Volkswagen tops car quality survey

Sydney: German automobile manufacturing group Volkswagen has topped a quality survey, despite its cars having more problems than others.

According to the Total Quality Index by U.S.-based consultancy Strategic Vision, owners of VWs, Fords and Chrysler Group models are more satisfied with their ownership experience even though their cars are likely to have more problems than others, particularly Toyota, which had the lowest instance of any manufacturer for reported problems.

The findings, based on 45,390 new-car purchasers, were contradictory to results of JD Power Initial Quality Study, which placed Volkswagen on 22nd spot, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Strategic Vision president Alexander Edwards, however, pointed out that simply counting the number of problems isn't a good measure of a quality ownership experience.

“We point out Total Quality versus fewest problems for a reason. When measuring quality, the complete experience must be part of the calculation and include all the perceptions that influence how people make their decision,” Edwards said.

According to the report, in terms of specific category winners, VW's Golf took the win for best ‘small multi-function’ car, while the Eos won the convertible class and the Tiguan claimed the best ‘entry utility’ title.
