India can’t take thy barbs, oh mighty Gora Sahib

To The Point
a
The Washington Post feels that India’s Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is a tragic failure, someone who after riding back to power in 2009 now leads a deeply corrupt government.

''Image of the scrupulously honourable, humble and intellectual technocrat has slowly given way to a completely different one: a dithering, ineffectual bureaucrat presiding over a deeply corrupt government".

WASHINGTON POST BEING DEROGATORY ABOUT OUT OUR PM, OMG!! We can’t allow them to get away with this, was the common refrain that seeped out of the corridors of power in the aftermath of the terrible ‘tragedy’.

Phones were worked on right and left of Raisina Hill and in ministries on both sides of the Rajpath. Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni hurriedly asked for an apology from the paper for lowering the dignity of the office of the Prime Minister, others in government condemned it.

"How can a US daily take the matter so lightly a
nd publish something about the Prime Minister of another country? I will speak to the Ministry of External Affairs and the government will seek an apology from the daily," she said.

By day fall, the Firefighting Express had chugged across the town, TV studios, the web, high tea get-togethers and the cocktail circuit.

A Gora Sahib had done it again and that’s news… like it was when Time magazine dubbed the PM as an underachiever.

Post’s India bureau chief Simon Denyer rubbed the government the wrong way at its most sensitive spot - India and the PM’s image in the West. Manmohan Singh is an economist of repute and commands high regard in the global circuit, any wrong press coverage is a strict no no, and if coming from the Washington Post it patently alludes to bad news.

The merits of Denyer’s frontal attack on the Prime Minister may be debatable but what has predictably come out of the entire episode is the jittery reaction of the establishment to any bad news coverage from the West, especially from Uncle Sam.

While the PMO claims Denyer had apologized, The Washington Post correspondent has refuted all such claims and continues to stand by his report, further angering the mandarins in the South Block.

The latest episode has once again exposed the morbid fear of the Gora Sahib that runs deep within the Indian consciousness.

The Prime Minister’s Office will not take notice – in this magnitude – to the criticism from the Indian press, like it does with the foreign press.

Why is that we can’t take their criticism face on or even better just ignore it?

How much value does a Washington Post report on Manmohan Singh’s weak spots hold for the aam janta of this country and more importantly do we need a certificate from the US of A for everything we do?

Instead of crying hoarse over what the Washington Post feels about the PM, the government would do itself good by focusing on clearing the haze that seems to have engulfed its functioning.

Indeed the government has developed the image of being a den of corruption. But, certainly, the PMO doesn’t need the Washington Post to show them the mirror.

Rather than hyperventilating on a foreigner putting a value to the PM’s worth, it is time the government starts looking inwards.

And, it is also time to stop worrying about the Gora Sahibs, the people who will vote you back to power are all brown.

its not uncle sam’s fault. the research says that an average 30 years old american is as equal to a 10 years old indian school boy.
us is actually scared to believe the fact that india is emerging as economic giant. we are doing appx 60% american job work sitting in india.
this is nothing but constipated frustration of us govt. again, it’s a new election mantra. after all everyone has a job to save!

``corruption is an infallible symptom of democratic polity``says gibbon in ``decline and fall of roman empire``.this is not an inducement to corruption but a sad reflection on the functionality of the democratic polities in general.that is why francis fukuyama foresees ``the end of history.....(of the liberal democracies)``and fukuyama`s proverbial ``the last man`` will perhaps be the editor/reporter of ``the new york times``. targeting the pm for presiding over a corrupt government is biased and prejudicial because why not all the narratives of pain, such as corruption, in various parts of the world, aren`t acknowledged and targeted?why julian assange, the whistle blower of corrupt practices, is
targeted and harassed by america & co.? perhaps double talk and multiple morality has become the post-cold war social theory of america and its fourth state.moral policing is not befitting such hypocrites.

our political bosses and those in governance are showing rare mental fragility in taking criticism to heart. in anycase post`s assertions about pm manmohan singh may also be the sentiment of vast numbers in india.

what a great congress party? what a great pm , with such economic vision?? salute for bringing glory to india as detailed.
77 % of india can’t spend more than ` 20 a day. 80 % of india’s population or more than 850 million people live on less than 2$ (`` 92) a day… worse than many parts of the sub-saharan africa. the wealth of 30 odd rich indian families is equivalent to 1/3 rd of the country’s growth … the super rich concealing the ugly face of poverty. an alarming 22 % of world’s poor live in india, battling hunger, poverty and disease… more people are mired in poverty in eight indian states than in the 26 poorest african countries. india has the largest number of stunted, wasted and underweight children… half of our children are malnourished, a record worse than the world’s symbol for deprivation- sub saharan africa. nearly 50 % of the world’s hungry live in india… india is ranked 66th out of 88 countries in the global hunger index. around 35 % of india’s population- 350 million are considered food-insecure, consuming less than 80 % of minimum energy requirements. about 58 % of the subsidized food doesn’t reach families below the poverty line. about 5 % the population (50 million people) are unable to but food grains even at bpl rate through out the year. more than half a million children have died in the state of madhya pradesh alone due to malnourishment and lack of health services. every third indian or nearly 400 million people live below the poverty line. between 1997 and 2007, more than 1.3 million tones of grain (13,000 truck loads) decayed in storage in a country which has more hungry people than 33 developing nations… foodstuffs worth more than ` 58,000 crore are wasted annually. since 1997, around 7,300 farmers have committed suicide in vidarbha, maharasthra. at least 10 homeless people are dying on the streets of the nations’ capital everyday… about 75 % of the urban population is poor, living on about ` 80 per day. no doubt india ranks 134 out of 182 countries in united nations human development index, worse than syria, worse than many african nations too.

and why has wp not attacked the leader of the corrupt pm, the corrupt foreigner sonia? is she not at least as guilty as the pm for knowing about the corruption of her partymen, knowing about the gutlessness of the pm and still not doing anything about it, as chairman of the party? or is it that the foreign lady profits from the way the bheeru pm works and has a hold over him? is she perhaps afraid that another pm would go his/her own way and even might attempt to remove her? thus, foreign red sonia has hijacked indian politics and the indian press is very comfortable with that. she heads the nac and thus is responsable for the deeds of this corrupt government. but neither ajith vijay kumar, nor any other indian news media is ready or willing or bold to express this view. it seems that aj kumar too is very much influenced by the gora sahibaa. keep it on, aj kumar. may be her whiteness will rub off on you some day, if you keep the silence on her not accepting the responsability for the rampant corruption. and if you find this mail abusive, then join the ministries and the babus, for your reaction is the same as theirs, then.!

indian politicians think they are god and no one can question them or comment on them. in reality they don`t have the maturity to deal with such comments. they are like kids who cry when someone passes a comment.

very good article. but i dont think we repeating the same mistake calling them gora, when they are pink? (huh, i even dont know how to say pink in hindi).
it is more than fear, it is an allegience and subserviousness of better-life-west-lookers that is worrying. we are not educating our kids that the goras are not here to promote us or to do charity. but to utilize us.
