New Delhi: Aiming to undercut the market of Google’s Nexus and Amazon’s Kindle Fire, Apple is planning to come up with a smaller and cheaper iPad by year end.

Reportedly, the new model will have a screen that is 7 to 8 inches diagonally, less than the current 9.7-inch version.

The new device is likely to be priced at par with Google’s Nexus 7and Amazon’s Kindle Fire, which is USD 199.

The latest iPad ranges in price from USD 499 to USD 829.

Apple iPad went on sale in April 2010 and ever since have dominated the tablet market. According to research firm Gartner, Apple has a market share of 61 percent.

Apple's market rivals like Samsung, Google, Microsoft and Amazon are eager to gain a toehold. Google launched its ambitious Nexus 7 on June 27 while earlier in the month, Microsoft announced a tablet called Surface. Amazon's Kindle Fire was released last year.
