Videocon hopeful on Bengal project
Kolkata: The Videocon group is hopeful about the Rs 20,000 crore power and steel project at Jamuria in Burdwan district in West Bengal and work could begin as early as the end of this fiscal.

"I will be meeting (Chief Minister) Mamata (Banerjee) today as she has invited me to review various projects. Coal linkage has been a worry for the project, but she has written to the Centre. But things take time at the Centre as you know," Videocon Group chairman Venugopal Dhoot said here.

The company had signed a memorandum of understanding with the former Left Front government for setting up a three million-tonne integrated steel plant and a 1,200-MW power plant in October 2007.

While there were issues related to coal linkage, Coal India Ltd, the state-run coal miner, has also raised objections stating that the project area in Jamuria had coal reserves.

Speaking on the sidelines of the AGM of the Calcutta Chambers and Commerce, Dhoot said that another 400 acre was required for the project.

"We have got 600 acre, but we will need another 300-400 acre land. That should not be a problem," he added.

Earlier, there was speculation about the company scrapping the project.
