Is it too early to write off Anna Hazare?

In what seems sardonic now, a key Team Anna member, Arvind Kejriwal at the height of their success had said on a national television during a debate – “If people like Aruna Roy decide to sit on a fast for their version of the Lokpal Bill and if 50,000 people come to their venue then the government will be forced to listen to her. Otherwise she will be force-fed two days later.” This statement of his must have come to haunt Kejriwal this time around when his team went on a fast at Jantar Mantar beginning from July 25 in Delhi to press for a stringent anti-graft bill and an inquiry into the allegations of corruption against over a dozen ministers. However, the crowds were missing on this occasion, the media was asking uncomfortable questions and the so-called TEAM was clearly flustered. So much so that a key Team Anna member attacked the media saying that the fourth estate had been told by the government to downplay the stir.

However, the crowd did swell up during the week
end and it became considerable when Anna Hazare himself decided to go on a fast from July 29. The anti-graft crusader was greeted by a much larger crowd than what had been witnessed in the past four days. Around six to eight thousand people turned up at Jantar Mantar on Sunday as per reports, whereas only a few hundreds were seen at the venue since July 25. Inspite of the thin crowd in the first four days and many warning him about his health, the Gandhian decided to go ahead with his fast-unto-death proclaiming rather confidently – “Till we get Jan Lokpal, the countrymen will not allow me to die.”

Probably Anna took it upon himself as a challenge to send a message to the government that he still has steam left in him and that his persona will be able to attract the crowd which his team could not. However, Anna may withdraw his fast like he did in Mumbai if the crowd cannot be sustained. But all that is for posterity. This is the fourth indefinite fast by Hazare since April last year. The April fast was followed by one in Ramlila Maidan in Delhi in August and in Mumbai in December. In between, he also undertook single-day fasts in Delhi thrice - in June and December last year and March this year.

So did many of us write the epitaph of the Anna movement and of the diminutive man from Ralegan Siddhi rather too soon or have we got it right? Though I may not agree with many aspects of the way Team Anna has conducted itself, I do feel that if the movement is slowly dying its natural death, then it will be a victory of the all-powerful political establishment and a defeat of the common man. Because what we witnessed last year gave us hope and what we witnessed subsequently is another story all together.

Cut back to last year - The celebrations that were witnessed on the streets of India on the night of August 28, 2011 after the Lok Sabha passed a resolution agreeing to all the three demands put forth by anti-graft crusader were unprecedented. The celebrations were for the victory of the common man over an all powerful establishment. I had gone to India Gate and the Ramlila Maidan to soak in the atmosphere on two earlier occasions. And I also made a small monetary donation, just to contribute to the cause in my own little way. Both the times I could feel the energy of the people – the candles, the rousing songs, the Anna caps and T-Shirts and the multitude of flying tricolor. Though the cynic in me knew deep down that the menace of corruption and the power of the politicians would not dissipate overnight, I too started hoping. After all it was the time of Arab Spring and people’s power. The resilience of the common man was at display in many parts of the world – Libya, Tunisia, Egypt and Syria. Also there was something magnetic to see Anna sitting on the stage and attracting a multitude of people around him.

It was no mean task for Anna to be able to force the government to sit up and take notice and to force the Parliament to cede to people’s aspirations. One could only imagine that the Jay Prakash Narayan movement in the seventies against corruption and the autocratic rule of the incumbent Prime Minister Indira Gandhi must have been something of this sort. Not many of us can forget when Prime Minister Manmohan Singh rose in the citadel of democracy and exhorted Anna to break his fast as he was too ‘valuable’to the nation. The PM also said – “I salute you.”

But as they say that time is a great leveler and the greatest eye-opener. The same Congress party was rubbing its hand in glee when a thin crowd was seen at Jantar Mantar. Infact it threw challenge at Team Anna exhorting them to fight the 2014 General Elections. It also accused Hazare and his team of turning dharnas into a ‘joke’.

Anna's call for a second freedom struggle last August, though I do not subscribe to the term – was successful mainly because of the participation of the middle class who was reeling under the weight of rising inflation, price rise and the helplessness of getting anything done without greasing the palms of those in power. The 2G scam had added to the revulsion.

When I visited ground zero last year, I found majority of the people from the middle class. I talked to couple of them and they all said that they had come in support of Anna and what he symbolised – a clean society where the all powerful would not be able to trample the have-nots. And yes, not everyone was there for the Lokpal Bill – many with whom I talked didn’t even know the difference between the government’s version and Team Anna’s version of the bill. They were there because somewhere they could see a glimmer of hope of a better cleaner society and in Anna they saw hope of a better future. However, it cannot be ruled out that the most successful of all Anna’s movement was said to have the tactic support of the RSS, though the man did not ever acknowledge the same publicly.

Nonetheless, the crowds failing to turn up initially this time around does not mean that corruption has vanished from the country and all is well now. And who knows the support for Anna may swell in the coming days and force the political class to once again take note of the simple man from Maharashtra or it may wane as the days go by.

Maybe Anna and his team need to do some introspection as to where they went wrong. For starters they cannot keep changing the goal post too often. They started with the need for a Lokpal Bill and then started demanding a SIT on more than a dozen ministers. No one is denying the fact that if you are in the wrong you must be punished, no matter what position you hold. But to use harsh words against the political class all the time (though some of them deserve it) and be too loud does not always work.

Also, Team Anna members getting embroiled in certain cases of cheating and fraud has not been good for their credibility. Prashant Bhushan’s take on Kashmir also did not gone down too well with many. In between some members like Rajendra Singh, called the waterman of Rajasthan and PV Rajagopal quit the team due to differences like Team Anna campaigning in Hissar which was virtually seen as a campaign against the Congress party and not against all political parties which were corrupt. It was said that a non-political movement had become political. The team has also been talking in different languages. For example, on the one hand his team was leveling allegations against Pranab Mukherjee, the new President of India and on the other hand Anna Hazare congratulated Pranab for occupying the top post of the country. They definitely did not appear to be in sync.

There is also the contentious issue of whose Lokpal Bill should it be? Should it be only Anna and the team's version of the Lokpal Bill or should it be a bill where consensus has been drawn from all sections of civil society and the best bill is thus passed. It is no secret that the bill which was passed in the Lok Sabha and got stuck in the Rajya Sabha was the government’s watered down version of the bill. Maybe, Team Anna needs to relent on certain issues and definitely the government needs to relent much more.

Post Script: Maybe we the people should not be in a hurry to write the obituary of the man from an obscure village of Maharashtra. Even though I may not agree with some of the means and at times the obstinate nature of Anna Hazare and his team, the cause that they are fighting for is in our larger interest. Anna tried to do what you and I have been wanting to for a long time. So let us not give up yet... After all isn’t four decades enough time for the government to have passed a bill?

there was a general view across this nation that indian media and corrupt people are trying to weaken and downplay indian anna ‘s movement against corruption, thanks to them now finally after receiving flak from all quarter they have finally aired the public growing anger and showed the world that picture of thousand people venting there anger at government, media should be ashamed of weakening this movement under shred of weak turn out at jantar mantar ,today general masses are busy and and hughly engrossed in there daily ordeal ,hence they can’t always turn up in large number ,but that doesn’t mean that they are not supporting .every one is strongly supporting this movement it is indian media who is trying to downplay and sabotage such movement of national importance by relating it to such a petty issue of low turn out at jantar mantar and baba ramdev’s sharing dias with narendra modi. instead focussing there news on core issue they are deliberately influencing public opinion /mind on unnecessary issues.the can,t see arvind kejriwal and thousand others fasting for past four days.
our hero is not pm manmohan singh ,president pranab mukherjee , ak advani or narendra modi.our hero is anna hazare , baba ramdev and arvind kejriwal .
i would request international agencies/media .pls intervene and understand the plight of Indian masses ,pls intervene .Indian masses are gradually losing faith in india media.

not a single honest person is stated as known to anna.anna does not state that he knew any honest person. anna quarrels with his verigated and changing team. there is no honesty in anna`s ways also. last year anna relished crowd. now he is aruijg at his failure. no one likes anna. nor anna`s ways. a pity thast congress picked a tool like `ann` only to divert attention of honest persons. every moment shows tghe fact that anna is agent of all the corrupt persons in government.

such debates are held or conducted to divide the people (similar to the clarifications or statements given against and for the accusations, allegations, etc., of anyone), and it is never in the interest of the public, but the vested interests of the conductors and the participants of the debates!

it is a part of the problem under a ploy of divide and rule, but never a part of the solution only to enlarge or enrage the issues!

``wake-up citizens, jaago duniya, understand the reality & facts``!

annaji, i am always supporting a honest movement to suppress corruption. our political business, administrative systems, education systems, public services all become a root of corruption. corruption ca not be errupted by shifting one official from one place to another or by givinf few visits by political leaders to crisis places. there is no moral value in it.now a days politics is agame place as constitution of india is a heaven of lawers. so i support your dicision to raise a political party and if need i can volenteer myself in this race. i am educated and retired person from a oil industry.

i do not understand, except team anna or team baba ramdev, nobody has realize the action of corruptions in the govt. as well as pvt. offices or similar places. so everybody should stand for the struggle to remove it. upa-i & upa-ii ... ... ... so on is encouraging corruptions and not doing anything. madam sonia et. al., also engaged of grabbing public money. so why they`ll take action against it.
so everybody should support anna`s/ ramdev`s agitation if anybody not able get together struggle for it.

all indians, except very few powerful politician, babu and rich ( hardly 2 or 3 %), are victim of present corrupt system. only difference is these 2 or 3 % elite class is united to protect the current prevailing system beneficial to all of them or people related to them. while majority of the people 97 % is not united and fractured into caste, religion, class etc to defeat this system and these people.
moreover, these 97% people become a tools directly or indirectly, numbers of times in hand of these corrupt people to serve their limited personal interest than national or larger public interest either in the name of reservation or otherwise etc for vote bank politics.

well said manisha first of all no body wants to write off anna but he himself is bent upon it to do so. what is more important that many of our fellow countrymen do not know the details of lokpal bill and its purpose. when we the people waited for forty years or so why in a hurry and give ultimatum to govt!! after all one man anna can not be the only one to decide the terms of lokpal bill. again when anna has no trust in govt why he should force it to pass the bill? the bone of contention is that the people of our country should themselves learn to secrifice and recognize himself first and say main main houn and not main anna houn !!! when anna even says that during elections people get r 25000 to fifty thousand for a vote ! if so than the poverty line what govt has projected will prove totally wrong !!! let us all introspect.

all the tv channels and reporters should understand the situation and they should also have to think that they and their family are also part of this country. it`s their duty to show the 24x7 live coverage of anna`s protest. instead of asking the ``faltu`` questions to team anna go and ask the question to upa government, why all the corrupted ministers are still in the parliament. why the court cases on them are running year on year. please don`t just think about your channels trp, at least once think about country. otherwise one day you will also a victim of all these corrupt politicians.

z-tv and manisha out of all news and tv channel,i see article of a reporter of integrity, others have same story as if they were fed by some agency of goi.

this is, i believe ,social sites and western media will pick it were indian news paper failed, day is not far that majority realised and smell something fishy in indian media, i see early sign of it reading comments both in social media and on papers by readers.

now,why focus on how many attended, why not focus in cause- what anna and ramdev are doing is clean-up indian political landscape, to large extent people of the nation are in synch with them.

the other point is,like media politician have lost their way- hope they get this and come to address issues relavent to nation and not their pockets, sooner they get this better, otherwise they may not be re-elected next time.

it was true in past public was distracted by errelevant issues, but now it is not possible anymore and that is very good sign i see for future of india.

anna and ramdev keep-up good work.

well said manisha,
but about the media a common man can also know what they are doing now and what they had done in last anshan(in 2011). that time in the news papers team anna news was on front page with a big picture and well described news. many news papers had a campaign to discuss the views, but this time all the medias including news papers and channels together got the wisdom that anna movement is not correct, m surprised

anna is a creation of the frustration of a country with its political leaders. we cannot let this die out. its not whether anna is right or wrong, but about what he stands for, so let us work with this mass movement to clean up the country somewhat (it will never entirely be clean). even if the people of this country need to become militant, the country needs cleaning up and finding its place in history.

fact is that most of educated person knows level of corruption in india and know that there is no real democracy in india but instead india is a banana republic. indian media is part of india , we all are part of this great nation. with current level of corruption india will chaos after 15-20 years from now . if we fails to bring strong anti corruption law then it will big failure for country . anna has lived his life ..its we younger generation and coming generation will suffer . of course india media ( print plus electronic) is not fair this time to team anna and anyone can feel it while watching talk show\debates on news channel. even if anna`s fight against corruption will fail , anna and his team will always be remembered. people are frustrated to their core , including team anna members , as an ordinary citizen i don`t see it is wrong if arvind kejiriwal\sosodia etc using hard words against politicians and pm and cursing them.

i think gov should sit with team anna should and try to bring strong lokpal but not an monstrous lokpal. no law can be perfect even team anna`s law jan lokpal . if people themselves don`t wanna be pure from heart and stop doing wrong things ,no law even jan lokpal can solve the problem .

dear manisha, i do not know if most of the indian journalists do not have common sense or they are projecting things under pressure (which is being openly talked about for a lot of media channels). it will be a pity if the first condition is true.first for your kind info. on very first statement you quoted for medha patekar, a similar statement arvind has quoted for himself as well recently in which he clearly accepted that the govt. bowed down because of anna hazare and that`s why the team didn`t wanted annna hazare to go on fast to avoid further medical problems to him. secondly, about the crowds those who think protest are like movie shows whose success is measured by the selling up of the people, i feel are taking a very narrow approach of assessment.the crowds didn`t turn up because the movement stated on weekday and it takes some time for people to warm up and come to streets without media support(i think no one thinks why iac chose 25th july, wednesday as a starting day). last year there was sensational media support which is not there this year, the reasons you know better.one of the most cynical media assessment i think is that crowds turn up because anna hazare sat on fast. it is common sense that if i was in delhi i have to work on weekdays and have time only on weekend to go to jantar mantar given the ill reporting done by the media and dire efforts of the govt. like mock drill of metro and rerouting of the buses. i believe that if you had done any opinion poll on 25th and today, it would have given the same results the only factor for any diff. would be the tiny positive reporting done by media today.regarding use age of strong words, if you will be severely ill treated on a personal issue to the extent that member of your family even commit suicide will you use words of respect for the culprit. go and visit the families in the villages and if your blood doesn`t boil. iac people are doing this even for a non personal cause and if you are really concerned about change and truth, join iac and work with these people you will yourself feel how strong words you yourself have used. i am not in india right now but i have been with arvind in 2005 when their group used to work for rti and have witnessed the ground realities.

dear manisha ji,
i think that the politician`s biggest power is their unity.right or wrong their team is united. similarly we have to unite rather than highlighting the differences of our opinions. a team says right or wrong we are with u....i salute u for being with us.
