Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 Vs Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos: A comparison
The South Korean company has announced a successor to the Grand Duos, Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 that promises to be better in every way than its predecessor.
Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 has been officially unveiled in India and is likely to hit the stores in January 2014 much to the delight of the fans. It is even available online for pre-order at Rs 999 only.
After the success of its Galaxy Grand Duos, one of the pioneers in 5-inch screen, Samsung followed it with the Samsung Galaxy Grand Quattro which was not much of a success.
However, with the Galaxy Grand 2, there is no denying the fact that Samsung is back with a bang and is set to rule the market again as the new smartphone promises to be faster, bigger and better in every which way.
Announced in November 2013, Galaxy Grand 2 has drawn many comparison with its predecessor Galaxy Grand Duos.
Here is brief comparison of Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 and Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos in regards to their specifications.
With a 5.2-inch screen display, the Grand 2 is just slightly bigger that the Grand Duos whose screen measures 5 inches. There isn’t much difference there and it wouldn’t really matter. Moreover, both boast of a TFT capacitive touchscreen with 16 million colours each. However, with a 720 x 1280 pixels resolution and pixel density of 280 pixels per inch (ppi), the Grand 2 definitely is way above the 480 x 800 pixels resolution with 187 ppi pixel density of the Grand Duos – simply meaning better display, colours and pictures.
BODY AND WEIGHT:
With a body dimension of 146.8 x 75.3 x 8.9 mm (5.78 x 2.96 x 0.35 in), the Grand 2 is slightly bigger than the Grand Duos which measures 143.5 x 76.9 x 9.6 mm (5.65 x 3.03 x 0.38 in). Moreover, the Grand 2 weights a gram more at 163 g (5.75 oz) than the Grand Duos which weights 162 g (5.71 oz).
Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos runs on Android 4.1.2 (Jelly Bean) operating system and is supported by a dual-core 1.2 GHz Cortex-A9. This is upgradable to Jelly Bean 4.2. But surprisingly, considering that Jelly Bean 4.4 or the so-called ‘KitKat’ is now available in the market, one fails to understand why Samsung did not use it in the new Grand 2 which runs on Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean)? Is it upgradable to Android 4.4 ‘KitKat’? No news so far. Still faster though. However, the CPU which runs on Quad-core 1.2 GHz should make the Grand 2 a better option in this section too.
Both the smartphones have an 8 MP primary camera with 3264 x 2448 pixels, auto focus and an LED flash. No winner or loser here. And while it may not really make much of a difference, Grand Duos has a 2 MP front camera while the Grand 2 has a 1.9 MP front camera. Well! 0.1 MP shouldn’t really be a problem here. Moreover, they both record videos with 1080p@30fps accompanied by stereo sound recording.
The Grand Duos boasted of 8GB internal memory and 1GB RAM. It’s practically the same with the Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 — 8GB internal memory and a 1.5GB RAM, a slight improvement with RAM. However, both the Samsung smartphones support microSD card through which the internal memory can be expanded to 64GB.
Both the smartphones, Grand Duos and the Grand 2 support dual SIM. Moreover, they both support 2G and 3G connections.
An interesting feature with all smartphones — the life expectancy of the battery life once fully charged.
The Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos runs on Li-Ion 2100 mAh battery which the company claims gives 10 hours of talktime on 2G and over 400 hours of standby. On the other hand, the Grand 2 runs on a stronger and more powerful battery, Li-Ion 2600 mAh, which should definitely give longer talktime and standby. As per reports, Grand 2 gives a talktime of 17 hours on full charge and over 450 hours of standby, both on 2G.
Both are almost the same in this category. They both support GPRS, EDGE, Bluetooth, WLAN and USB. However, while the speed of Grand Duos is HSDPA, 21 Mbps; HSUPA, 5.76 Mbps, not much is revealed of Grand 2.
Pricing is always a tricky issue in the world of smartphone market as it can make or break a phone. However, Samsung has never failed in the area.
Making it tough for its opponents, the South Korean company has competitively priced the Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 between Rs 22990 to Rs 24990.
That's one hell of a price considering the Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos was priced around Rs 21,000 on its launch earlier this year. It is now available online for Rs 17,000 to Rs 19,500.
While the Galaxy Grand Duos was available mainly in white colour, the Galaxy Grand 2 device will be available in black, pink and white colour variants. Now, that is fancy!
