Chennai: Daimler India Commercial Vehicle, subsidiary of German truck major Daimler AG, which makes 'Bharat Benz' brand of trucks, Thursday commenced its commercial production at its Rs 4,400-crore Oragadam plant near here.
To mark the occasion, a 25-tonne Bharat Benz truck -- 2,523 Heavy Duty Truck with 230 HP, based on the Mercedes Benz Axor platform, was formally rolled out from the assembly line by DICV Managing Director and CEO, Marc Llistosella.
The company had unveiled its Bharat Benz brand in the Indian market last year and Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had inaugurated its first manufacturing facility in April this year, it said in a statement.
"The production of Bharat Benz trucks were on schedule," it added.
With commencement of production, Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV) would offer trucks delivering best performance including reliability and fuel efficiency, it said.
"The fact that Thursday's launch of production sets another milestone only a few weeks after the plant opening reiterates that our project is well underway. It is a proud moment for us, again Thursday, to see the fructification of the team?s work over the last few years", Llistosella said.
The market launch of the first product would happen in September, 2012 and the company would be retailing it through 70 dealer locations in the first phase, it said.
