Gold prices failed to hold Rs 33,000 level by slipping Rs 45 to Rs 32,989 per ten grams in futures trade Saturday as market participants trimmed their positions in tandem with a weakening trend overseas.

Sharp appreciation in rupee against dollar also weighed on bullion prices as it makes imports cheaper. The rupee settled at the day's high of 65.70, a rise of 85 paise or 1.28 percent.

At the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), gold for delivery in October fell by Rs 45 to end the week at Rs 32,898 per ten grams compared to Rs 33,034 in previous session. The yellow metal had hit an intra-day high of Rs 35,074 on Wednesday.

Similarly, silver for delivery in September dropped by Rs 652 to Rs 53,212 per kg.

Gold price in overseas markets, which normally set price trend on the domestic front, fell below USD 1,400 per ounce today as the dollar rallied to a four-week high, with investors squaring positions at the end of the month and cashing in on a recent run-up ahead of a long US holiday weekend.

Spot gold last traded down USD 10.70 or 0.76 percent at USD 1,394.51 an ounce after slipping to a session low of USD 1,392.06. an ounce.

In New York, gold for December delivery fell by USD 16.80 or 1.2 percent to settle at USD 1,396.10 an ounce on the Comex division of the NYMEX. However, the metal posted a more than 6 percent gain for the month.

Meanwhile, gold prices declined further by Rs 275 to Rs 31,425 per ten gram, extending losses for the third straight day in Delhi bullion market Saturday on fall in demand at higher levels amid weak global trend.

While gold fell by Rs 275 to Rs 31,425 per ten grams after losing Rs 2,200 in the last two sessions, silver shed another Rs 70 at Rs 53,930 per kg after losing Rs 4,500 in last two days.

Mumbai

Standard gold of 99.5 percent purity rose by Rs 430 to finish at Rs 31,950 per 10 gm from Friday's closing level of Rs 31,520. Pure gold of 99.9 percent purity soared by Rs 440 to to conclude at Rs 32,120 from Rs 31,680.

Silver ready (.999 fineness) moved up by Rs 85 to end at Rs 55,110 per kg as compared to Rs 55,025 yesterday.

Delhi

Gold of 99.9 and 99.5 percent purity fell by Rs 275 each to Rs 31,425 and Rs 31,225 per ten grams, respectively, while sovereign continued to be asked at last level of Rs 25,300 per piece of eight gram.

Silver ready slide by Rs 70 to Rs 53,930 per kg and weekly-based delivery by Rs 570 to Rs 53,430 per kg respectively.

Silver coins remained stable at Rs 89,000 for buying and Rs 90,000 for selling of 100 pieces.

Futures Trade (MCX)
