Bhubaneswar: Optimistic about launch of the much-delayed Posco steel project in Odisha's Jagatsingpur district, South Korean Ambassador Joon-Gyu Lee Wednesday said the state government should give further momentum to it.

"I hope the Posco project will be launched this year...I am very hopeful it will come up in the very early part of this year," Gyu told reporters after meeting Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik here.

The ambassador said, "I also requested him (CM) to further expedite it. I had a very good discussion with the Chief Minister."

If the Posco project was realised it would boost the economy of Odisha and improve industrial culture, he said.

To a question, Gyu said, "Of course the project is delayed because the MoU was signed in 2005."

Regarding a fresh document which needs to be entered into, he said provisions of the lapsed MoU should be revised, if necessary.

Stating that he wished to bring Korea's first woman president to Odisha who is to visit India for the 40th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between the two countries, the envoy said, "If possible, I will like to see our president and your chief minister launch this mega project."

Asked whether he visited the project site, he said "I have been to Paradip and saw the site from a distance. It is very beautiful."

The chief minister said the state government was pursuing peaceful industrialisation, but was silent on the death of three anti-Posco protestors last Saturday while allegedly making bombs.
