Madhur’s ‘Jail’ a rip off of Brazilian flick ‘Carandiru’?

One of India’s greatest filmmakers, Madhur Bhadarkar, is under fire yet again for ripping off a Brazilian flick and basing his forthcoming offering ‘Jail’ on the same.

Mumbai: One of India’s greatest filmmakers, Madhur Bhadarkar, is under fire yet again. But this time, it isn’t for choosing a controversial subject for his film, rather for ripping off a Brazilian flick and basing his forthcoming offering ‘Jail’ on the same. According to reports, ‘Jail’ is a rip off of the 2003 Brazilian hit flick ‘Carandiru’, based on the real-life experiences of a doctor inside the dreadful state penitentiary ‘Carandiru’ in Sao Paulo, Brazil, during his social work towards Aids prevention. A source reveals, "Jail is said to be a realist take on the situation in the high security prison system of India. Neil Nitin Mukesh plays an innocent guy in the prison for a crime he never commits. What’s surprising here is the whole idea of Madhur Bhandarkar indulging into replicating antics, for he is known to derive inspiration from nothing but real life. Whether it was the unraveling of the glitzy social world in ‘Page 3’, showing the plight of dance bar girls in ‘Chandni Bar’ or the realities of dark and dingy world of fashion in ‘Fashion’, Bhandarkar has only offered us with pure real cinema, hence such a speculation might disappoint a lot of his fans and critics. This plagiarism charge hasn’t gone too well with Madhur and the director has refuted the claims. “Mine is an original film. All my films right from ‘Chandni Bar’ to ‘Fashion’ have been the fact realities and fiction. ‘Jail’ is an original script. You can watch ‘Jail’ and the Brazilian film and will find out that there is no connection”, says a disturbed Madhur. Well, we can only hope that there is no truth attached to the news.
