Worldwide mobile sales fall for first time since 2009: Report
London: Sales of mobiles phones have fallen for the first time since 2009 as consumers opt for expensive smartphones rather than cheaper handsets, a report has said.

According to the research firm Gartner, overall in 2012, 1.75 billion mobile phones were sold, down 1.7 percent from 2011.

Samsung and Apple continued to dominate the market, with the Korean giant selling 385 million phones in 2012, of which 53.5 percent were smartphones.

According to the report, Apple sold 130 million smartphones in the same period.

Chinese company Huawei was third spot in worldwide smartphone sales for the first time in the fourth quarter, Gartner said, selling 27.2 million smartphones in 2012, an increase of 74 percent, the Telegraph reports.

Gartner principal analyst Anshul Gupta said that the last time the worldwide mobile phone market declined was in 2009.

He pointed out that tough economic conditions, shifting consumer preferences and intense market competition weakened the worldwide mobile phone market this year.
