Blackberry Bold 9700
RIM’s latest smart phone Blackberry Bold 9700 does not disappoint the geeks. Though it lacks the sportiness and gadget-freak appeal of the iPhone or Palm Pre, the message from RIM is clear – sophistication.
An ultimate utilitarian phone, it is one of the best in the Blackberry stable. It surprises you with its nuances and attention to details.
The Bold is sleeker in its design compared to 9650 and 9000, with 4.29 inches height, 2.36 inches and 0.56 inches depth. The phone weighs 4.3 ounces (122 grams).
The design incorporates a 3.5mm headphone jack, a microUSB port/power connector, and a customizable shortcut key. The leather wrapped back and the generous dose of chrome on its sides gives it a definitive classy feel.
The 2.44-inch display with half –VGA 480x360 pixel colour display, with transmissive TFT LCD display, user selectable font size and backlighting provides for a crisp display and looks.
The voice quality which is comparable to that of a landline, Bluetooth 2.1, Wi-Fi and 3G and a 624 MHz processor will enable it to multitask without any lag. This make it an ideal business phone.
RIM, in its quest to attract general consumers and business professionals, has loaded the phone with a 3.2 mega pixel camera. Though the phone includes a onboard of memory of only 256MB and but comes with a 2GB of microSD media card in its memory slot, which can be expanded up to a whooping 32GB.
The optical track pad navigator helps one to sort through a long list of contancts or file. The trackball is quite responsive. The 32-button QWERTY key-pad is excellent and gives springy and assuring recoil when pressed. But RIM has compromised on the display and keypad size for the sleeker design compared to the Bold’s predecessors.
Despite the compact size, the phone has a battery life of 1500mAHR and 21 days of standby and a music playtime of upto 38 hours.
The verdict: Best in its class but with a price tag of Rs 30,000 it scares away general consumers.
