Review: ‘Singham’ roars like a lion!

Mention cops in Bollywood and one film that time and again comes to mind is Amitabh Bachchan starrer ‘Zanjeer,’ a cult, film noir in Bollywood style, which gave birth to the famous moniker - Angry Young Man. If ‘Zanjeer,’ and of late ‘Dabangg’ is your yardstick, then Rohit Shetty’s ‘Singham’ comes out with flying colours, especially for a man who has been dabbling in laugh riots (read ‘Golmaal’ series), making an out-an-out action flick can be a huge challenge. Starring stalwarts like Ajay Devgn, Prakash Raj and Kajal Agarwal, Shetty’s ‘Singham’ is not an ordinary cop story. A remake of 2010 Tamil hit, ‘Singham’ is not only loud but also visceral. It has electrifying star cast and some high octane action stunts that leave you agog till the end of the film. It is the battle between good and bad, where Bajirao Singham (Ajay Devgn) is pitted against Jaikant Shirke (Prakash Raj) – an extortionist who embodies the evil nexus of crime and politics. When an honest cop shoots himself for being falsely implicated in a case of corruption and his widow accuses Jaikant Shirke, the latter goes unscathed because of his political clout. Somewhere far across in Maharasthra-Goa border, Bajirao Singham is a no-nonsense cop and a one-man army. A venerated figure for the poor, downtrodden and innocent souls, Singham is the fate of criminals. When transferred to the city, Singham becomes the bane for wrongdoers as he beats the baddies to pulp. And yes, our cop has a six-pack too! ‘Singham’ is a masala pot-boiler which draws applause and whistles. The film has raw energy which makes it instantly likeable, thereby beguiling you with its own unique charm. Watch out for the exhilarating performance of Ajay Devgn and Prakash Raj.
