Best CNG car options for potential buyers

New Delhi: The dilemma between buying a compressed natural gas (CNG) car and a petrol or diesel car must have puzzled a lot of potential buyers. The anxiety surrounding safety of cars also perplexes the buyer since CNG is a highly flammable gas.

However, when it comes to fuel efficiency, CNG cars are the front runners. Many consumers even prefer bi-fuel option over diesel cars owing to lower initial and maintenance costs.

Keeping in view the running cost of the vehicle, the environmental benefits, many carmakers in India have launched a CNG version of their vehicle.

Let’s have a look at four car makers that offer CNG version of their popular seller in India.

Maruti Suzuki Private limited

Auto makers Maruti Suzuki can be termed as the leaders in CNG brigade. Currently the car maker sells six models in CNG version—Maruti Alto 800, Maruti Suzuki Eeco, Maruti Suzuki Zen, Maruti Suzuki Wagon R, Maruti Ertiga and Maruti Suzuki SX4. The lowest CNG car model starts at Rs 3.24 and goes up to Rs 7.92 lakh for the higher car model.

Tata Motors

Tata Motors is another prominent name when it comes to CNG cars. Tata last month launched Nano CNG emax in two variants at Rs 2.52 lakh followed by the latest Tata Indica emax series priced between Rs 3.99 lakh and Rs 4.26 lakh and the Tata Indigo emax priced between Rs 4.99 lakh and Rs 5.27 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).


Honda cars have introduced the CNG variant of its best selling sedan Honda City in the V(MT) trim level with a price tag of Rs 9.54 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) in 2012.

Hindustan Motors

Hindustan Motors sells the 3 models of its best selling Ambassador in a CNG version. Hindustan Motors Ambassador Grand 1800 HARIT CNG, Hindustan Motors Ambassador Grand 1800 HARIT CNG BU AC PS RSM and Hindustan Motors Ambassador Grand 1800 HARIT CNG BU AC PS RSM PW CL.
