PadMan: Will Akshay Kumar’s film make it to the Rs 100 crore club? Here’s the answer

Mumbai: Akshay Kumar starrer PadMan directed by R Balki of the Cheeni Kum and Paa fame may have garnered appreciation for its content and social message but the film is struggling at the Box Office.

Also starring Radhika Apte and Sonam Kapoor, PadMan, which hit theatres on February 9 has minted only over Rs 71 crores so far. And according to Trade Analyst Taran Adarsh, PadMan may not be able to mint substantial money in the next few days in order to touch the Rs 100 crore milestone.

He tweeted:

“#PadMan declined considerably in Weekend 2... Entry into the ₹ 100 cr Club is ruled out, as per current trending... [Week 2] Fri 2.10 cr, Sat 3.15 cr, Sun 3.78 cr. Total: ₹ 71.90 cr. India biz.(sic).”

#PadMan biz at a glance...

Week 1: ₹ 62.87 cr

Weekend 2: ₹ 9.03 cr

Total: ₹ 71.90 cr

India biz.(sic).”

PadMan is inspired by Tamil Nadu based social activist Arunachalam Muruganantham’s noble endeavour to invent low-cost sanitary pad making machines. The Padma Shri awardee has also been instrumental in spreading awareness about menstrual hygiene in rural India.

Akshay’s wife – Twinkle, who had written about Muruganantham in a story titled The Sanitary Man from the Sacred Land in her second book Legend of Lakshmi Prasad- has jointly produced the film with SPE Films India, KriArj Entertainment, Cape of Good Films and Hope Productions.

During an interview with BBC, Twinkle while talking about menstruation and the taboo attached to it worldwide said that it took her a lot of time to convince Arunachalam to give her his consent for making the film. It was only after repeated requests, the man, who keeps low key, agreed to give his nod.

PadMan was initially slated to release on January 25 but was postponed after the makers of Padmaavat approached Akshay Kumar requesting him to push his film.
