Gold prices moved higher by Rs 112 to Rs 26,770 per ten grams in futures trade Friday as market players enlarged their positions amid a firming global trend.

At the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), gold for delivery in August traded up by Rs 112 at Rs 26,770 per ten grams.

However, silver for delivery in September slipped by Rs 13 to Rs 40,460 per kg.

'Not wise to invest in gold at current level'

Gold price in overseas markets, extended gains today after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke yesterday reiterated comments he made on Wednesday to the House Financial Services Committee.

He stressed that the timeline for winding down the Fed's stimulus program was not set in stone.

Spot gold last traded up USD 7.10 or 0.55 percent at USD 1,291.10 an ounce.

In New York, gold for August delivery climbed USD 6.70 or 0.5 percent to settle at USD 1,284.20 an ounce on the Comex division of the NYMEX yesterday after dropping USD 12.90 during Wednesday trade.

In Delhi spot market, both the precious metals, gold and silver gained on fresh buying by stockists amid a firm global trend.

While gold surged by Rs 275 to Rs 27,300 per ten grams, silver gained Rs 295 to Rs 40,730 per kg on increased offtake by jewellers and industrial units.

Chennai

Standard gold prices moved higher by Rs 150 to Rs 26,905 per ten grams as against its previous close of Rs 26,755.

However, silver prices dropped by Rs 95 to Rs 40,145 per kg from Rs 40,240.

Delhi

In the national capital, gold of 99.9 and 99.5 percent purity zoomed up by Rs 275 each to Rs 27,300 and Rs 27,100 per ten grams, respectively.

Sovereign followed suit and went up by Rs 50 to Rs 24,250 per piece of eight gram.

In line with a general firm trend, silver ready rose by Rs 295 to Rs 40,730 per kg and weekly-based delivery by Rs 355 to Rs 40,590 per kg, respectively.

However, silver coins continued to be asked around previous level of Rs 79,000 for buying and Rs 80,000 for selling of 100 pieces.

Mumbai

Standard gold of 99.5 percent purity declined by Rs 35 to finish at Rs 26,650 per 10 gm from Wednesday's closing level of Rs 26,685.

Pure gold of 99.9 percent purity also moved down by a similar margin to end at Rs 26,790 per 10 gm from Rs 26,825.

Silver ready (.999 fineness) dropped by Rs 530 to conclude at Rs 40,990 per kg as against Rs 41,520 yesterday.

Futures Trade (MCX)

At the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), gold for delivery in August traded up by Rs 112 at Rs 26,770 per ten grams.

However, silver for delivery in September slipped by Rs 13 to Rs 40,460 per kg.

International markets

Gold ETF

SPDR Gold Trust GLD, the world's largest gold-backed exchange-traded fund, said its holdings fell 0.10 percent to 935.17 tonnes on Thursday from 936.07 tonnes on Wednesday.
