London: Dalai Lama, the Tibetan spiritual leader has become the world`s most senior religious leader to join Twitter after the Pope and others. The Dalai Lama started Tweeting after he met up with the social networking site founder Evan Williams in Los Angeles where he is travelling as a part of his extended US tour and meeting with the President Barack Obama, `The Telegraph` reported.
Just two weeks after joining the site, the Tibetan spiritual leader has already attracted 140,000 followers. Though there are no pearls of wisdom so far from his holiness, Telegraph said Dalai Lama is using his Twitter account to inform the people of his activities and travels and has shied away from making any strong political statements. The Buddhist Monk, who advocates greater autonomy for Tibet under Chinese rule is seen by Beijing as a separatist bent on independence for his Himalayan homeland. The Dalai Lama is the latest religious leader to embrace the technological advancements in the networking world. Pope Benedict XVI frequently updates followers with video messages on YouTube and also has a Facebook account. The Church of England has a Twitter account, weekly podcasts and a group on Facebook. The creation of Twitter account by Dalai Lama comes a year after Twitter suspended an account set up by an imposter. After this incident Twitter started a system of "verified accounts" for public figures and His Holiness has one. PTI
