’83: Ranveer Singh starrer Kapil Dev film release date announced

Mumbai: After essaying chivalrous Maratha Peshwa in Bajirao Mastani in 2015 and Alauddin Khilji in upcoming Padmavati (December 1, 2017), Ranveer Singh is all set to play one of India’s finest former cricket captains - Kapil Dev - who brought the Cricket World Cup home in 1983 for the very first time.

The makers issued a press release to announce the release date of the film.

The film ’83 jointly produced by Reliance Entertainment and Phantom Films in association with Vibri Media and Kabir Khan Films will release on April 5, 2019. Directed by Kabir Khan, “the film follows how, under the captaincy of then newbie Kapil Dev, an ‘insignificant’ team became more than the sum of its parts and brought down the greatest cricketing giants, the ‘undefeatable’ West Indies. It is about that day, and all the events that lead to that moment of victory, tracking the coming of age of not just a cricketing team, but of a young nation in the eyes of the world.”

Talking about the venture, Kabir, best known for delivering blockbusters such as Ek Tha Tiger and Bajrangi Bhaijaan, said, “As a young schoolboy when I watched India win the 1983 Cricket World Cup I had no idea that from that day onwards Cricket in India will change forever. As a filmmaker, for me, the journey to that win, filled with raw energy and sheer passion of that young Indian team, is probably one of the most exciting stories I have worked on. And it’s great to have Ranveer come on board to play Kapil Dev, as honestly, I could see no one else for the role, ever since I started finalizing the script.”

Expressing ecstasy on being the chosen one for the film, Ranveer, soon after the film launch event tweeted, “I feel honoured & privileged to be part of this film. One of the greatest underdog stories of all time - finally coming 2 the silver screen. To have met our sporting heroes in the flesh & be regaled by their stories - full of nostalgia, humour, emotion. A truly unforgettable event. The greatest Indian sports story will now get its deserved cinematic glory! It's time to #Relive83 may God bless our endeavour. Im filled with a sense of responsibility to make a film the entire nation can be proud of. Thank u for this opportunity @kabirkhankk (sic)."
