Tata Motors partners with Institution of Mechanical Engineers
New Delhi: Automobile major Tata Motors Friday said it entered into a partnership with UK-based Institution of Mechanical Engineers to develop professional registration for engineers in India.
"This association will also provide opportunities for engineers based in India, to achieve an internationally recognised standard of excellence," the company said in a statement.
Under the partnership, Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IME) will help to train and support Tata Motors' engineers, while the company will encourage its engineers to undertake programmes of continuous professional development.
IME will also support Tata Motors to ensure compliance with UK-SPEC for engineers working towards chartered, incorporated or technician status.
UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK- SPEC) describes requirements that have to be met to gain qualifications such as Engineering Technician (EngTech), Incorporated Engineer (IEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng).
Commenting on the partnership, Tata Motors Head - Advanced and Product Engineering, Tim Leverton said: "We are delighted that the professional development of Tata Motors Engineers can now be formally accredited under the worldwide recognised framework, offered by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers".
Tata Motors and the institution will also work together to build networks in industry and academia that can contribute to raising the standard of engineering across the sub-continent, he added.
Highlighting the timeliness of the partnership, IME Chief Executive Stephen Tetlow said: "India has become a global leader in manufacturing and an international engineering powerhouse".
The institution will conduct regular workshops and sessions for Tata Motors' engineers on Professional Registration, Academic Assessment, Assessment of Competence and Initial Professional Development (IPD) and Professional Review, the statement said.
