New Delhi: State-owned miner NMDC Tuesday said it has awarded a Rs 1,978 crore contract to Bhilai Engineering Corporation (BEC) for the entire coke oven package meant for its upcoming 3-MTPA steel plant in Chhattisgarh.

"The coke oven plant will be executed within the overall time frame of 33 months," NMDC said in a statement.

Coke ovens convert coking coal into coke. A battery of such ovens are normally attached with a by-product plant where invaluable constituents are recovered from the gaseous content of coal driven out during carbonisation.

NMDC has already awarded a number of contracts for the project, including a Rs 760 crore order to a consortium of four firms, including Siemens VAI, for turnkey execution of a sinter plant complex.

The company expects the plant to be operational by 2014.

Over three years ago, the then steel minister Ram Vilas Paswan had laid the foundation stone for the steel plant.

Initially, the cost of the project was estimated at Rs 14,000 crore.
