New Delhi:  Brijmohan Lal Munjal, the doyen of Indian two-wheeler industry, and the Chairman Emeritus of the Hero Group, passed away on Sunday, will be remembered not for only creating a Rs 10,000 crore group from scratch. Munjal will also be remembered for his visionary zeal that changed the rules of doing business in the Indian auto industry.

What started as a cycle making business at the age of 20, when Brijmohan Lall Munjal migrated from Pakistan to Amritsar, Munjal tapped the opportunity of government's open policy in the auto industry announced, and tied up with Honda of Japan to make motorcycles.

He not succeeded in the enterprise, even emerged as the world's largest motorcycle maker.

Munjal forged a robust dealer network and a loyal base of vendors, emulated by his peers and others across the automobile industry.

His inventory strategy helped in increasing efficiency and decreasing waste, as well as forecast demand. Munjal's evolved vendor efficiency and zero-inventory management practices at Hero, again emulated by others.

A big contribution of BM Munjal was in helping establish numerous medical, educational and infrastructure facilities.

Ludhiana Stock Exchange, the Ludhiana Aviation Club, Ludhiana Management Association and the Dayanand Medical College & Hospital, of which he was the Chairman Emeritus, after being its President for over three decades, are all the products of his vision.
