Failing to hold Rs 31,000 level, gold prices plunged by Rs 627 to Rs 30,538 per 10 grams in futures trade Tuesday as market participants trimmed their positions in tandem with a weakening trend overseas.

However, further depreciation in rupee against the dollar, which made imports costlier, limited the fall.

At the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), gold for delivery in October declined by Rs 627 to Rs 30,538 per ten grams.

Similarly, silver for delivery in September nosedived by Rs 1,645 to Rs 49,570 per kg.

Gold price in overseas markets, which normally set price trend on the domestic front, extended its yesterday's losses as rising US bond yields signalled the Fed could be moving closer to reducing its bond-buying programme next month.

Traders are now waiting for clues on the outlook for US stimulus from the minutes of the Federal Reserve's July policy meeting, due for release later in the day.
