Stop mocking God

Once again Hindus are angry and upset. The photographs of a one-piece swimsuit with a portrait of Goddess Lakshmi printed on its front and rear recently offended many in a country which is emotional about its Gods and Goddesses. Hindu-majority India is different from the West; here God is not a design element.

Australian fashion house Lisa Blue – which designed the swimsuits and bikinis with portraits of the goddess of light, prosperity and fertility – not only apologised for the incident, but also halted the production of the swimwear range.

This was not the first time when West’s practice of painting Hindu Gods on objects displeased and offended Hindus across the world. In 2009, American fast food chain Burger King ran a print ad in Spain, which depicted Lakshmi seated atop a meat sandwich with the catch phrase, "A snack that's sacred”.

The controversies do not end here. Supermodel Heidi Klum dressed up as Goddess Kali for a Halloween pa
rty; French shoemaker Minelli came up with shoes imprinted with Lord Rama’s image; NBC’s Saturday Night Live showed Lord Ganesha as a sex act; Seattle-based 'Sittin Pretty' came up with images of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Kali on toilet seats.

The Hindu organisations have time and again lodged protests against such imaginations of the West. The protests may be forcing the offenders to withdraw their products or sometimes apologise, but is that all? The habit of Western designers to bring religion into the realm of their creativity offends Indians and they seriously need to learn that.

And those who cite artistic freedom while denigrating God, they should learn the freedom of expression does not give them a license to hurt religious sentiments. The satirical cartoons of the Prophet Muhammed published by the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten a few years ago angered Muslims across the world so much that they set on fire European embassies. Well, I don’t support the assassination attempts on Danish artist Kurt Westergaard for his controversial caricature of the Prophet Mohammed. But his argument - "It was not a hate cartoon; it was a defence for freedom of speech" – does not seem to be bona fide.

Western designers need to understand that for Hindus, who are very sensitive about Gods and Goddesses, it is very difficult to bear the culture shock. Being liberal and creative is welcome, but not to the extent of hurting someone’s sensibilities. As with the freedom of expression comes the burden of responsibility.

hey you all leave alone all gods, godesses alone. they are being worshipped and stay in temples only. would you like to print pictures of your family females on bikinis ?
if you want to print decorative females pictures, there are many in hollywood and bollywood who are decorated with jewelry, see-thru clothes and naked bodies. someone showed me a set of panties printed with sexual acts. may be that may be good idea for innovative artists of bikini designers who can do anything to make money.

writing to resolve religious issues were always wasted times. looking at the flair of your writing, i should say you should have opted to write something better.

you should not forget that the representation of hindu gods are in artistic form. it is used as art. be it nataraja, saraswati or any deity - these are in art forms. it is used in artistic mode for designer products. it is wrong, i do agree. but they have their own flags displayed on their panties, which is so sensitive issue. comparitively, a picture of jesus there will be boring because its not art. hindu deities have themselves well decorated in jewellery and beauty, which is why it suits designer products. a picture of jesus or mary cannot suit. try imagining, it wont make sense.

you need to re-think about your statement `hindus are too sensitive about gods and goddesses`. if yes, cows would not be roaming on highways free for trucks to kill them. and it`s an issue if they are used for human hunger. but it`s ok if it is slaughtered by a speeding vehicle.

moreover, hindu gods are way older than christian / muslim gods which are just 2000 years old. they are the gods which marked the beginning of a time - ad and bc. so yes, the matter holds some freshness and is more prone towards reality considering the recent times etc. i personally think you are too young to gain and edge over this. spend your youth writing on much better issues. leave religion to your old age. ,)

one question to western designers?

will they dare to test their imaginations by morphing a photo of their neighbor?

definitely not, reason is that they will be sued till they loose their last penny.so the argument that imaginations have no limits is wrong

Congress alliance won in all the assembly in full majority. Please don’t make wrong statement. Tamils wants live peacefully in both India and SL.

You are so religious by your blood. What is a difference between “people killed in Afgan and Pakistan” and “people killed in Sri Lanka”? Why are you seeing one as crime and not other?

yes, hindus are very sensitve about god and goddesses.sensitive to god images. that tells the truth. these images represent certain values and culture which we always forget. i am not justifying the act....but...
god shiva represents the ultimate unity. goddess saraswathy, emergence of njaana. and so on... images are onle images.
these images are memes created over the centuries by hindu religion in india. sadly,we praise and go behind these images without the touch of sublime njana. education and njana are totally different things. that`s why these doings hurt us. once again i tell you i am not ratifiying the action.

it is our own fault.
we cannot blame others for what they do !
i am a hindu but i do not believe in icon worship.
we hindus are the first to show the world our own
comic images, cows, drinking cow piss, cow worshipping etc...etc....
first, all these images are not gods and godesses !
second, we hindus know and consider that god is without form, impersonal but can assume forms !
third, we cannot make images of god based on mythology !!! no proof whatsoever !
we must deal with the cows in the street making a bad image of india and hinduism !
we must reform our religion to be at least reasonable in a sense that we are not following properly the scriptures..
we do not have any hindu universal leader that help us to make some changes and reforms in our system !
we call devis and devtas - god and goddesses !! this concept if completely false.
as a hindu, i am completely disappointed but i will still remain hindu because i believe in isvara - god, the only supreme master without a second. we can give name to god such as rama, krishna, as messengers or representants of the supreme god but not idol worship ! we must change ! the images we worship are not gods and godesses ! i prefer arya samaj, another branch of hinduism ! please, tell all hindus to stop cow piss drinks ! it looks like cheap people !

so how does all this effect one personally? how many times do u see pictures of gods lying on the roadside and you have picked them up.

also when u say that some gods are older than the other makes no sence. its just that god has come down in differnet forms. being old or young makes no difference.

We should give marching orders to those MLAs and should not be allowed to contest. Similarly criminals should not be allowed to contest. Nothing more nothing less. People can do any mistakes and not our elected leaders. If they like porn movies they are free to watch their home and not in Legislative assemblies. These people can not resist then they should go home and watch at home. All these politicians are spoiling and looting the country. They should not be spared.

good short analysis and bang on article but one thing or say headline is missing why western creative minds always target hindu or muslim gods and relate them to their most fascinating act: sex/porn. vikram ranabhatt pointed out very good things in his comment. but still if we talk only about in the western context they again and again do this. either to make fun, publicity, or have some hidden agenda. this is ridiculous that you are painting some god picture in bikini what type of creativity is that need serious medical attention.

why should we critisize only ausies but our hindi artist are also same responsible. when hussain draw ``saraswati`` they term hussain its masterpiece. should they give his wife/daughter & say that pl. make a piece of art. one thing i can`t understand why nacked woman are portaited as masterpiece. this means women are showpiece to see & use.

i totally agree with you johnson.i want add to the cow example.in india milkmen(gawala) normally kill bull while infant by not giving proper food and milk, since bull won`t give milk in future.people here respect the cow but only on cow day(some hindu festival) rest of the year they roam like aeroplane. in hinduism 30 crore gods are there if some designer paint some pics on the clothes next day you will find people claiming hindu god painted on the cloth crap!.don`t forget human made the god not god made the human.religion is one of the way for the life not life itself.most important religion is not associated with some symbol, image or pics it comes from heart and mind.if you associate your religion with any symbol you will feel ashamed, offended each every day.

nice blogs kamna! but i feel your research is biased .your on perception westerner is bit biased and hypoactive.
in india also people are doing the same thing.

in all laughter/comedy show the artist makes fun of hindu god/goddess.(lord ram, sita yamraj etc..) and mind it performer are hindus only.

you can find god/goddess picture on rice packet and number other items which after use go to dustbin or poor people use it as doormat as well.

there are number place you can find hindu people knowingly or unknowingly humiliate their own god.

only difference is those news are highlighted by the media .but in the daily life people offended their own god don`t come to news as those offence are acceptable in society nowadays.

either start giving respect to your own god and then crate awareness through blog or take these things lightly because having image of god laxmi on bikini or undergarment doesn`t offend or humiliate one`s god.

hey writer. i was shocked to see that people don`t agree with your views. i agree with you 100%. i have not seen jesus or virgin mary on any underwear anywhere in the world. what about putting their faces on dustbins, urinals out of creativity? i would be the first person to protest if such things happen.

most of these so called designers want to create an impact and get in the news. hindus are still an exotic tribe for them. they are supposed to be poor, filthy and their `gods` are supposed to be treated for fun.

also, out of sheer frustration of india`s growth, they are acting like this. no better way to show `us` our place, than by treating the god that we worship in this uncivilized way!

keep writing girl. don`t let these fools take you down.

this article you have written is with the same ``freedom of expression`` right that you share with everyone else. you have the right to get offended, but don`t have to the right to act illegally.

all religious people get offended easily & religious extremists get offended by all other religion other than there own.

if an artist has really crossed a line in creativity, let the court decide & not the mob, which is the real issue here.

time and again the religious sentiments of the people have often been hurt by the delibearate acts of wild imagination of the west. no amount of protests have mattered to any such offences. it is really sad that this is what is termed as creativity by the thinkers in the west.

where in ncert book its written ``...e.g. in ncert books..sikh 9th guru teg bahadur is being written as dacoit and 10th guru guru gobind singh as terrorist. what is your say on that.``

fyi...because of guru teg bahadur ji and guru gobind singh ji..hindu religion is survived. otherwise there were only muslims people would have been seen around whole of the asia specifically in india, if guru teg bahadur ji has not sacrificed his life. read the history and then comment. and let me know the excat details of the ncert book where it has published. don`t post anything if you are not sure. thanks. charanpreet - sikh - indian.

all of you hypocrites: 1.1 billion people = lot of sex but talk about sex and everyone gets offended. if you hate west so much then stop dressing like them and copying them in every aspect.
aren`t we communicating in english here?!
the point is hinduism is not represented by idols of deities. it is spiritual journey that everyone takes individually. that`s what makes hinduism so unique. give lisa a break

unfortunately majority of present generation all faiths do not understand hinuism the complete way of life. symol of god enhances ones feeling of nearness to god. any body knowingly/unknowingly showing disrespect in reality is imaging his inner dirt that needs to be washed either by love. stubborn cases need to be brought to justice. respect for all is a humble part of life and integral part of hinduism the way of noble life

indian politicians most of them are fools. they dont know they have to be cautious about pakisthan. ``give us or we will bite you`` is the mentality of pakisthan. that policy went against themself. now they have no choice but to negotiate with india. this is the time india should go tough in such a way that they cannot go back to their old policy. it is not at all a good idea to allow pakisthani businesses in india. it will become a thorn in the flesh later. pakisthan think china as their partner and india as a milking cow. india has to keep that in mind always when dealing with pakisthan. let china be their partner and milking cow. china know how to suck pakisthan as they do with many other countries in the world like venezuela and some african countries. keep pakisthan a hand length away. that is better for india.

@ sagar....``the legislative assembly of delhi passed a resolution on october 29, 2001: ``this house strongly condemns the attempt made to distort the history of the country and resolves to support the implementation of secular education policy based on the provisions of our constitution.`` the house went on to recommend that on ``page 328 of [the] 11th class ncert curriculum book madhyakalin bharat, under the heading `sikh`, appropriate amendment may be made and objectionable portions about shri guru teg bahadur ji be removed. .. that book authored by individual writers containing objectionable comments about various religions including the book titled ancient india be proscribed forthwith``. by an order of the delhi government (october 9, 2001), the portions containing derogatory reference to guru teg bahadur were d. `` this was decision taken by delhi govt....rest u can google and find all about what i said..and to let u know i am a sikh...

why are they using photos which should not be and going for cheap publicity techniques?
irritating others and hurting their delicate / sensible topics would turn and produce bad results.
i don’t like that particular designers. it does not matter whoever the god and what ever the religion is, it hurts their beliefs and feelings.
