandits but nobody raised any questions against them, muslims should respect the fact despite facing the pain of partitions the hindus of india allowed muslims to stay here with respect whereas their muslims brothers of pakistan chose to behave otherwise and slaughted many hindus and sikhs, muslims themselves chooses the path of violence ,just have a look on the latest bombings on israeili diplomat in delhi in which muslims are involved. everytime they commit some terror act they justify it by saying that` injustice was done to us`, think what will happen if all the hindus start thinking the same way about what happened to kashmiri pandits, then there would be godhra like situations every where,,so stop complaining and think for the better ways , so that every one can live peacefully.

your comments are mirroring the truth how hypocratic the law of the land is and of course the rulers! i can`t remember a single incident where such criminals like narendar modi have been booked and punished in the entire history of independent india. is he any lesser than hitler? does`nt the world know that hitler was a very good administrator too and he was also responsible for having given a better face to germany by his developmental projects but he was at the same time a dictator for whom genocide was a way to vent his anger against the jews. so just on the basis of his progressive steps he took to develop his country why the world doesn`t remember him and praise him? well any right-thinking person will abhor the very thought of killing any innocent whether it is by muslims or by hindus or anyone. no one can justify what happened in godhra so also no one should ever forget and forgive a criminal like modi of gujarat. it is a shame that he continues to be a chief minister in one of our states. such people deserve to be shown the doorway into the gallows.

madam your views are more professional than reality.so far as atal bihari is concerned read `times`magzine of london.regarding godhra kand you are bias .it is congress mirror to divert attention from 1984 riots and to come in power in this state. congress is doing so in bihar too by saying that press is not free.in some other states also it is on this job and even governors appointed by congress are performing this duty .further you have naratted the killing of muslims in a heart touching scene it means the killing of hindus was a common matter.you mean the hindus were potatos and onions .to heal wounds of sikhs they have posted manmohan as pm. i am 77 years old and am not a bjp worker . i have seen conress activities minutely.they are so cunning and cheater no one can judge.if i narrate it will be out of context.if we say congress sapnath then bjp is nagnath.so concluding these lines.jaihind

sir, i have to say that since last 10 years nothing happened and gujrat progressed far more then expectations we have to forget past and look for future. public sees what is happening in 2 to 3 yers who cares for 10 years back? congress if they want to show there presence in gujrat has to forget past. they should see what happened to bjp in up ? ram janam bhoomi has given nothing to bjp after 5 years. now again they have come with the same moto. people see current situation not past. no body is interested in boffrs or ram janam bhoomi or 1984 riots in delhi or gujrat riots.

partition of india was the original hurt, ramjananbhoomi movement was a result of the blatantly pro muslim policies of congress, the anger against the babri demolition caused the burning of karsevaks which led to the riots.so congress is the main villian, they did nothing to assauge the wounds of partition,1984 victims, the exiled kashmiri pandits-rather they play oppuchunistic vote politics, what are they doing in up-promising reservations on religous grounds, polarising communities, but still calling thenselves secular

in gujarat congress had motivated lot of latif kind of minority mafia`s in past, by reading fact of history, congress uses minority as wild card to win any election, minority usually votes with lot of emotional values, when mr. vajpai ran office without corruption, this congress were amused how to topple down this government?
ahh for the allah sake , tell me honestly my muslim brothers? why did you kill those kar sevak? and must check why hindu`s got so frustrated? for the sake of congress party played politics? congress is using this minority wild card so bjp would never be able to get in power as long as this so called liberal generation remembers. i think it is your loss that mr modi become victim of most corrupt central government of indian history. look at what they are doing with you as tax payer? does this means minority is not a tax payer? yes you are along with majority. i see every one of you are victim of congress party.

INDies - India
true secular india for whom? it is for the people which i doubt, perhaps manipulated by media & media house, justice system and politicians. we debated and invested prime time almost 50% on gujrat riots in last 10 years and forget past from independence to 2002. so called anchors, writers, editors, media house articulated and manipulated change name of incident. couple of example, like instead of naming it godhra riots or post godhra riots, now it is gujrat riots, sarcastically mentioning other riots in indian history at different places. mumbai blast 26/11 is more important than other blast in all over india. missing other riots like sikh killing, post babri masjid demolition darbangah, muradabad, kanpur, varanasi, aligarh, mumbai including aehmdabad and many more blasts so question is why????. we have hardly discussed kashmiri pandit holocaust and they are living in the stress camps in new delhi since 1989. how often we gave space to other region of people, like mao region, north east region. these so called anchors, editors article writers manipulative, selling emotions instead of considering human values i hope they will understand bullets, bombs, stampedes, accidents they do not care religion, they take care life of the person and leaving behind associated trauma, scars for victim’s family. nobody will take-care us unless we will take -care our-self. we learned lessons by losses but if we have cracks and wound in our society certainly, other will enjoy this sweet pain. it is story for others but pain is only for suffer therefore, i would like to request every one please join our hands, spread love, we will take care our neighbors and community no matter what.

i like most of the those comments which implies that 59 kar sevak killing was so bad that 2000 killed later on was very justified. another justification is since gujrat is progressing, we can kill 2000 people and one more, it is all work of congress. i guess killing after killing is justified and mostly people are happy with that while tehelka provided the disgusting facts about modi, bjp, vhp, bajrang dal and their true hindutva. most people in india are intimidated by minorities while majority has everything! i guess if more minorities are killed, the majority will see more progress and happiness and justify the crimes as there will be no one to ask a question. killing in any form is bad and those who allegedly killed kar sevaks are punished according to law. the problem is those who killed 2000 people later on are saved by bjp, vhp, bajrang dal and will never be punished. after that we will say baccha baccha ram ka janabhoomi ke kaam ka.

u mean burning alive of 59 kar sevaks was not sad but what followed thereafter was one of the sadest events in indian history. well i suggest u read the country`s history once again. can u imagine the pain of people who were burnt alive and the pain of their family members. is it easy to control your anger in such a situation and remain secular.

why media ,writers or govt is talking about gujrat religiously, and absolutely not remembering the genocide against helpless sikhs in 1984,giving you a clear signal of congress personal agenda.i am totally against violence regardless it was godhra ,or afterward roits or 1984 genocide, but it is shame to say these all are well orchestrated by our congress run govt for their personal gain.

``to be fair to him, with narendra modi at the helm, gujarat has become a role model for other states over the years. it is a state where development and inclusive growth is a buzzword. moreover modi has a relatively clean image with only one agenda – to continue the success story of his state. he is also somebody with his eyes on the top job in the country – to become the prime minister. that is where the trouble starts.``

three things that i don`t agree...
1) gujarat was never a bihar so attaching modi with development doesn`t hold much ground. it was always a developed state.

2) modi has been accused of abetting one of the worst communal genocides of independent india. so i doubt he has a clean `image`. also, he is against the idea of state lokayukta, so his `clean` image can`t be justified.

3) i have no idea how the writer came to the conclusion that modi has ``only one agenda – to continue the success story of his state.`` his agenda could be to clean up minorities from the face of this country. it was pretty evident during 2002 riots.

other than this...a very balanced approach towards the incident. a nice read!!

if mr. chidambaram is not responsible for the police action against baba ramdev and if congress-i was not responsible for the mindless killing of sikhs after the assassination of mrs. gandhi, how can mr. modi be held responsible for what happened in godhra? he is being hounded by upa government because they have not been able to dent his image in gujrat. another reason for going after mr. modi is the certain knowledge in congress that there is not even one leader in the party who can even remotely be compared with him. love him or hate him, that man is going to be the pm of india in not so distant future.

today is the 10th anniversary of godhra carnage !!! but the media is so biased ??? they hardly have any lines for the carsevaks who were brutally killed . they could have had interviews with the carsevaks family , have their anger & sorrow shared with the readers but all media are hell bent to discuss what happend after that?
there is hardly any sayings for the plight of kashmiri pandits or bangaldeshi hindus ( beacause they are hindus ) . india is the only country in the world where majority does not have a say and all the media is biased giving little coverage or no coverage where there are actrocities on hindus. nor any one comes in their support ....

today is 10th annv of godhra carnage ??? and guess what lots of so called ngos coming together for supporting muslisms....and issues like voilence & so on.... after that???
not a single ngo cares for those carsewaks families or are not brought into limelight ...

think every morning about this.... does any one have answers on this ???
