Gold prices dipped below Rs 26,000-level by falling Rs 363 to Rs 25,780 per ten grams in futures trade Friday as market players continued to trim their positions closely in tandem with a weakening global trend.

However, depreciation in rupee against US dollar capped the downside in first half of trade.

At the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), gold for delivery in August traded down by Rs 363 to Rs 25,780 per ten grams.

Similarly, silver for delivery in July declined by Rs 937 to Rs 39,547 per kg.

'Not wise to invest in gold at current level'

Gold price in overseas markets, dropped over 3 percent today, extending earlier losses as the dollar climbed after stronger-than-expected US jobs data, which could tempt the Federal Reserve to start scaling back its monetary stimulus later this year.

The US non-farm payrolls report showed employers added 195,000 new jobs to their payrolls last month, while the unemployment rate held steady at 7.6 percent as more people entered the workforce.

The jobs gain in June was better than the average monthly increase of 182,000 over the last year, and well above the analyst consensus estimate of 166,000 jobs.

Spot gold last traded down USD 39.30 or 3.14 percent at USD 1,214.20 an ounce, after moving in range of USD 1,207.50-1,246.60.

In Delhi spot market, gold prices fell by Rs 110 to Rs 26,720 per 10 grams, snapping their five-day long rally on sluggish demand at prevailing higher levels amid a weak global trend.

Silver also dropped by Rs 800 to Rs 40,600 per kg on reduced offtake by industrial units and coin makers.

Chennai

Standard gold prices fell by Rs 220 to Rs 26,245 per ten grams as against its previous close of Rs 26,465.

Similarly, silver prices moved down by Rs 825 to Rs 40,220 per kg from Rs 41,045 .

Delhi

In the national capital, gold of 99.9 and 99.5 percent purity fell by Rs 110 to Rs 26,720 and Rs 26,520 per 10 grams, respectively. The yellow metal had gained Rs 1180 in last five sessions. Sovereigns continued to be asked around previous level of Rs 24,000 per piece of eight grams in scattered deals.

In line with a general weak trend, silver ready dropped by Rs 800 to Rs 40,600 per kg and weekly-based delivery by Rs 1,265 to Rs 39,905 per kg. The white metal had gained Rs 150 yesterday.

Silver coins also plunged by Rs 2,000 to Rs 78,000 for buying and Rs 79,000 for selling of 100 pieces.

Mumbai

Standard gold of 99.5 percent purity dropped by Rs 80 to conclude at Rs 26,190 per 10 gm from Thursday's closing level of Rs 26,270.

Pure gold of 99.9 percent purity also dipped by a similar margin to end at Rs 26,330 per 10 gm from Rs 26,410.

Silver ready (.999 fineness) slumped by Rs 345 to close at Rs 41,525 per kg from Rs 41,870 previously.

Futures Trade (MCX)

At the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), gold for delivery in August traded down by Rs 363 to Rs 25,780 per ten grams.

Similarly, silver for delivery in July declined by Rs 937 to Rs 39,547 per kg.

International markets

Spot gold last traded down USD 39.30 or 3.14 percent at USD 1,214.20 an ounce, after moving in range of USD 1,207.50-1,246.60.

Gold ETF

SPDR Gold Trust, the world's largest gold exchange-traded fund, reported an outflow of 0.37 percent to 964.69 tonnes on Tuesday, its lowest since February 2009.
