Nintendo's Wii U debuts in Japan
Zeebiz Bureau

Tokyo: Nintendo’s Wii U home videogame console has made its debut in Japan, as the company aims reposition itself while hundreds made a beeline to get hold of the new console.

The device is already sold out in many US stores and probably will be in short supply by the weekend, some analysts fear.

Wii U, equipped with a touch-screen controller called the Wii U GamePad, enables players to play games on a television display or on the GamePad screen.

The Wii U is probably Nintendo's biggest bet in the last 20 years as a company and keeping the sales momentum going after the holiday shopping season could be a challenge.

In addition to the basic 8 gigabyte model costing $299.99, Nintendo is selling a "deluxe" 32 GB version for $349.99 in the United States and 31,500 yen in Japan. The "deluxe" package will include its new Nintendo land game.
