Paul McCartney’s letter to ‘fifth Beatle’ to go under the hammer

London: Paul McCartney’s offer letter to an anonymous drummer, who offered him an opportunity to join The Beatles, has been discovered and is all set to be auctioned.

It could indeed have been the job opportunity of a lifetime for the drummer had he accepted the invitation, dated August 12, 1960, from Sir Paul McCartney to audition for the The Beatles, just before the band’s tour to Hamburg. The letter was hand-written by McCartney when he was just 18, in response to an anonymous drummer advertising his services in Liverpool Echo on August 8, 1960, that simply read ‘Drummer – Young – Free’, the Daily Mail reported. Sadly, however, it seems that the “fifth Beatle” missed his chance. Quite surprisingly, the letter was found earlier this year at a car boot sale in Liverpool folded inside a book. The Beatles historians are certainly excited with the find, as it is one of the earliest occasions that the band referred to themselves as The Beatles. The letter, from an anonymous seller, is being auctioned at Christie’s South Kensington office on November 15 and is expected to fetch around 9,000 pounds. ANI
