Microsoft is setting the stage to release its tablet the ‘Surface’ running Microsoft’s latest OS offering — the Windows 8.

Surface will have two versions: Surface RT, powered by an ARM chip running on Windows RT, another version of the new OS, and an Intel-based version called Surface Pro.

Microsoft is planning a midnight launch for the Surface on October 25, as the firm seeks to build momentum ahead of its debut in the tablet market.

Screen Sizes

Both RT and Pro will have HD display capabilities Gorilla Glass with the RT sporting a 10.6-inch ClearType HD display (1280 x 720) and the Pro a 10.6-inch ClearType Full HD (1920 x 1080) display with a 16:9 widescreen.

The screens on the Surface account for the biggest in the tablet PC market. With major players like Apple, Samsung dealing in 10-inch category, the Surface comes in as a refreshed choice for customers who wish to go for something more than iOS and Android.

Cameras

Like other tablets running hot in the market, the Surface will also feature both front and back cameras. The front-facing camera is termed by Microsoft as Life Cam.

With Microsoft-owned Skype, video chats will add to the viewing experience of Surface. The rear camera is capable of video capture and taking images.

Touch Keyboards

Add touch keyboards to the tablet and the device turns into a small notebook.

The Surface has multiple Touch Covers to choose from. There are about five different Touch Covers to choose from. Unlike regular keyboards, Touch Covers support an intuitive touch interface which gives an excellent tactile typing experience.

The Touch Cover, which is amazingly 3mm, can be connected to the Surface tablet with a magnetic click, enabling easy texting and mailing.

Built-in Kickstand

Surface comes with a built-in kickstand. Be it portrait or landscape modes, the Surface can achieve just that with the integrated kickstand. Watching movies or going through photos will be a different experience as the tablet needs only to be propped up by the kickstand.

Memory

With the Surface tablet, running out of space might not be a problem. Microsoft has given Surface many storage options from 32GB, 64GB and 128GB. If that much space doesn’t suffice, the company has also given memory expansion options owing to the inclusion of a microSD card slot. Now you can add space to the Surface with a memory stick, keeping your extra data on an external medium.

Price

CEO Steve Ballmer recently suggested that the Surface would figure in the USD 300 to USD 800 bracket quashing claims that the device will start selling at USD 199. Even still, Microsoft refuses to comment on the speculative pricing of its devices though earlier in the year Microsoft claimed the tablet would cost a "competitive" amount.

I`m expecting this to be expensive as it will be the best bit of mobile tech on the market and it will be worth it I don`t think MS are being cagey Is that what people think of apple when they hold out on price announcements until their product launch? No, and I`m not counting ms surface supposed product launch earlier in the year, I`d call that more of a preview If it`s not expensive, then that will be a bonus and probably the result of some clever thinking from within the company Either way, Windows 8 will be a massive success as will the surface, catalyzed by their very own combination How refreshing to see form meeting function for a change and I`d say it`s finally time to drop some hard earned on a worthy unit!-ark -
Three weeks till launch and still no announcement of price? MS being cagey about the price perhaps suggests it`s going to be expensive-Gary -
No-one outside of Microsoft actually knows the screen resolutions of the Surface tablets, as they haven`t been officially announced However, anyone who has folllwed the development of Windows 8 knows that your figures on the RT tablet are wrong In order to support the metro snap functionality you need a screen resolution of 1366x768 as a minimum Do you actually think Microsoft will release a product with a resolution lower than this? No chance! Surface is a reference design if nothing else There`s no way the res will be 1280x720 There`s no chance they`d be so stupid as to cripple their own product like that-Dan -London
