Well done Deepika Padukone!

Women too are living beings like men and several other forms of life on earth. But isn’t she meant to be different? I mean, she is a woman and is “supposedly” meant for a man’s consumption! That’s what most voyeurs think and believe.

India, as a nation, is yet to curb increasing number of rape cases, molestations and sexual crime against women. The so-called “fairer-sex” has been sexually objectified and has been disgraced in all possible ways. And the list doesn’t end here!

It was indeed a moment of great pride for women folks to see Deepika Padukone take a firm stand for womanhood and tell all those who stooped too low to make her essentials a “newsworthy” story!

Breasts are as much a part of a woman’s body as her limbs and sense organs are. And it’s natural for women to be endowed with them. So what really gives people the authority to objectify her body? A woman owns her body and it should be nobody’s business to seek voyeuristic pleasure by intruding into her private space and deriving pleasure out of it.

Here’s how Deepika retaliated:

“Supposedly India's 'LEADING' newspaper and this is 'NEWS'!!??
YES!I am a Woman.I have breasts AND a cleavage! You got a problem!!??
Dont talk about Woman's Empowerment when YOU don't know how to RESPECT Women! (sic),” Deepika posted on Twitter.

It is nothing but an act of cowardice when images of actresses (which are shot with an intent to show more than what is required) are circulated online. It substantiates the fact that a woman, no matter which strata of the society she belongs to, is subjected to abuse of varied nature.

The plight of women in India today paints no good picture.

I have seen preposterous sketches (drawn by male commuters) of a woman’s body on the interior walls of Mumbai local trains. Many of these sketches even go to the extent of treating a woman as an inanimate object and virtually raping her.

That shows the psyche of a man, who crosses limits to show his fetish for “flesh” and his attitude towards women at large.

There are endless instances to validate the fact that women are more often than not treated as mere pieces of flesh meant for a man’s consumption.

A woman’s beauty extends beyond her body which shallow thinkers can never fathom.

Every woman is a recipient of/or stands witness to the following:

Men poke fun at a woman’s bust or her posterior and evaluate whether or not she is “perfect”.

Cowards don’t miss an opportunity to grab her when amidst a crowd, thereby making the most of the accidental proximity.

Men often brush past women’ ears amidst the crowd to whisper vulgar remarks.

And the list goes on...

The crux of the matter is that a woman’s body is no object. She is blessed with organs that are different from what a man is made of. She puts her own life at stake to give birth to a new life and nourishes it by breastfeeding. She is beautiful not because of what she looks like but what she is capable of.
