Direct cash transfer scheme is a process to change administrative structure: Manish Tewari
New Delhi: Rubbishing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s allegations that the government is trying to bribe voters ahead of the 2014 general elections with the direct cash transfer scheme, Minister of Information and Broadcasting Manish Tewari on Wednesday said the scheme is meant to bring an affirmative change in the existing administrative process for the welfare of the people.

Terming the government’s step a ‘process of reengineering’ Tewari said that the decision should not be seen as an election stunt.

“This is the process of reengineering, a step toward changing the administrative structure of the country. If someone will look behind after 10-15 years, he or she will say proudly that there was a government, which took the step to fetch the money directly in his or her pockets,” said Tewari.

“This is not an election stunt. I request the BJP to look at the matter in a broader prospect because these reforms are meant to bring change in the existing picture of the country,” he added.

The United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government on Tuesday furnished the outline of its ambitious direct cash transfer scheme, with Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram terming it as a big political game changer.

The scheme would be launched in 51 districts involving 16 states in its first phase, and present operational 42 schemes of the government, including those from the Health Ministry, would be part of the scheme.

According to the government almost Rs 3,20,000 crore cash transfer scheme will be launched in stages and cover the entire country by the end of 2013.

Families with Aadhar card, entitled to subsidies, pension, scholarships etc, will get money directly in their bank accounts. For this, they need to give their Aadhar card number to service provider like gas agencies and banks.
