New Delhi: Tata Steel has been chosen by the Japanese Union of Scientists and Engineers (JUSE) for an award in total quality management which is considered as the highest honour in this genre.

"Tata Steel has created history by becoming the first integrated steel company in the world to be awarded the coveted Deming Grand Prize," it said in a statement Tuesday.

DGP is awarded to a firm for demonstrating excellence in total quality management (TQM) in the areas of production, customer service, HR, corporate social responsibility and environment among others.

"Looking into the future when Tata Steel sets out to realise more challenging targets in an increasingly uncertain environment with multiple and new stakeholders, I am confident that the TQM journey will help us in sustaining the positive energy in the entire organisation enabling the achievement of customer focused business goals," company Managing Director H M Nerurkar said.

Since instituted in 1969, 22 companies have won the DGP worldwide, of which three are Indian firms.

Deming Prize Committee instituted by JUSE, the apex body spearheading the quality movement, notified the award today and the formal award ceremony will take place on November 14, 2012 in Tokyo.
