What did Anna Hazare’s Jantar Mantar fast achieve?

Uncut
a
Team Anna’s latest fast at Jantar Mantar was initially greeted by a tepid response by the aam admi and the media. After the high-voltage show at Ramlila Maidan last year, the camera lights had dimmed. Adding to the concerns of the anti-corruption crusaders was the absolute thumbs down by the government; no one from Lutyen’s Delhi appeared to be interested in them anymore.

The same ruling establishment which had wooed and ‘saluted’ Anna for his indomitable spirit and called him too ‘valuable’ for the nation, completely ignored him, a year after Parliament adopting a ‘sense of House’ resolution on the Lokpal Bill.

Although, the movement did gain pace after Anna Hazare himself took to the stage and began fasting along with others, it is clear that the latest round of fast did not really have the kind of action that they had hoped for.

Fact is that Team Anna was on the backfoot and had no strategy to counter the Congress led UPA government’s wait an
d watch game. One could almost feel them rubbing their hands in glee. As they say – Time is a great leveller.

Given the above scenario, Anna called off his ten day fast on Friday along with his key aides Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia and Gopal Rai and made an announcement which has started off a national debate.

Just before breaking his fast, Arvind Kejriwal revealed what we all had anticipated. “We will form our own party, the name and the manisfesto of which will be decided by the people.” So finally Team Anna has taken the all important plunge.

The question is whether Anna and his men had any options left? With nothing much happening this time around, they could not have simply called off the fast without a face-saver. And this declaration of providing a political alternative was probably the best option left for them.

Critics of Anna and his team like senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh have maintained throughout that the movement had political aspirations. In fact it was also being said time and again that people like Kejriwal were using the diminutive man from Realegan Siddhi for their personal ambitions.

When Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni said that they always knew that Team Anna were inspired by politics and that it was good that whatever the intention was it had come out clear, one could almost feel the sense of victory for the Congress party. Also it may have given them a sense of confidence. After all political arena is the grand old party’s area of strength but appears to be completely alien territory for Anna’s motley group.

It’s not just the Congress, to take Team Anna on in their own turf and in their own background will be something parties cutting across political lines will not mind.

But the moot question is whether this experiment of Anna’s men will succeed or is it embarking on a path of destruction? Politics is a different ballgame altogether. And that too in a country like India where caste and religion play an important role in electoral politics.

However, Team Anna can take solace from the fact that the last couple of state elections have shown, albeit slowly but surely, that the voting pattern of the country is changing. The last elections in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh did bring to light the fact that people are voting on the plank of good governance and development. And if Team Anna can convince the electorate that they can clean up the system, the people of this country who are fed up with deep rooted corruption may give them a chance.

Will Anna be able to provide a formidable front in 2014 is a matter for posterity? However the immediate challenge that will confront them will be how to embark on the road to electoral politics. It will be anything but a smooth ride. It will be bumpy and pull of potholes.

The transition from being a pressure group to a political front will not be easy. What will the organisational structure of the front be? Questions will arise on ways to fund the elections and the task of finding more than 500 ‘clean’ candidates who can win. Also the team has to be prepared to take in criticisms just as any political outfit is criticised if they are found wanting. Apart from their views on corruption and Lokpal, the team will have to make their stand clear on a host of issues confronting the country. For starters, they have to start talking in one language and their intentions have to be pure.

Post Script: But as Ghalib said - Ek aag ka darya hai aur doob ke jaana hai. Likewise the team has to prepare themselves on a war footing to jump into the political cauldron of India. However, let us not be cynics and let us give Anna Hazare and his band of soldiers a chance. In a democratic country like ours everyone has the right to form a political party and fight elections. After all there are more than 60 political parties and seven national parties in India. There is surely space for one more, especially one which promises to be different.

Whatever the outcome or fate of Team Anna may be, one thing is sure – we are in for interesting times ahead.

it seems that anna hazare and his team has no intention & courage to fight against corruption and corrupt system. they oftenly go on fast like mahatma gandhi did against british empire, their intention is very clear to be in news. if their intention is clear then anna and his team did not run away from the war room. it seems that they are misguiding the country and they want to collect the fund for their ngos.

morning shows the day,we indians will always be served by such wwf/fake manipulators with hidden agenda.sooner than later they have shown the actual colour....how can a soldier who has gone to war come back alive having lost the war. missions are achieved by steel nerves not weaklings and self serving haughty bureaucrats....we indians would have appreciated kejriwal laying his life for the cause rather than the cause being laid for likes of kejriwal.poor quality of leaders not able to stand to there commitment today how do they assure they will not change again citing some other alibi.....god bless we indians we had corrupt netas, fake babas, and now pseudo social activists...

i am ready to support anna and vote for his party.
but my concern is that `` corruption is done not only by the government but also by each and every individual. especially people working under government sectors. everyone does it and they are obsessed. they find it part of their earnings. then will we be able to stop the people from corruption? i don`t think so. it is nearly impossible ...`` i just hope it can be reduced.

nostradamus, datta avadhoot predictions will come true -india
heading towards mid term polls & corruption free state.
nostradamus predicted that there will be mid term polls in 2012,there will be vertical split in bjp and its one faction will get 2/3 rd majority.(advani just now has hinted in his blog.on friday anna hazare & his team have hinted towards formation of fourth front.)
this prediction was published in the daily newspaper indian express nagpur in
1998-99
datta avadhoot,a mumbai based dutt devotee has predicted that there will be corruption free government in the coming 25 years (datta avadhoot earlier had predicted that, ``sonia will enter in politics after the death of rajiv``, which came true later on & he also had predicted in 1980 that ``people will have mobile tv in their hands``, which also has come true now.)

manisha, first of all i congratulate you for this article.
as of my view, corruption can not be removed by any law.its the moral responsibility of every citizen.
anna movement has only added a new topic to the electoral campaign speeches...corruption.

you quoted ghalib beautifully.but i recommend a song for aam aadmi on this note.... mera jeevan kora kaagaz kora hi rah gaya.

for me, anna hazare movement was like a ram gopal verma`s bollywood movie with just one difference, a movie wastes a few hours of time and it wasted more than a year.

the beginning of anna`s movement was appreciated by one and all as long as it was a non-political movement which had the support of people.anna would have done well if he had carried it on as a people`s movement.be it gandhi or jaiprakash narain they achieved success because they led the people`s movement and not political parties.i do not see any future of anna`s party and will finish up like other small parties.his movement could have been organised and kept alive through relay fasts, rasta roko and alike.any way i wish him the best of luck.

this was a strategy of congress to advertise team anna`s efforts as political ones. all thanks to media and naive writers, congress has succeeded in doing so.
still, i do not think congress or corruption is something which can defeat anna`s dedication towards india but if we lose trust in his efforts, that will be great lose to him. one old man is fighting for you against a corrupt and dictator govt. don`t be a fool how media is trying to make you. even if anna enters politics, he will be the politician for a common man. you can not change the system at least trust someone if he is trying for you.....

it is now very clear that a simple man like anna has been taken for a ride by a bunch of clever ,arrogant, revengeful persons, most of whom behaved waywardly during their govt service tenure.they became known to the people by electronic media support and now want to cash on that popularity by joining the very politics which they initially despised.these unworthy people should be taught a lesson whenever they contest elections bcoz they have betrayed the nation.

writing the articles and posting comments is very easy....
team anna was on fast for you people... even if i assume that it was for political reason, how many leaders can fast for over 10 days? atleast there was no ``bharat band``, obstruction in trains or forceful closing of shops. this is what is done by actual politicians, not the fast.
shame on you people who think it was a wastage of time. if someone is trying for good reason, just support him. ``the true power is revealed while swimming against the current.``
guys, not sure if team anna`s political journey will be successful or not. but before raising doubt on him or his team, just think team anna was much-2 better than all our existing political parties. if you can do what he has done (or tried) for indians, i will support you too. if you can not, at least respect and support those honestly who are doing it for you.

team anna fell to the strategic plans of the congress divide-and-rule policy. also they were politically naive besides being an ungrateful lots. they did not have guts. they could have openly acknowledge, infact, applauded the support of the prinicpal opposiion party - bjp and their rss supporters. they could have easily taken shelter of the ``sub-judice`` approach towards modi. they could have applauded bjp for making yedurappa resign in the wake of lokpal hegde`s report. and supported ramdev when he needed the support of the civil society the most. it was too late too little. the peoples movement has to have people of all shades with them, without falling into the trap of ``secular or non-secular identities``.

team anna must file honest candidates from all religion (muslims, christians, buddhists, dalits, sikhs and hindus) in all states and for all seats. team anna must not take any chance of missing even one seat. even one seat can make a lot of difference. if annaji want to wipe out corruptions from india then annaji should form a fourth front (non-congress, non-bjp and non-communist). minorities, dalits and secular hindu votes will go for annaji’s secular party. long live mahatma annaji. bharat mata ki jai.

i feel, the team members of anna are very scincere. they have people with them and good intentions. all so called diggaj politicians will sit in opposition, then what is the fear in our mind? i think at this point of time we need a big change. the same old people will never bring in the new ideas. i strongly feel lets give chance to the new party. we tried both these parties so many times.

what we are seeing is the metamorphosis of india`s political scene. it is bound to be messy, painful and slow often halting, but irreversible. we the common, decent citizens are facing a choice - to wait for the perfect solution or support the messy process?

i support this messy process because the dynastic models of congress and all other regional parties except national party bjp are going to be threatened.(priyanka had to come on the stage) secondly the messy process will bring closer rural and urban voters on a platform that is relevant to both. thirdly the internet based network will reduce the cost of running the campaign significantly.

this is not a rational, logic driven but aspirational process that free democracy creates and lets it flow in the community.like a river it will it will twist and turn, often reverse the course and go in loops but in the end broaden itself into life nurturing source.

to doubt and be sceptical about the propsal of team anna to jump into the cauldron of politics merely because the political system is playing the dirtiest of games is to aver in a subtle manner that there is no hope to purge the system and therefore noble intentioned people should stay away from politics is to me indicative of an avoidable sense of hopelessness...an effort is being made to cleanse the field of electoral politics by team anna and they need all the encouragement and positive assistance of one and all...should we tell a newborn to leave this world merely because it is full of deceit, dejection and death and that survival is difficult here!all you sceptics out there please try to contribute in a positive way to the exercise of nation building and try to dive into this task with a sense of sincerity and integrity...three cheers for team anna`s indomitable spirit of sacrifice and service..

such debates are held or conducted to divide the people (similar to the clarifications or statements given against and for the accusations, allegations, etc., of anyone), and it is never in the interest of the public, but the vested interests of the conductors and the participants of the debates!

it is a part of the problem under a ploy of divide and rule, but never a part of the solution only to enlarge or enrage the issues!

``wake-up citizens, jaago duniya, understand the reality & facts``!

anna hazare`s policy track last year against anti corruption, corruption free india was followed with good response from the civil society and the aged 75 years social activist who followed the gandhian policy was promoted to the jan lokpal bill which was failed to reach the goal. ho ever upa government agreed to follow anna`s anti corruption policy. but the present fasting followed less approach supported in jantar mantar by the civil society and also government also not taken any move towards the fasting of anna team. later due to the followed by important personalities the fasting has been withdrawn. anna has followed of creating an alternative political party. this is to say wavering policy followed by the social activist activist. my opinion anna should follow the anti corrupton policy should be followed throughout the country followed by the agencies propogating how the exchequer pulic funds were swallowed by the political looters of various parties and making the people fools by giving wrong assurance in the poll time and getting the vote bank and pushed the democracy back to the ditch. all the corruptions like 2g scam, cwg scam . adharsh housing scam , land and mining scam of bjp at karnataka state by bsy, ysr congress land and mining scam of jagan mohan reddy of ap state, goa mining scam recently brought by the cm of goaand many more in the corruption field . when all these corrupted is propogated allover the nation people will follow how they have been deceived and why they are still 80% of the population is under poverty line. if anna team follows this repetedly there will definitely a vote bank change in poll of general election 2014. imagine . and think the better qulity of anna either to follow anticorruption policy or to form an alternative political party in this crritical posture.

no need for this paty to spell their stand on any other issue except corruption and good governance.

every other party has a stand on most issues but they dont have the will to bring it to a logical conclusion. they will try their best to drag anna`s team int controvercies by asking them to spell their stand on controvercial issues like kashmir etc....

annas team should say they do not have a stance for any other issue as the biggest issue is corruption and corrupt politicians, once that is taken care of everything else will fall in place.... i hope the day will come when the looted wealth belonging to the citizens is confisicated and returns to the country for building a stronger india.

all the best annaji.

only saying to join the politics will not be enough and solve the problem of corruption. a serious group have to form to decide how to fight with other corrupt political parties. local political parties have good hold on people. like nitish kumar party in bihar, mulayam singh party in up. so question is how how our party(anna party) will fight form them. what strategy we have to make is matter of discussion. once you are in politics you will be totally in danger jone as other political parties will certainly try to crush you. we have to be very careful. jai hind. vande matram

the composition of politicians we have currently does not have the will to support Anna's demands. We have seen this in the last 16 months. We also know this mindset is not going to change till 2014 elections. The stand taken by Anna is the best suited to current scenario. The present players of politics will think twice before fielding their candidate. Anna's move will change the political picture of India.

500 clean men / women will not be enough. there should be some qualified persons to become pm, fm, hm etc. we can not hand over the nation to in- capable clean people. talking of cleanliness, team anna members are also not found clean. better they should support the present experienced & capable leaders who are found some what clean irrespective of which political party they belong. as a commoner i also have some ideas to run this country well.

Brigadier (retd) S D Dangwal - Dehra Dun, Uttarakhand
anna drawn into the killing field of politics

the news bout team anna’s declaration, in response to a request by leading luminaries from civil society and a referendum, obtained through sms, that the fast which commenced at jantar mantar on 25th july will be called off on 3rd aug at 5 pm, is met with a mixed reaction from the people. also, the core group has declared their decision to take their fight against corruption for which the movement was conceived and started last year in 2011, by joining politics and taking the subject issue to the people in 2014 general elections. in the absence of the government’s desire to engage with team anna and abstain from showing any sensitivity towards the people’s movement, which mobilised civil society like never before against venality in public life, the core group of the movement was shoved into a corner to reconsider and redraft their strategy: as joining politics remained the only possible alternative to influence the political system. it is extremely unfortunate that, the movement which had the potential and future to become a public uprising against corruption, and spread across the length and breadth of the country has been aborted, by the government’s stratagem. a government steeped in corruption and poor governance, has come out trumps from this development, much to the relief of the political class in the country, irrespective of the party and ideology to which they collectively subscribe to.
notwithstanding the views of various panellists, who were seen debating and discussing the issue on prime time news channels, from the ‘veiled intentions of the team to join politics, the futility of coercing the government from the outside on a matter of constitutional propriety of legislating and enacting a law and making a beginning towards bringing about a political transformation in the politics of the country’, is a matter of opinion. wearing out the movement by ignoring it was a calculated move on the part of the government’s spin doctors to isolate and frustrate it, and which it has. by a pincer hold of law and constitutional authority, which the government was able to apply on the leadership of the fasting activists, it brought them around into taking a decision of its choice and thus has succeeded in drawing them into its killing field. it is in this ground of their choosing and strength that the spirit and conscience of the movement will be defeated and destroyed in detail and interred in the dustbin of the country’s unflattering political history. it was in this moment and opportunity, which got created by the initial determination of a tall leader, social activist and a gandhian to boot, anna hazare, that there existed a window to enlarge the movement by sustaining its duration through the ploy of chain fasts by the team leadership and subsequently the people who would have been sucked into its soul, only because of the government’s reprehensible apathy for a public cause and concern. the tide of public opinion and the wave of media coverage would have made this movement into the uprisings, which the world had recently witnessed in the leadership change in egypt and libya. to upstage the government with its own strategy of ‘wearing out the movement’ would have been a befitting riposte, by prolonging the movement and bringing the government to negotiate and talk with the representatives of the team. this is where the gandhian in anna lost the plot, and at the first signs of firmness on the part of the government to cock a snook at the movement and its supporters, the team buckled under pressure and yielded the gains it had made ever since the movement was conceived and enacted.
the movement against corruption and the demand for a potent and worthy jan lok pal bill has taken a beating and it is unlikely that the chord which it had struck with the people or the 300 million middle class, who were identified with it, will regain the ground which it has now lost to the polity and the government. it is characteristic of indians to explain lack of determination and aggressiveness in their intent by making peace and harmony an alibi for inaction and just retribution. the haughty arrogance of the union law minister, to say that ‘even i am fasting as it is ramzan’ reflects very poorly on the mindset and attitude of the government and its ministers to lampoon the selflessness on the part of the fasting activists for a national and people’s cause. it is unlikely that, in the years to come there will be a social and public leader of the stature and capacity of anna hazare to selflessly steer the people and join with the government on matters of public interest and concerns. the momentum which had been built over the past nine days to bring the government to a deserving response of the movement’s demands, has been lost and surrendered most regretfully to the former’s ruse of empty posturing of not engaging with the activists. the political future of team anna is loaded with problems, which go beyond its capacity and organization: and the one chance which had emerged in the dark firmament of the country’s abhorable situation, which engulfs its polity and social environment has been gifted away to the scheming minds and condescending outlook of the people’s representatives.
when i had appealed to anna through my writing ‘save the nation’, it was essentially to pre-empt him from falling into a trap of giving substance to his earlier view, on making this into a political adventure. this will be a mistake which he will regret his lifetime and it will just be a matter of time when splinter groups from this team will be gobbled up by the larger regional and national political parties. the present political system which we have in our country has been derailed and subverted by the institutionalisation of corruption in public life, and therefore it will be extremely difficult nay improbable that, there will be any takers from among the team members who will venture into politics. anna and his team have no idea what it takes to win an election, at any level of contest. the congregations at jantar mantar and ramlila maidan on a single point agenda of fighting corruption and pushing the passage of the jan lok pal bill in the parliament, is hardly representative of political hustings held during the pre election campaigning. anna’s political party, if it does get formed will just be one more to the already existing pantheon of so many others, which only confuses the voter with its numerous symbols/signs. how i wish anna had taken a leaf from the freedom struggle and dwelt upon the doings of other patriots, who made the british government to hear the voice of the people, by causing an explosion in the then assembly hall. when a government becomes immune to the sufferings of the people and rejoices in its ability to control the political space in the people’s domain by its deviousness, and the inherent failings of our social realities, it implies supremacy premised on numbers rather than a moral acceptance. this, quite akin to the positional authority as against the personal authority, in a hierarchical system.
an opportunity to bring about the much desired revolution in the country, to free the people from the existing political system, has literally gone a begging. this chance is unlikely to come about again in the next 30 to 40 years, by when the country would have been fully consumed by the compulsions of coalition politics and corruption becomes our bedfellow. then also, we indians would require a fully accomplished gandhi or bhagat singh like leader to take us out from this quagmire of venality and perverseness. anna could bring us only this far.
