New Delhi: Famous lyricist Javed Akhtar spoke to Zeenews today in the wake of rising rape cases in the country and even offered his suggestions to curb the crime against women. Speaking to the channel, Mr. Akhtar said, “The country is in dire need of complete police security and since women are considered inferior to men, therefore, even the mindset of the countrymen needs to be changed.” Even post the shocking Delhi gang rape incident that took the life of an innocent 23-year-old paramedical student, there were reports of rapes being committed across the nation. Javed Akhtar strongly put his views forward in this regard: “The laws and regulations must be very strict to deal with this issue. Even the society at large must understand its responsibility towards women. Respect and security for women should also be there.” The statistics reveal that 95% rapists are known to the women be it there family member, relatives, friends etcetera. In order to stop domestic violence, Akhtar voiced his opinion on the matter and said, “We must understand that first and foremost it is not rape rather it is non-violence. We must begin the fight at the ground level. If the government and the police would have understood their responsibilities, the horrific crime would have never been committed. In today’s date, even if a woman wants to go and lodge an FIR, she has to deal with the narrow mindset of the police. Therefore, the police must be sensitised in this regard and must be educated to handle such cases.”
