The ‘bangle’ war between Anupam Kher and Taslima

Mumbai: Post realization of “the activist” within him after he lent support to Anna Hazare’s campaign, veteran actor Anupam Kher has been busy tweeting on India’s political state of affairs since then. However, his latest comment on Trinamool Congress MP and then Minister of State for Railways Mukul Roy, who made headlines for not visiting the site of the Kalka Mail accident, has peeved Bangladeshi writer and activist Taslima Nasreen. Kher wrote on his micro-blogging site, "When a minister refuses to visit an accident site where so many have died he should resign, wear bangles and sit at home." And Kher’s comment offended the lady in exile. In retaliation, she wrote, “The Big Fellow should be called nasty misogynist, unless he wears sari and bangles and feel proud of wearing these. Men think women`s clothing will castrate their phallic privileges, because maleness is associated with power and femaleness with submission." Apparently, the mention of bangles miffed Taslima, for she believes that Kher demeaned women. “His thinking is backward. Still consider women as abla (powerless). Shame on him. It`s not shameful for women to wear men`s clothes. Why should it be shameful for men to wear women`s clothes?" To which Kher wrote, “Friends please stop reacting to self-styled activists. We are brought up on Indian proverbs. You need to be an Indian to understand them. So let`s go for some Indian proverbs. For starters... Tu Kaun Mai KhamKhah."
