Naveen on a green mission!

Orissa Diary
a
These days Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik can be seen daily in newspapers, almost on every alternative day, planting a tree in some part of this denuded city. And the group of men and women in elite getups, with glee on their faces, preening for the video cameras and perhaps, trying to boost the morale of the CM for his delayed noble efforts, little realizing that such acts are being viewed by every conscious citizen as a mere palliative.

The disease has gone so deep into the health of the state that such photo ops look like publicity stunts than actuated by real veneration for nature. It is a reality that forests are an 'antidote' to environmental degradation. But this is a reality that people in power bother little about.

Lets begin from the capital city of Orissa, Bhubaneswar, the city so close to Naveen Patnaik’s heart, who incidentally is also the Forest minister of Orissa. The city is fast sinking into problems despite being a much publicise
d model city.

The environmental aspects of this once cool city have been put on the backburner. No doubt crores of rupees are being spent on its beautification but the core issues remain grossly unattended. A birds-eye-view would show a vast concrete monstrosity, spreading over 250 sq. kms, with a motley patch of green. Perhaps the only lifeline left for the equally unmindful citizenry of Bhubaneswar.

The upper class suffers from complacent insularity and the middle-class tries hard to remain ambivalent. However, the majority bears the brunt of summer solstices. The winter is already becoming an alien concept. In a way, the entire lot of over 20 lakh population crowding this capital is inured to all the ills.

With a majority of the trees in the city fast disappearing it has had a direct impact on the lives of a good number of wildlife species like squirrels, bats, mongoose, lizards and reptiles are on the run. Trees being roosting and nesting ground for the birds, they have migrated or just vanished from the city.

"Urban wildlife has an invaluable role in maintaining the ecological health of cities. Even sparrows and mynahs are useful insectivores and keep the cities clean of insects and pests," said Biswajit Mohanty, an environmental activist.

It would not be an overstatement to say that, Bhubaneswar city and the surrounding areas have emerged as few of the hottest spots in Orissa where mercury had often crossed 45 to 46 degree during peak summer coupled with a humidity factor of 85 to 90 % making lives more miserable. The summer afternoon breezes, which play the role of a catalyst to dilute the wrath of heat, are becoming less.

Naveen Patnaik's government has an unconquerable passion for concrete and it shows. The multi-storied skyscrapers and innumerable mobile towers are indeed fast replacing the trees. Let’s imagine the amount of radiation from the towers affects the children and the old persons. "The BMC (Bhubaneswar Municipality Corporation) has been only issuing the notices to remove these towers but has failed to penalize the mobile service provider companies or the house owners " rued Mohanty.

"With more than 80 percent of the city area coming within rapid urbanization and the trees disappearing at a phenomenal speed, time has come for the people to prepare themselves to weather a heat condition of 48 to 50 degree Celsius in coming two or three years " warned Biswajit Mohanty.

There is a determined group of advisers to the Chief Minister who make persistent efforts to derail any serious discussion on environment in the state and the latter seems to be allowing himself to be carried along by such curiosities like planting tree saplings and so on. They make persistent bids to idealize such pestilence, killing city, through the guise of beautification etc.

Gabriel Garcia Maquez pointed in one of his books that "each man is master of his death and all that we can do when the time comes is to help him die without fear of pain."

But, it would be an understatement here when we know that the conditions, if not attended, would worsen into an unbearable reality where you won’t die without fear of pain but, the pain itself is going to kill.

this writer is clearly out of her league. having played tennis in university, i can tell you that partner compatibility is a much essential factor -among other factors. if two players have a difference of opnion, then it will affect their game. anyhow, it is aita that is dancing to leander`s tunes and is out gunning for bhupathi & bopanna. the real reason why this is happening is because bhupathi sidelined the aita and organized a atp tournaments where international tennis professionals played at bhupathi`s invitation. this did not go well with the aita. leander used this to convince the aita to go for bhupathi`s throat. bopanna is just caught in the middle. the writer/s should check their facts before they start writing.

i don`t understand what they are quarelling about.you pair any player with anyone including paes and bhupathi they are unlikely to win anything.they don`t stand any chance in the world against federers, nadals and djokovics.they are over the hill players at the fag end of average carrers.they should sit back at home and not waste taxpayers money in going to london.

your opinion suggest you don`t understand anything about tennis. the key to a good partnership is the chemistry between the two in a pair, not individual rankings. bhupati-paes can`t win matches anymore because both have weak service. either of them needs an younger player to support. now bopanna hasn`t been playing with paes who by the way prefers more established partners e.g navaratilova, stepanek. so suddenly destroying the bupathi-bopanna partnership seems to be an outrageous idea. this is only possible in india, where individual egos matter more than real chances of the country. this mentality alone is the reason we can`t win medals in olympics. remember last olympics paes-bhupathi lost in quarter finals

you cant force people to be patriotic..its sport, not a battle field..what wins medals is hardwork, high quality training and a good team spirit..patriotism comes only afterwards and tips the match in favor of the patriotic athlete only when all other things remain same..

all said and done below is the only logical option.
mahesh and rohan as pair one.
if leander still wants to play for india!,
he can take any other indian with him.
anyways he has not won doubles gold on previous four attempts and no one is going to find faults with him for not winning it for the fifth time. also this will allow possible pairing of mahesh and sania, if we are lucky with her wild card.
this really its ideal condition for leander if he truly is a great indian sportsman to pair with yuki and give it a go and tell the world that i can with or without you. it also will put pressure on mahesh and rohan to do well and we may really get a medal.
also just think about poor yuki, what he must be thinking? will leander accept me as a partner? will i get a chance to go to olympics, once in a lifetime opportunity for any athlete. aita has forgotten to put option six, not send anyone for tennis and punish entire nation ratherthan

you are prejudiced against bhupathi. paes is equally guilty as bhupathi or rohan but you do not think to write anything about his selfish nature and why everybody is against him. please learn to write in a professional manner keeping your personal opinion aside before venting your emotions.

dear mr george from ernakulam, i just have one question for you. have you made any meaningful contribution to the country? if a few tennis players have some personal issues, it is up to them to decide how to tackle them..u cant put a gun to their head and order them to compete for the country..we are not ussr or china to resort to that sort of state organized goondaism..people represent the country and every citizen is important..

for the present senario, acquainting with two teams is the only possible otions we can have. tennis is game, which hightly depends upon the flow interwoven between the players, instead of individual caliber. and if that spark is missing, then their no sense of craving them out.instead it would be better to give a chance to young budding star, who knows he might become another shining star for our country....anyway country`s pride should always be counted above individuals arogance, dis is the real time to show ur sportmanship.

those who are not wishing to play for the country should be thrown out of india. this should be a lesson to paltry egos after making lot of money with government support. country hates such donkeys who are to be treated as treachers and anti indian.

We had read in school that ``if you do not care for and nurture your land then one day it will cease to nurture you``. But seems everybody read it for exam only ,not implementing it. I think we should first of all modernise education ,should make it value based . Now a days education is exam based only. Once we make education value based it will solve lots of problem .
