Samsung loses battle with Apple in UK High Court patent case
London: American giant Apple has defeated Samsung in a patent battle at the High Court in UK after a judge declared three technology patents claimed by the Korean company as invalid. Samsung had sued Apple over patents related to the 3G mobile broadband standard, the Telegraph reports.

According to the judge, the three patents were invalid because they were the same as earlier patents or have technologies which were too obvious to ensure legality. The three patents were all deemed as standards-essential and Samsung was obliged to licence them to rivals on a fair and a reasonable basis.

Disappointed at the decision, Samsung issued a statement that they will decide upon filing an appeal after a thorough review of the judgment. Samsung's defeat is the latest result in a global barrage of claims and counterclaims between the two companies, which between them account for one in every two smartphones sold worldwide.

Last time Samsung and Apple clashed at the High Court, Apple had unsuccessfully claimed that Samsung had unlawfully copied the designs of the iPhone and iPad in its Galaxy range, and was ordered to take out newspaper advertisements admitting it had not been ripped off, the report added.
